Well get to that in just a minute. Lets start with the good totals we picked up today in the south bay. Impressive numbers to tell you about, just under one inch of rain in sarah tea go and here in campbell 2 10ths and that is a good total for a 24hour period. I want to take you live to tahoe, show you the snow flakes coming down now. This is live from squall valley and the mountains hold the key. You may not be aware but snow pack supplies 1 3rd of the total supply for california. The snow pack replenishes in the summer months when we dont get that much rain and its critical to the drought. Were at 36 of normal snow pack for this time of year. That number could jump as high as 40 when we get the april 1st snow survey. Here is the deal. Tomorrows survey is incredibly significant because typically snow accumulates up until prim april 1st and melts thereafter. Were still dun down 60 but every little bit counts and this late series of storms has actually made a pretty good difference. So still, going to be a long time before we get out of the drought and nobody knows that better than you. Thats right. You brought up an excellent point. Totals adding up. Chain controls up but you may notice around the bay area, sunny breaks, too, but dont let your guard down. More thundershowers and hail is possible into the overnight hours. Going from rain at times to scattered showers tonight and even the opportunity for some overnight thunder in the bay area setting up for an active tuesday of weather. Reporter a bad day for redwood trees because here in berkeley, what is left across the street from me used to be an 80foot redwood tree. Branchs on the roof below. The house uninhabitable. Where did the rest of the tree go . Take a look. This was a big tree. When lightning came in about 1 20 this afternoon, pieces big and small went all over the neighborhood. Some of it went through roofs. Some came down on vans. Went through windows, through the sides of houses. A hole on the side of a house, the size of a bowling ball where wood slammed through and it flew a block in each direction. A woman that lives two houses away heard the blast and said it sounded like an ieu. She wasnt sure what happened. I saw wood scattered everywhere so i thought the roof exploded. So i looked over at the tree that used to be 80 feet tall and its only 20 feet tall now and i realized that the tree had been hit by lightening and had exploded. Reporter take a look at a before and after. We got a google photo to show you how tall the tree was and what it looks like now. About 55, 60 feet of tree gone. Four houses are without power out here. A number of houses were hit by flying wood but the good news here, just like over where another redwood tree was hit, no people were injured. Live in berkeley, Terry Mcsweeney. Were seeing downpours leaving san jose, just ten minutes ago coming down good but the sun has broken out and sunny skies towards the peninsula. Good news for the oakland as opener. A good chance of rain. Look at the temperatures outside. 40s and 50s. So it is quite chilly as you step outside. Right now 49 in san jose. If you cam pair that to 24 hours ago, were running much cooler, no doubt we had a strong cold front come through today and now the cooler air a lot moving through dropping the snow levels over the next 24 hours. This is the last six hours. You can see the lightning strikes in the north bay towards the east bay, most action around mid afternoon and earlier today. I think well see the same play out during the day tomorrow as you see whats left of the band of showers heading into morgan hill in the next ten minutes or so. Downtown clearing and seeing showers there around the grade towards please season ton as this next band moves out, catching a break. Here is the gap between the showers. Offshore, cold unstable air and more showers and embedded thundershowers that will roll through as we approach midnight tonight and during the day tomorrow. This is an active pattern that will continue for 24 hours. Hour by hour, notice the breakup of the showers until about 11 00, may see another band pass on through. Scattered showers and isolated downpours for your commute much like this afternoon and as the heating of the day increases the stability from 3 00 to 6 00 could see intense thundershowers in parts of the bay area and snow levels dropping, as low as 35 00 feet, not just for the sierra but Mount Hamilton and higher peaks could get a dusting tomorrow. Well let you know how much more rain to expect and sierra snow is in the forecast. Back to you. Thanks, rob. See you shortly. The new prediction pushing the threat of Climate Change to a new height. Congratulations. The vip treatment continues tomorrow with breakfast at joe bidens home then biden tells the roseys he has more plans for them but those plans are still a surprise right now. The real action now is transitioning into the foothills there south of downtown towards morgan hill. You can see the break that were seeing behind the cold front and now still some scattered showers offshore that hint at tomorrows forecast. Which will be more unsettled weather and a chance for thunder. Tonight, big news in oakland. Opening night for the as. Were looking over here towards the peninsula and the roads are drying out in some parts. Rob talked about the rain having tailed off and hitting the southern portion of san jose. This is 101. The rain just traveled through. Look at the water kicking up. Even though there is light traffic, the water causing an issue and on the windshield. They have the headlights on because if you have windshield wipers going, you have to keep them on. Thats the law, folks. As we look at the map, a little slowing through san jose. As you come into san jose, the big slow down and thats a typical flow of traffic, all starting to recover after a good slow down. South 85 considering slowing but all over the green is wet roadways and the blue there is puddling and ponding likely on the roadways and thats an issue with the storm coming through the southern portion of the bay area. Northbound, still lag slowing down as you pass by and heading up toward union city and newark not such an issue. Pretty much all the bay looking light. Green all over shows you it is wed around. We have a slowing drive southbound 8 0 because of the crash blocking one of your lanes right there at the coliseum approaching 66. Send it back to you. Thank you, mike. They are a quarter. Guess where else they are signing up for sure . At e health, 45 of the customers are in the 18 to 34 age range which is almost double what they are getting on exchanges. Reporter nate is Communications Director for the nongovernment Exchange Platform