Of all the times ive donated, of course ive always felt that, you know, its going for a good purpose and that somebody is getting a benefit from it. Reporter six years ago a baby was born in the east bays john mural hospital with a special need for blood. He suffered from a rare bone marrow disorder. Basically his bone marrow isnt able to produce red blood cells. He received blood every four weeks, basically, to survive. Reporter through the first six years of his life, he received regular blood transfusions through the american red cross. And we actually reached 0 out to our donors and asked them if they would be interested in donating for this specific baby, how we referred to the patient. It was amazing. I mean, with each blood transfusi transfusion, i was always wondering in the back of my mind, who these anonymous donors were. Reporter those who agreed one was tisdale. Tightlipped about it. Tonights reality check sam brock with the president s response to the negotiation collapse and accuracy. Sam . Reporter good evening. One thing we cant do, in fact, we are in no position to do is to tell you who is to blame here even though thats all washington lawmakers want to talk about. What we can break down is why the president is correcting he made a good faith effort but wrong in claiming he has nothing to do with the outcome. In a friday press conference that got at times a bit testy so what more do you think i should do . President obama lamented the sequestration cuts that are now a reality, pointing the blame as squarely as he could on republicans shoulders. Lets look at the truthfulness of his claims. Im prepared to take on the problem where it exists, on entitlements, and do some things that my own party really doesnt like what Speaker Boehner and the republicans have said is we cannot do any revenue. We cant do a dimes worth of revenue. Reporter well, here are the facts. The president is right that hes offered reforms to entitlements, hundreds of millions of dollars in cuts to medicare as part of a failed grand bargain in 2011 and cap Social Security benefits during the recent fiscal cliff talks. All of that is true and its also true republicans have balked at the idea of replacing sequester cuts even partially with new revenues. But according to Santa Clara University political Professor James cottrell when it comes to deal making president s arent supposed to be facilitators not finger pointers. I think in that respect the criticism is valid. If he cannot lead these people and bring them together, thats a significant problem. Reporter so the president might be right in principle but not in outcome. As for those controversial new revenues Speaker Boehner just a couple months ago identified these tax loopholes and tax breaks and said we should close they have and raise revenue. Reporter last winter Speaker Boehner did propose closing tax loopholes but not as an alternative to spending cuts. The president is taking the speakers comments out of context. The speaker has always maintained that he doesnt want to cut out loopholes to raise taxes but rather keep taxes at their current rate. Reporter the push and pull continues over revenues and spending cuts. There is one point the president was absolutely correct, the majority of americans stand behind his approach. The latest poll shows about 60 of people support new revenues as part after deficit reduction plan. 45 blame republicans in congress for our current pred t predicament compared with 32 president obama. I take responsibility for any missteps that ive had as a head coach. Reporter it turns out gaels gone wild was more than a marketing slogan in the eyes of the ncaa after they slapped st. Marys with four years of probation for recruiting violations. Im not perfect. Ive made some mistakes along the way her and some things if i could do it over i would do it differently. Reporter the recruiting violations did not involve the 11 australian born players who have played for st. Marys under head coach randy bennett. A little unfortunate and they were saying it might be a french involving a french player that didnt even go here. Reporter gaels fans wont have to worry about bennett going anywhere next season, literally. Along with a fivegame suspension, bennett will not be allowed to recruit off campus. The team cant go on any foreign trips or participate in any preseason tournaments. I dont think the punishment fits the crime. Its way too heavy for a small school like this. The penalty is harsh. It will have an affect on our program. Its a hole we put ourselves in and have to get ourselves out of. Reporter with all the penalties going into effect next season, st. Marys remains focused on this year. The gaels will wrap up their regular season against santa clara. Then its off to las vegas for the tournament where they hope to get another crack at gonzaga who will likely be the Number One Team in the country. Im kim coyle, nbc bay area. Thank you, kim. The gaels do have a couple weeks to appeal those violations and punishments handed down. We have one pro babble note. The warriors taking on the clippers. No good all around on the hardwood t.
