Just going too slow, too low. He joins us now with a look at the last minute. While the ntsb says it will be several more weeks or even month before they can give a preliminary determination of the exact cause of this crash, the data and evidence are pointing more and more to some type of air iror problem inside that cockpit. Today we heard more about the so called black boxes and what they recorded in the final minutes of this flight and we put that data into a Flight Simulator to get a first hand view for ourselves of what exactly went wrong. So this is how it would have looked on final approach. You are looking at a blue sky view of a boeing triple 7. We are in an airplane simulator at hiller aviation museum. We first asked museum ceo to show us how the normal landing would look. But on saturday, asiana 214s deskrend descent was more like this. Thats essentially what would happen. We want to understand why they were doing it, what they knew and what they understood. Today ntsb chair woman sbl explained what they found in the black boxes. Thats exactly where flight 214 was just a half minute before impact. But instead of maintaining that speed of 137 naughts we ran the simulation about 15 times. We were able to get it to land. But whenever we put the parameters in it never made it to shore. Bob flew commercial airlines for united for 27 years. He says even though the simulation looks real, at 106 naughts, you should already be on the ground. If youre below that speed, you better damn well speed up. Reporter and ive talked to a halfdozen pilots. All of them tell me it should have landed in the bay a third of the mile from where it landed. It was that short. The captain at the controls was in training, landing a triple 7 here at sfo for the first time. One of the questions remains, why didnt the check airman take over or correct the problems that were developing . Coming up at 6 30 we will take you through the exact timeline. Four people in that cockpit. We are getting a look at the students from china who died. The san mateo coroner said he will not release an official cause of death for at least two weeks. He wants to inform the families and be sure to conclude his report before row leasing the details publicly. The parents of the two girls and some of the relatives of the Chinese Students who were injured in the crash will be landing in San Francisco just a few hours from tonight. Early this morning they boarded a bus in china headed for the heir port in shanghai. Their flight path is mirroring the one their children flew. The father of one of the teenager whose died is quoted as saying i feel so terrible, im going to peck up my little girl. Chinese state media reports that once they land theyll go directly to the hospital to see the teenagers that are still being treated. Some of the victims still being treated. The hospital admitted a total of 162 patients. So far, 45 of those have been discharged. 17 remain hospitalized. Stanford is still treating eight of its original 55 patients. As this flight was crash landing nor plane full of passengers got a front row seat which was terrifying. They had landed less than a minute earlier on the next runway over. On a story, scott budman spoke to one of the passengers. This was terrifying to watch it from afar. I cant imagine being the next runway over. Reporter the passengers were happy to be home from the east coast. They will not forget what they saw a minute later. As the crash of asiana 214 happened on runway 28 left, another plane had just landed on runway 28 right. We landed a minute before this happened if that much. Reporter she was on the flight looking out the window. Our plane landed. And all of a sudden it felt like he was pulling over to the left of the runway and off to the taxiway and stopped. Reporter she saw right away what we saw later. I looked down the runway, and there bass some black smoke. And then it was gray smoke. And then it was white smoke. Reporter all playing out in front of another set of passengers watching from their seats as rescue crews moved in. I just felt really bad for the people who had been on that plane, thinking what a frightening experience. Reporter even more meaningful for jacobson whose son is a pilot. Yeah. The first thing that goes through your mind is hes taking off today on another flight. And yeah, it does. It does. Reporter Jane Jacobson says at the time the passengers were not asked to explain what they saw. They were shuttled off the runway and went home. Many of the survivors are teenagers who are now holed up in hospitals and hotel rooms several Thousands Miles from their the families. They got a visit from the con sul general. Right now hes the best theyve got. Reporter yes, he definitely is. We got to see some of those students today and what really struck me is how young some of them look and to think about the fact they are so far away from their families is just heart breaking. Some of them got some assistance from the consul general. We talked with their tour guide who said they seem to be doing better today when yesterday just asking how they were doing was enough to bring them to tears. Looking tired and a bit dazed, 26 students got words of comfort from the chinese consul general. Some of the students cried, clutching bandages. The consul general praised the youngsters for their strength. Two other classmates remained in critical condition. He distributed small bags filled with basic necessities like toothbrushes and promised to help them as long as they are in the bay area. Translator it is up to them to decide what is the next step. If they want to stay here and continue their tour, we have no different opinion. If they want to go back and go back home reporter the students are traveling with four teachers. Their staff booked a San Jose Hotel where they could all stay together, shop together and they are being transported to and from doctor visits. I think its too hard pour them to talk, yeah. Of course. Reporter some of the students families will arrive tonight. But