the sailors involved. among the missing are james bradford, age 41 of chicago, alexis busch of larkspur, jordan fromm of kentfield and alan cahill. confirmed dead, marc kasann of belvedere. the three rescued are nick voss, brian chong of tiburon and elmer morressy. eight groups of flowers for the eight sailors involved. yesterday afternoon the 38 foot sailboat "low speed chase" ran aground. during an annual race sponsored by the yacht club. three were rescued by the rocks from a helicopter. one sailor was found deceased in the water. now the search continues for the four others. >> when a tragedy of this magnitude hits, we're missing four sailors and have one confirmed fatality. it's very, very serious and very tragic and hit everybody here very, very hard. not knowing what the end result is even more difficult. we're waiting minute by minute is what we're dealing with. >> reporter: and here's the latest from the coast guard on the status of the search. right now there are two airplanes, two blackhawk helicopters from the air national guard, a coast guard cutter and two other coast guard vessels out searching for these missing sailors and still no sign of them. the search was called off during the early morning hours because of poor visibility but then was back on by daybreak. i'll keep you posted with any new developments. live in belvedere, monty francis, nbc bay area news. >> thanks, for the update. and we turn now to developing news. regarding radio host ralph barbieri. his attorney says the former knbr host was wrongfully terminated and plans to file a lawsuit soon. the attorney says barbieri was let go from the stage because he's 66 years old and suffering from early stages of parkinson's disease. they say they parted ways with the host because he was consistently late to work. the attorney says the station's reason is just an excuse to get rid of barbieri knowing he's likely to rack up costly medical views in the future. when he was fired on tuesday, he did not receive severance pay. he worked at the station for 28 years and was best known as the razor on the razor and mr. t. show. tomorrow faculty members at all 23 california state university campuses will begin voting on what could be a historic strike. if approved and implemented it would be the largest strike of higher education teachers in u.s. history. contract talks have stalled between the california faculty association and the board of trustees. the union says its members have been working without a contract for nearly two years and if the majority of teachers say yes to a strike, it gives the union an option to order a walkout. >> the chancellor is offering a contract of takeaways, and using the budget crisis as an excuse to defund public education. >> this will be the second time faculty members have taken a strike vote in recent months. the last one addressed unresolved issues in the now-expired contract. president obama is calling for a thorough investigation of the secret service prostitution scandal in colombia. at least 11 agents are reportedly involved. brian mooar has the very latest. >> reporter: president obama's summit visit to colombia has been upstaged by allegations of scandalous misconduct by some secret service personnel sent there to ensure his safety. >> if it turns out that some of the allegations that have been made in the press are confirmed, then, of course, i'll be angry. we're representing the people of the united states, and when we travel to another country, i expect us to observe the highest standards. >> reporter: the hotel caribe is said to be a scene of a night of over the top partying on wednesday that included booze and prostitutes. 11 secret service agents and uniform division officers have been relieved of duty. five members of the military are also said to be under investigation. the president stayed at a different hotel and the agents involved were not members of the elite presidential protection division. but now the whole agency and its culture are cast in an unflattering light. >> the investigation will not be about the 11 to 20 or more involved. it will be about how did this happen and how often has this happened before? >> reporter: prostitution is legal in some parts of colombia, the secret service says it holds its employees to a higher standard and has zero tolerance. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. today exactly 100 years after the "titanic" disaster, two cruise ships stopped at the very site where the great ship sank in the north atlantic. the cruise ships were chartered specifically to mark the anniversary. and at 2:20 this morning, the moment the "titanic" slipped below the waves, two wreaths were sent to sea. descendants prayed and reflected on the april night in 1912. in all, more than 1,500 people died. >> you know, i'm just so glad to be here and i -- it's a relief now to me. i can leave. i can leave. i'm still going to look forward to seeing him on the other side. >> at the time, the "titanic" was the world's largest and most lex luxuriousship. it was traveling from england to new york when it struck an iceberg and sank less than three hours later. people in the midwest spent the day cleaning up after more than 100 tornados hit this weekend. one of the hardest hit areas, woodward, oklahoma. five people were killed there when a tornado hit a mobile home park. wichita, it took seconds for a tornado to tear apart