In texas, at least one protester was arrested for blocking the street. On the today show this morning, walmarts ceo defended the company saying they are paid fairly and employees are treated well. We understand that frustration after, you know, five years of a difficult economy and were going to do all we can to look for opportunities for them to advance. Officers say the 32yearold man was driving west on 80 near the soleano avenue exit after midnight when he crashed into the center divider. He got out of the car and was trying to cross the freeway when he was hit by several cars. Most of those drivers did not stop. The victim identified as Nathaniel Robinson of richmond died at the scene. In San Francisco, a woman who was hit by a garbage truck this morning has now died. The accident happened on interstate 80 at the seventh street off ramp. The road and several connector ramps were shut down for several hours for the investigation. Theres no word on why the woman was on the freeway. Back in may, another ecology garbage truck hit and killed a 21yearold bicyclist in the mission district. San jose fire investigators say an electrical issue was likely to blame for an Early Morning fire at an adult party store. The fire started just after 4 00 this morning at party time near west san carlos and meridian avenue. Several roads were shut down. During the holidays, especially hard to fathom because people get together with their family and friends and ey dont always think about people who are sick with cancer or people who have blood diseases. Reporter according to the american red cross, across the country, only 38 of americans are eligible to give blood. And out of that 38 , just 8 actually donate. There should never be a time when the blood supply goes so low that we dont have enough to respond to the hospitals. We could see some upper 30s and low 40s for tomorrow morning out around the north bay. Right now, not a lot of wind. Its the lack of wind. High pressure sitting on top of the bay area acting like a lid blocking off incoming storms. Thats going to lead to more air quality issues tonight. In parts of the north bay, 53 degrees in napa. 52 in fairfield. Mid50s to upper 50s in the south bay. If you jump ahead and look at the sevenday forecast, notice how those temperatures drop off. High temperatures by next week will be colder than the temperatures we see right now. Well talk more about that coming up in just a minute. First the air quality issues, though. The lack of wind, stable air mass around the bay area of High Pressure. Fortunately again for the north bay, got to spare the air alert for the entire area. No wood burning tonight. We need the wind and rain to mix thing ups with our atmosphere. Not going to get it with the light winds and the temperature inversion. Spare the air tonight. Very likely we could see another one as we head into tomorrow night and possibly into sunday. For the weekend, things are going to look just fine. The weather pattern will include some patches of low clouds on the coast. As we head through the morning just before sunrise, a band of high clouds goes on by. Across the bay area. Then back into the sunshine as we head through the afternoon. Turning cool into the evening. Saturday and sunday, just fine. The bigger changes coming up as we head toward tuesday and wednesday. As the jet stream buckles allowing this cold pocket of air to drop down the west coast. Instead of diving east of the sierra as it typically does, this system will drop right over the bay area so during the day tuesday, the winds are going to pick up out of the north and our high temperatures will drop probably a good 15 to 20 degrees cooler than the highs we saw today. So low 50s as we head towards the middle part of next week. Well get lows in the mid30s to low 40s. If theres just enough moisture out there, some snow showers possible, certainly for the sierra. Close to 3,000 feet. But as this brings enough moisture to the bay area, possibly could see a few showers of snow near 3,000 feet perhaps in those north bay hilltops. Something to watch as you head toward wednesday and thursday. Heres a look at the temperature drop and the extended forecast for the south bay going from 70s as we get out of the weekend to 57 degrees on tuesday. Same story from the peninsula and as you head down toward San Francisco. Well see those temperatures dropping fairly steadily. As you take a look at the north bay, 55 degrees down from the 72 we saw in spots today near napa. East bay temperatures also cooling off about 10 to 15 degrees as we approach the middle part of next week. In the meantime, tomorrow looks great. Youll see these temperatures looking pretty good. Upper 60s to near 70s in santa rosa. 70 tomorrow in oakland. Low 70s around pleasanton and livermore. Around San Francisco, mid60s. Big game at palo alto tomorrow. Notre dame in town. We are now just hours away from the midnight deadline tomorrow the white house is imposing to get the Health Care Website working correctly. Officials are trying to curb expectations, but say they are already some