even before then, the consulate will make sure their documents are in order for whatever comes next. Translator this afternoon the consulate will come to the hotel after work and they will take photos for the stewudentst. They will produce documents and issue the traveling documents to the students. Reporter a staff member with the tour group tell please that he expects that the students will have to stay in san jose at least for a couple more days as their families start to arrive and they get their travel documents in order. Then theyll have to decide whether or not they want to stay or whether they want to go home. Chris sanchez. Its their job to rush toward emergencies and not run away from them. I cant leave somebody sitting there to die and you stand there doing nothing. A hectic race against time. First responders reveal what it was like running into that burning airplane. Night cancellations and delays are finally easing here at sfo, a live report coming up. Plus a major let down. Why the bay bridge opening could be months away. And im in the weather center. Take a look at whats rolling in on our sky camera network. Well have your fog factor forecast coming up in a few minutes. This has been difficult on so many levels. Cancellations, lengthy delays and thwarted travel plans. Its been a hectic 48 hours in sfo. But this evening things are starting to return to normal in San Francisco. We have an update on flight delays. Reporter sfo was full of passengers hoping to fly out tonight. Take a look. They are in for possible delays. Flights are delayed by about an hour and a half at this point. But there are some good news. People who have been strapped for two days are headed home. Because of the crash only three of the four runways are open. And sfo is on a ground dough lay program. That means the airport is landing fewer planes than normal which is causing arrival delays and dough par tour delays. Add in hundreds of passengers that were trying to get on flights that were canceled on saturday and you have busy ticket counters and long security lines. For some the delays are a matter of hours. For others its days. Well, my original flight to kansas city was supposed to leave at 6 10, then it was delayed to 8 10, then 10 00 which will put me about 5 30 in kansas city. We dont get to home for about three days, but if we drive it will be six hours. Reporter we talked to a lot of people who were delayed who say they understand the issue. Some people arriving here after days of waiting say seeing the wreckage out on the runway puts it all in perspective. So still slow going for a lot of passengers, but some are getting on board and getting to their final destination. Its what they train for and what theyre expected to do, but rushing into a burning plane is still harrowing for First Responders arriving at the tarmac. The real deal, putting their lives on the line. We share some of those First Responders stories now. Reporter San Francisco firefighter will be the first to admit there are some things that terrify him, like public speaking. Im never comfortable in front of a crowd. Reporter but on saturday, his only thought was how to get inside. The only way in the plane was either try to grab a ladder, which would take a lot of time or go up the chute and went for it. Reporter he climbed the chute and started searching for survivors. The seats were at different ankles. And it was pretty much a debris field in there. Reporter in the rear of the plane near where the tail had torn away, he joined another firefighter tending to five passengers injured and trapped in the debris. There was a woman, a man standing over the woman who was ambulatory but was waiting to make sure she was going to get off that plane. There was a person i saw that was trapped. Reporter outside the plane, Jim Cunningham came to the aid of the crew. He pulled out his knife, opened it up. And one. Crew came down, grabbed it. There was another crew member. I opened mine up, i tossed it to him, we released passengers. Reporter cunningham didnt let the fact that he didnt have an oxygen mask or jacket keep him from rushing inside the plane. I ran inside there and i saw a few passengers. Their seats were trapped in there. I got to help these people. There were nuch people on board that we were able to tackle multiple passengers at the same time. We able to get them off quickly. Reporter smoke began to fill the cabin. When you get the real thing you fall back on what youre trained on. And thats what takes over. Reporter but there was no training for what they faced today as he stood in front of reporters to tell his story. First off id like to apologize to you all. Im very uncomfortable up here. No hesitation from true heroes. Now First Responders prepare for this type of emergency and they do it often, as do the flight personnel. Coming up were going to take you inside their flight preparations and show you what they do to keep you safe. Other major headlines, the opening of the bay bridge has been postponed. Well show you inside a cockpit where pilots learn to be prepared for just about anything. Plus reporter planning to fly with your children this summer . Well talk with experts at stanford about what you should say to your children who may have anxiety about flying after the asiana plane crash. Just two days after the asiana crash were getting a lot of crucial answers tonight, what happened, whos to blame and how the kids are responding who were on that flight. Weres also getting a look at those two 16 year old girls, Close Friends from china who died in the crash. The official cause of death wont be available for another two weeks. We have multiple reports for you tonight, from the latest on the investigation to stories of heroism and survival. But we begin with our investigative reporter. Speed. Its one of the dominant factors were hearing now. Yesterday we told you about the seven seconds before impact, the last moments as the pilots struggled to gain speed and get that plane back up into the sky. Today the critical number to remember is 34 seconds. That was the time that the mane started falling from the sky. This is the plane starting about 17 miles out from runway 28 l. It was on visual approach to land at sfo as all planes were on saturday. About a minute out it was 1,000 feet, flying at 140 naughts. 