and where the young people are enrolling or through e health, it benefits the longterm viability of obamacare. Its great to have different channels of enrollment. You want as many people in the risk pool as you can. Its a great benefit to the entire Affordable Care act if we can enroll in as many ways as possible. We crossed the 6 million mark. Reporter federal numbers currently at 6 million dont include off Exchange Platforms like e health so a burst in enrollments will plump up numbers in this key demographic. There are other important questions to answer about this deadline. What if i dont sign up . Will i have to pay 95. That will be the minimum. Im Geraud Moncure live at at t park where fans filed in for a fviewing party. A live report coming up in sports. The u. N. Panel issued a serious warning today. The noble prize Winning Group of scientists said the consequences are well underway and the worst is yet to come. Among the consequences, floods, heat waves, wildfires and droughts and what is coming is melting of polar icecaps causing the sea level to rise and warm and dramatically changing weather patterns. Not only will crop yields be affected so will economic growth. The blame is placed on Greenhouse Gas emotions. A lot of differing opinions. The environmental regulators are here this week tackling many of the same pressing issues as the u. N. Panel. Here is joe rosato jr. Reporter there isnt really anyone who doesnt want clean air or safe drinking water, but across the nation there are endless theories how to achieve it. Reporter california teamed up with oregon and washington on a plan for Carbon Pricing and promoting electric cars but convincing all 50 states to get on board might be the biggest Scientific Achievement of all. Thats a big challenge ahead. Lets bring in rob miata now. Perfect for Opening Night. Perfect timing. Right now the sun is breaking through. Skies over oakland and looks like a dry start to the game after 7 00, first pitch there. You see the sun there. Earlier in the day, a different story. Some parts picking up more than an inch out by fairfield. More than an inch of rain. Los altos and half moon bay, more than 3 4ths of an inch and saw the same totals into the south bay, too. Even though right now for the moment, you can see things are turning partly cloudy there is dark skies east of san jose and showers and the trend through tonight will be the rain kind of shutting down after the wild view we saw this afternoon, which had a lot of lightning strikes with the north bay, east bay and parts of the peninsula. Now not much left of this initial wave thats gone through. Thats a different story. If youre watching in morgan hill and south of san jose, downpour with the line heading down toward gill roy. San jose dark clouds to the east where its cold enough for snow. Mount hamilton 39 degrees. Cold air coming in and snow levels dropping. Here is a nice clearing were seeing now as you widen out, you can see more to deal with later tonight into tomorrow. So not the widespread heavy rain we saw today but these bands of showers which still may include thunder at times even overnight tonight. So you can see the transition until 11 00 tonight. Here comes a band right on through. That may include small hail now that the freezing level is 3500 feet, some may drop brief hail at times into tomorrow morning. Here is your 9 30 a. M. Snapshot tomorrow scattered showers and as the heating of the day progresses, youll see showers possibly stronger at times, which means the opportunity for thunder from 1 00 in the afternoon until 5 00 in the evening. Here is where things stand now and well see the numbers double for tomorrow. So it will be getting probably about the same amount of rainfall we saw today, maybe not close to an inch of rain in parts of the north bay but another half inch is likely as we go through tomorrow afternoon. For the sierra, this is great news. Late season boost to the snow pack. You can see these areas in pink picking up almost another two feet of snow with winter storm type environments and winter storm warnings in effect for chain controls on the highways and the snow level, by the way, as low as 3500 feet. That means the higher peaks around the bay area, Mount Hamilton or diablo could stick around. East of san jose gets snow. The third and last system comes in on thursday. See tl see it there in the switevenda forecast. Light rain at times but this system doesnt have a lot of pur punch to it and the warmup in the sevenday forecast, 70s returning as we head towards the weekend. Tomorrow should be another active day everything we saw with sunshine and brief showers and cool temperatures, too. Snow levels near 3500 feet, highs in the 50s and the threeday forecast through the transition, active weather tomorrow, wednesday showers clear out of the south bay, thursday for most locations dry, exception to the rule will be up there around the north bay with that system coming in thursday. The weekend ahead, highs in the 70s. Back to you. Thats impossible. Its spring. Thank you, rob rig. Right now, Geraud Moncure, how about before sports, a weather report, what it is like out there. Fans embattled the elements and shown up for todays viewing party for the opener against the giants and diamondbacks. Madison bumgarner on the hill against brandon mccarthy. The giants did not score. Were headed to the bottom of the inning with the diamondbacks coming up. Across the bay, they hope to play baseball as the as host the indians. Kate longworth is at the coliseum and has more. Reporter after consistent downpours throughout the day here at the coliseum, i have been told that the team is expecting a window where the weather should cooperate just before first pitch is scheduled to about 9 00 p. M. So the as are hopeful they will take the field at some point tonight and after talking to the players, its clear to see they are not letting the weather dampen their spirits on this exciting opening day. This is what were working for through the off season and through spring training and to finally be here, you know, the most anticipated and exciting day by far, i think. Its always exciting and ill say, its cool coming up here and playing in the bay series, even though we didnt get to play at the coliseum, but so this is exciting to get our fans back in the stands and cheering us on. I love the attitude that they bring here. Its not my favorite day of the year. I get anxious with it. There is a routine to baseball and opening day is the day that youre probably on edge a little more, but certainly for the fans, its very exciting, our group of fans make it very exciting and we would like to go out there and put on a good show.
