Reporter todays drought emergen decoloration, making it easier to transfer water and hiring 15 firefighters to staff fire engines in Northern California now, months ahead of schedule. We had a fire in one of the wettest places in the country, sustained fire over 300 acres the first week of january. That tells us statewide conditions are very dry. And while the dry and warm conditions mean big business for Food Truck Services out of hayward, it also has sebastian worried about the price of produce and the domino effect that could follow. No rain. Our people here in california are not going to be doing well. Well have to get it from other places, im sure. We thought two years ago when the midwest had the drought and corn prices went up, any livestock or dairy product started to restock higher prices. The Conservation Order means shorter showers and limited Outdoor Watering but for local wine makers, this drought could be a game changer. In a bad way. Nbc Jodi Hernandez joins us in livermore this evening with that story and how one municipality is getting customers to cut back, jodi . Reporter this is causing major changes. Normally Mother Nature does the job of keeping the bay areas water during the winter, but without rain many bay area growers are being forced to turn on their Irrigation Systems at a time most of us are scaling back. The extended dust has it bone dry. They still rely on rainwater to keep their roots moist. If we werent able to put some water on right now, the health of the vines would struggle in this coming year. Reporter so wine makers are taking the unusual step of watering their vines, balancing the call for continue sservatio the water we used and paid for, well have lower yields, so fewer grapes on the vines, and so that, of course, is going to cost us money. While wine grapes are in a unique situation, water experts say most plants can do without during the drought. Conditions are dry now, but you sometimes we feel we need something but the plant may be doing okay. With the governors call to conserve 20 , east bay mud says it plans to expand on a program that alerts customers how their water usage stacks up against their neighbors. They say everyone can scale back from fixing leaking toilets to shutting off the faucet while sudding up. If you can take shorter showers, thats immediate. We ask customers to limit showers to no more than five minutes, with the water shortage three to five minutes is ideal. Were back here live where the vines are in need of water, even though they are hardy and tough and normally make it through the winter season without extra irrigation but because farmers and growers are turning on the water, thats coasting them more money and could cost us more money for our wine.