20 seconds later, something went very, very wrong. The pilots apparently did nothing to stop it for more than 26 seconds. He should have just gotten out of there. Reporter this is probably what it looked like flying that boeing 777 over the bay to land at sfos airport runway 28 l. This view from a Flight Simulator, programmed to take us through the exact speeds and altitudes that the flight data recorder says the plane went through on its descent saturday morning. With respect to the crew, were looking at what they were doing. And we want to understand why they were doing it. We want to understand what they knew pan ha they understood. Reporter deborah explained what she found on the flight recorder. At about 1600 feet the auto pilot was disengaged. This was about 82 seconds prior to impact. Reporter just a minute and 14 seconds before impact, the plane was at 1400 feet, flying at 170 naughts or 196 miles an hour. 39 seconds later a critical point. At about 500 feet, the airspeed was approximately 134 naughts. And this was 34 seconds prior to impact. Reporter thats slower than the threshold speed of 137 naughts needed to safely continue the glide path and land safely. But it takes the crew 26 seconds to realize there is a problem and do anything about it. At about 125 feet, the throttle started moving forward. And the airspeed was approximately 112 naughts. This was 8 seconds prior to impact. Reporter that means the plane was only 8 seconds away from impact when someone applied the throttle to try to gain speed, power and lift. About 3 seconds prior to impact, the flight data recorder recorded its lowest speed of 103 naughts. Reporter way too slow, way too low. We put the data points to represently kate that final approach of flight 214. And three different times it crashed in the water, never even made it to land. So it is quite remarkable that given the parameters, these pilots were able to maintain and make it all the way to the runway at all. But, again, what were they doing during those 26 seconds when they went below the minimum speed. Why . You talk about the naughts is that about 40 or 50 Miles Per Hour slower than they should be goi going . Reporter this was significantly slower. They got down in the 120s. Thats the difference. Now for the kids. The families of a Southern CaliforniaChristian Camp say theyre grieving for the victims of this crash. The two teenage girls that were killed were among 35 Chinese Students scheduled to arrive at the church in Southern California. They were going to study english and live with host families for the summer. The surviving Exchange Students are returning home. Host families and Church Members say even though those students didnt meet with them down south theyre still in shock about the tragic news. I have three children and it just struck me as a mom to think about sending my children off on a wonderful, what was to be a pleasurable trip and to have Something Like that happen. Church members will host a prayer vigil for the victims thursday night. Seeing that crash is disturbing for adults. How do you me your kids feel safe and what do you say when youre headed out this summer on vacation. I know you spoke to a trauma expert. This is heavy stuff even for adults. Reporter it certainly is for all of us. What we have seen in the last couple of days plays a role in how we feel about flying. And that is especially true for kids. As you mentioned, the summer is a very busy time for children to fly. We saw a lot of kids out here flying with their families heading out for vacation. And we talked to a trauma expert from stanford about what parents can do to help their children who may now be afraid to fly. This family is packing up and heading to sfo to catch a flight to germany, a trip that comes 48 hours after asiana flight 214 crash landed at sfo killing two passengers. 14 year old nina says shes feeling uneasy. I saw a few pictures on the internet, which was really shocking. And yeah. Right now im a little bit nervous about the flight. Reporter this summer, hundreds of bay area kids enjoying Family Vacations will be heading to airports and boarding planes. A psychologist and trauma expert says its possible some children may be afraid to fly after seeing these pictures. Fear after a situation like this is normal. We worry about fear when its enduring and it lasts longer than a month. Reporter the doctor says kids may also become more fearful of flying because the two passengers killed on the crash were young. Both victims were 16. Because they can identify more and they worry about kids going through an experience like this. And in this case something has happened to kids. And they know about it. So theyre going to have thoughts about it. Theyre going to have maybe thoughts that theyre more vulnerable or theyre going to have thoughts this could happen to me. Reporter he says if your youngster is now afraid to fly try exposing him or her to flights gradually. Take them to the airport where they can see planes land safely. Reporter ninas father says he talked to all three of his children about the crash. We discussed about the dangers of travel and that flying on airplanes is still the safest possibility to get from point a to b. Reporter the doctor says thats one of the best thing parents can do, have an open discussion with their kids and remind them its okay to be scared. As the family heads to sfo they say they plan to pay more attention to safety instructions and look for exits when they get on their plane, another way they can feel a little safer when they fly. And the doctor also says if your child is still afraid to fly one month aft crash, you should try to seek some professional counseling. Reporting live in san jose, nbc bay area news.