big improvements. The website has increased its speed and decreased error rates. Its now believed to be capable of supporting 50,000 users at once. With poll numbers at record lows, the stakes are high for president obama. Obi the once obese wiener dog held a meet and greet at a shelter in concord. Since being rescued in oregon last year, he lost more than half his body weight. Theres a new twist tonight in the controversy over genetically modified foods. An article published last year linked genetically modified corn to cancer but now that article has been retracted. It was initially published in the scientific journal food and chemical toxicology. And it coincided with the California Campaign for prop 37 which would have required labeling for all genetically modified foods. The publishers of food and chemical toxicology now say that further scrutiny showed problems with the methods used in the study but the authors say that they still stand by their research. The use of marijuana as a medicine has grown in popular over the last ten years. Some wonder how safe it really is and what health risks may come with it. Nbc bay areas joe rosado jr. Shows us one San Francisco doctor who is finding those answers in the deceased. Californias medical Marijuana Movement has exploded in the last ten years like the endless strains and hybrids filling the market. Users now come from all ages and walks of life. But dr. Nicholas limos isnt so much interested in the lives as he is in the death. For the past ten years, lamos has served as chief forensic toxicologist for San Franciscos medical examiner. Weve been screening for cannabis in all of our with every death the department runs tests looking for traces of alcohol and medications, including marijuana. In any type of case, we get to see cannabis, whether its homicide or suicide or natural deaths, we see cannabis. Through the research he sees patterns that concern him. Especially in cases of women over 40 who have a condition known as enlarged heart. Enlarged heart and cannabis use in women has been shown by our research to have statistically more greater chances of causing death. Reporter he believes like any drug cannabis should come with a warning. We may need to evaluate the possibility of using a black box warning about cardiac conditions and use of cannabis. Reporter but a psychiatrist who spent his career studying the effects of drugs isnt convinced by lamos theory. Theres been a lot of research looking into the possible harmful effects of marijuana. There have been thousands of studies which have not found harmful effects of that kind. Reporter while there are no requirements medical cannabis carry warnings, some do. Every new member gets a fact sheet listing potential cannabis side effects including heart issues. In great detail we warn people about, if they are taking other medications, to talk to their doctors first. We are hoping that prescribing physicians, as well as patients will use this medication or prescribe this medication after having their hearts evaluated for possible risks. Bay Area Temperatures 5 to 10 degrees above where we should see for this time of the year. That includes down to the Central Coast as well. Tonight, light winds. High pressure keeping a stable atmosphere. Its the north bay that will see the worst of this heading into tomorrow morning. Wood burning has been banned again tonight into tomorrow and very likely this pattern will continue at times into the weekend. But the weather is looking pleasant for your afternoon outdoor plans as we go through saturday and sunday. The pattern will repeat with patches of low clouds moving in across the bay around San Francisco for the morning. And then high clouds passing by as we move through the afternoon. And then looking at sunshine through the day saturday. Also in to sunday. But the bigger changes are going to arrive as we head towards next week. This cold blast of air starting to come down tuesday into wednesday. Its going to take those 60s and 70s and shove them off into southern california. By the time we get into wednesday, now were talking highs only in the low 50s and these colder systems that drop in out of the north, typically dont have as much moisture but we still think well see at least a few scattered showers toward the sierra and maybe in some of the coastal hilltops. And the air will be cold enough to see snow showers as low as 3,000 feet. The question is, though, how much moisture is going to be there when all this cold air starts to arrive. Right now doesnt look like much but notice the sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen, almost 20 degrees cooler from the numbers we saw. So a look ahead at the big change well see during the time frame from sunday through tuesday. By the time we get to tuesday, san jose dropping down to 57 degrees and the pattern does repeat from the peninsula over to San Francisco. Within three days see those highs dipping from the high 70s into the mid50s and likely by wednesday, highs near 50 degrees in parts of the bay area. But the holiday weekend, still fine.
