H1n1 new cases in particular. Experts say healthy adults and older children seem to be most vulnerable t the strain and this years flu vaccine does not protect against h1n1. Really nothing to fear. Its now a seasonal flu strain. Its not novel to us. Its not new. O okay . Reporter here are the most recent numbers. Last months death was in Santa Clara County which we just mentioned. They have six other h1n1 cases. Marin county reports ten cases and in contra costa county, at least six cases there. Health officials stress those numbers are normal for the season. Its bad for business and bad for the environment. The first sierra snow survey of the year is in the books, and its not good. This directly impacts our water supply and the bottom line of dozens of ski resorts. Were joined by chief meteorologist jeff ranieri who has our longrange forecast. We begin with chase cain whos off of highway 50 in eldorado county. Chase, how bad is it . Reporter raj, well, shy th enough snow to make a snowball, i q enough snow to replenish o states water supply by summer . Because when those officials went up there to take their first measurements of the season this morning, they found that the snow was six times less than it was last year. Its an annual march to precisely the same spot in the sierra to measure the snow pack and what the department of Water Resources found this year in some places was just bare ground, no snow at all. Obviously the results areiist particularly encouraging. Reporter official measurements today at phillips station showed 9. 3 inches of snow. At this time last year, there wasb . Z nearly 49 inch es 6 yrc theres no water right here right now. Not to say things cant turn around. Weve seen it before. Reporter in fact, it was just two years ago the snow was just as scarce. Making this year and 2012 californias two driest starts on4k record. Thats especially problematic when you consider that the snow that piles up here in the sierra is what eventually melts in the spring supplying a third of the water for the entire state. California, you know, snow accumulation is really governed by, you know, three or four, five or six storms, and, well, were losing quite a few of those, but if we can get into a wet pattern, perhaps we can but the further we go through the season, the less likely that becomes. Reporter and were here at a slightly lower elevation, but you can see theres maybe k aly more than 3 inches of snow. They say we have to be adding to this, not in inches but in feet, because if that doesnt happen, state Officials Say we could very well be looking at water restrictions by the summer. So thats why theyre encouraging everyone now to start thinking about how you use water. Live here in the Eldorado National forest, chase cain, nbc bay area news. All right, chase, thank you. As you said, were not just inches behind, were feet behind. Lets take a peek at lake tahoe. This is kings beach. Almost looks like a summer day. This is on north shore of tahoe. All the ski resorts in the area with limited runs and manmade snow. One ski resort, dodge ridge, has yet to open because of the lack of snow. More details now, we bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri with a look at how dry last year was. What really we can expect in the next couple months here. When you get a look at thisd on. Last year, 3. 80 inches of rainfall. Should have 14. 90 in the same time period. Easily breaking that old record set way back in 1953. Also a record dry year in oakland, santa cruz, San Francisco, downtown. The largest deficit in santa cruz. We should have 31. 35. That old record was back in 1989. So, again, a record dry 2013. We have been facing here across the bay area. Now, the drought is in effect here not only for the bay area, but for most of the west at this point. And it doesnt look good. As we look at the near term, there is a storm system getting close by next tuesday. Mainly off to the north. Likely missing the bay area at this point. As it moves in, it will break apart. But, again, were going to have details on the possibility of any kind of rainfall in that sevenday forecast coming up a little bit later on, you guys. Okay. Thanks so much. The 49ers practiced one last time in beautiful santa clara weather before and then you start playing, and the heart rate ramps up. You know, the hot blood races to the arteries. You know, to the vessels, to the capillaries. And theyre distributed to the fingers and the toes. Reporter but biology aside, there is technology at play that will make the 49ers feel a little bit more at home. A heated field. Well, youd have to put a heating element underneath your subbase. Reporter turf expert ben jones of san joses Purchase Green told us about how the 30 miles of heated tubing beneath Lambeau Field will keep things moving during the game. The ball would skip faster, it would play harder. The tackles would hurt more when you hit the ground. Looks like the 49ers might get a warm welcome after all. At last check, the game Time Temperature in green bay is m degre below zero.
