A lot of people went to work in the hotel, restaurant and entertainment industries. More people started to look for work in june. Also a healthy sign. Commuters around the bay area celebrated the end of the bart strike. It ended this afternoon, giving both sides about a month to iron out a long term agreement. But there was collateral damage. The nearly week long strike cost the economy about 73 million a day. At least according to the Bay Area Council. Sam brock tells us how the group came up with that figure and whether its accurate. Its a difficult task to pin down exactly how much the local economy hemorrhaged this week as a result of that strike. Now the 73 million figure for worker productivity could be in the right ballpark, although we do poke a few holes there. But as a measure of total Economic Impact, as youre about to find out shall the losses likely dwarfed 73 million a day. You may hear train like sounds coming from the bart station, but these cars as the signs would suggest, have been idle for days. And as the saying goes, time is money. The estimate we came up with was 73 million a day. We think thats conservative. Reporter at the start of this four and a half day strike, the Bay Area Council found its costing our local economy some nice change, to the tune of 73 million a day. But where does that figure come from . The council told me theres 2. 6 million workers in the bay area, and half or at least 1. 3 million travel at least one county for work. The council assumed 25 decided to work from home, leaving you with 970,000 people traveling at least one county. Now heres the cost formula they used. 970,000 people times the areas median per hour wage of 37. 25 times two hours of arm delay. You get 73 million lost in productivity. But here are a few things to consider about this study. It assumes that barts daily ridership of 400,000 is commuting to work. But it might really be 200,000 if the riders are commuting both ways. Then what percentage of those are students, seniors or those not contributing to the labor force . 25,000 . 50,000 . What about commuters taking Public Transit within the same county . The Public Impact would change. And the council acknowledges that. We tried to make our best estimate based on our knowledge and understanding of the bay area transit situation. We are very comfortable and confident that theres a significant Economic Impact to the bay area region. Reporter some business owns would certainly say its been significant. The results have been prickly for those situated near a bart station. But loss of Consumer Spending was not included in the study. On account of how difficult it would be to calculate. 5 to 10 daily, you know. Reporter what would that equate to in terms of dollars . Somewhere in the 300, 400 a day. Reporter this owner says theres 14 businesses just on this block near the mission, 16th street bart stop. Now extrapolate that figure. For 44 bart stops across the bay area. Now if you propose that each bart station has 14 stores on the same block or thereabouts, each losing 400 a day in a drop of foot traffic. Youd get 250,000 a day in lost revenue. But they brief its likely thousands of Stores Affected in some way by the strike. How much would that cost . A lot more than 73 million a day. Thats todays reality check. At san jose, it is absolutely crystal clear. Then as we head off to the north what youre going to notice is a little bit of haze moving into fremont. Thats part of the marine layer, the onshore flow.