a portion of this boeing plant. nearby neighborhoods were left destroyed. >> everything's gone. it's just gone. everything we had worked for all our liveses >> have you ever heard the statement, get out with the clothes on your back, that's what happened to us. we don't have anything. >> as if choosing its targets, the tornado tee strdestroyed on and barely touched the next. the iron is still sitting on the ironing board while outside, the house, total devastation. in sonoma county, detectives are interviewing witnesses after a shooting in petaluma that sent to people to the hospital after 2:00 this afternoon on keller street. officers received several 911 calls about shots fired. when they arrived, they found a man and woman with gunshot wounds. investigators are still working out to figure out what happened but they say the pair had been visiting a person inside an attorney's office. they do not believe anyone else was involved. >> well, we're processing the crime scene now. again, we don't think there's any outstanding suspects or anybody else involved so it's kind of just the status here. we're working for the district attorney's office to come down here and evaluate the scene with us. >> paramedics rushed the two people to the hospital. as of late this afternoon, they were in serious condition. coming up next at 6:00, one south bay man is healthy and thriving today because of the generosity of a heart donor. we'll show you how despite the three decades difference in age, the donor and the recipient have a whole lot in common. plus, the dog so big he sleeps in a queen-sized bed and so tall that on his hind legs he could look shaquille o'neal right in the eye. >> i'm not worried about coming back at all. it's not even a question. i'll be back. >> giants closer brian wilson says he'll be back, but when is the big question on everyone's mind. we'll hear more from wilson later on in spor a 62-year-old man in san jose is thriving and healthy thanks to a new heart. the donor was a man from the east bay. this weekend the two families were able to meet. terrance shaw owes his life to a 32-year-old man from hayward whose heart he received. the organ came from william who goes by his middle name of joey. he made the decision at the age of 16 to be an organ donor. july of last year, 62-year-old shaw received the heart transplant. just months after being told he might not even make it to the parking lot of his doctor's office alive. within two weeks of the transplant shaw was back to riding his bicycle. he has a lot to be thankful for especially to the family who he first met yesterday. >> i think we all teared up a bit. and, you know, i just kept thinking, as did larry, the lung recipient, this is so bizarre, it's so much harder on them than it is for us. and, you know, this just brings all the grief back. you know, it's been nine months since they lost their son. >> shaw said it was a difficult meeting and understands he's a reminder to the family of their loss, but he also says he is extremely grateful to have met them and will honor his donor's life by taking care of the heart he was given. he and his wife plan to travel, something william's family said they always loved to do or want to do. shaw is heavily involved in company. back in march, the company announced it would shut down 50 stores across the country by the end of the summer. we have some disturbing health news tonight for anyone working the night shift. beyond the inconvenience, there's new evidence the graveyard shift can make you sick. nbc's chief science correspondent robert bazell explains. >> reporter: just when most americans are getting their normal sleep, 21 million others are working nights. >> i average maybe four hours a day and even on my nights off i average maybe 3 1/2, 4 hours of sleep. so i'm always tired. >> reporter: as she works at the women's hospital in boston, where new research provides further evidence how harmful shift work can be. scientists put 21 healthy volunteers in the sleep lab for three weeks. by changing lights irregularly and taking away clocks and other clues about time, they altered the subjects' normal body clocks. within just a few days when the volunteers ate, their bodies responded differently to the food with dangerous effects. >> glucose levels went higher and stayed that way for several hours. this was because of decreased insulin release from the pancreas. together these reflect an increased risk of diabetes. >> reporter: several studies have shown shift workers are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other problems. this study is one of the first to show exactly how the body is harmed. the diabetes risk was so great that three of the healthy subjects in the study became prediabetic during the experiment. the researchers advise when possible, shift workers try to eat when their body clocks are not out of whack. for she and her co-workers, they know how difficult that can be. >> busy, so we don't go on regular meal breaks. >> when you're at work to the weekend, and a little known holiday tomorrow called emancipation day. the irs says 70% of taxpayers have already filed their returns. in case you haven't, there are also some tax breaks you might want to remember. there are certain credits for college-related expenses such as loan interest and room and board. if you care for a sick relative, you can declare them as a dependent. it's a
