coverage on our web site, nbcbayarea.com. just search the cove for giants news. switching to the weather, it certainly was wild. more than 750 lightning strikes. it was quite a show,nd a the wild weather continued today. a lot of the south bay was pounded by hail. it rattled decks and roofs, varying in size from little bbs to quarter size. but is it over? meteorologist rob maetta is in the weather center for a look at weather. rob? >> the rain totals were very impressive, too. in fact, we had a month's worth of rain for the month of april coming down in the bay area. about two inches of rain came down in a few hours time. all the bay area setting bay area rain records as we did get that rain in about 12 hours' time. 750-plus lightning strikes aided by wind unusual for the bay area. we had the heat setting up for a great plains night for the bay area and that hail adding a charge to the clouds, which adds a bit like a battery. today we didn't have much moisture. we still had a few scattered showers and a few intense showers still flaring up in napa county and on into selano county. as the sun sets, we'll see the showers lose their energy and we're setting the stage for a pretty nice weekend ahead. we'll look at some changes in the forecast when we come back. >> no more lightning, correct, or hail, but plenty of cleanup and recovery. marty francis joins us in piedmont where a landslide has prompted police to close a busy street. monty, what's the status there and when is it going to reopen? >> it is murago avenue and it connects piedmont to oakland. you can see that police do have the road blocked off. it is closed and that's because of a massive amount of dirt that came crashing down just on the other side of those signs. with more than 2 inches of rain falling during a 24-hour period in the east bay, the ground was saturated, and this morning at about 7:00, a hillside in piedmont gave way. crews worked most of the day to remove a tree that came down with about 60 cubic yards of dirt on muraga avenue near max welt on road. cindy mays was one of the 600 homes that lost power when a tree snapped some power lines. >> we've been here for about seven years, and last year the rain didn't bring anything down. this year, last night it must have been pretty bad. >> yes, it's very rare. we haven't had anything in muraga treewise like this. >> engineers from the city of piedmont spent the afternoon examining one home that sits on top of the hill trying to determine if it was safe for the homeowner to stay inside. piedmont city spokesman says the long-term safety of the hillside is a concern. >> we're working on getting the trees out now, but the hillside is still fairly unstable, so we want to make sure we do it right so it doesn't cause any additional damage to the private property or jeopardize the safety of people traveling on the road. >> elsewhere in the bay area, a few inches of standing water on the connector to 380 from highway 101 prompted the chp to shut down those lanes for most of the day as crews worked to pump the water off the roadway. and one person was injured in this crash to the highway connector to northbound 280. it was one of the crashes across the bay area today where slick and dangerous driving conditions were contributing factors. and raj, we just got an update from the city of piedmont. to answer your question, muraga will remain closed until at least tomorrow afternoon. that homeowner i mentioned, he will be allowed back in his home tonight. that's because the city has decided not to redtag his home. pg&e still working to restore power to about 55 customers. the power is expected to come on sometime tonight. monty francis, nbc bay area news. debris swept up the ocean could have contributed to the death of a six-year-old girl in san jose due to a freak accident on the santa cruz beach. the child was playing on the beach in santa cruz. the sheriff reported a large log in the surf toppled her to the ground and landed on top of her. she was unconscious when passers-by lifted the log off the top of her. it was waterlogged and extremely heavy. the girl was flown to stanford where she later died. this was in oakland earlier today. heavy smoke bill lowing from a warehouse right alongside 880 near fruitvale avenue. a nearby school on east ninth street was briefly evacuated. well, the body of a man suspected of killing a sheriff's deputy and a locksmith has been recovered from the rubble of his burned-out apartment in modesto. police say the deputy was serving an eviction notice. his knock on the door was met with gunfire that killed him and the locksmith. a 12-hour standoff followed. police fired teargas and flash grenades into the building just before fire broke out at 9:00 last night. the deputy was a 16-year veteran of the department. officers should wear a camera all the time. that's the conclusion of an independent auditor looking into the san jose police department's practices. independent police auditor said in the heart of silicon valley, police should take advantage of cutting edge technology as a matter of protection. >> it's great because these cameras will document all of their activities and will certainly give the best explanation for what happens when there is some sort of an incident and everybody is weighing in and pointing fingers. there won't be any finger pointing if we have these cameras. >> cordell says the only issue is cost. she plans to investigate whether federal funds are available. she says the police chief and several councilmembers are enthusiastic supporters of the idea. san jose pd has been criticized by minority groups for practices like making people sit on curbs during just routine traffic stops. pg&e is paying up. today the utility paid the city of san bruno $7 million to help the community recover from that deadly blast in 2010. families are now rebuilding and some have already returned to the same site of the explosion that killed eight people and destroyed dozens of homes. san bruno's mayor says the money won't make up for the lives lost, but will be used for the greater good of the city. san bruno will now set up a non-profit to determine how to spend that money. it pays to be in menlo park. we're getting a first look at facebook's plans to shell out millions to the city. what the company dogs were sent here to see if they could detect her scent. now one month later, there are more questions than answers. divers went into the chilly waters today, hoping to find evidence that would lead them to sierra lamar. they pin pointed eight areas to investigate. >> we looked at thousands of images, and anything that we found on the floor of the reservoir here were -- that shouldn't be there, we're going to take a look at to determine whether or not it may be associated with the case. >> diving as deep as 40 feet, deputies rely solely on touch to investigate objects. 15-year-old sierra lamar was last seen four weeks ago today when her mom said goodbye to sierra in her bedroom before heading off to work. neighbor sydney flores says he can't believe sierra has been gone a month. >> you keep thinking, you know, she would be home by now, and then, you know, reality sinks in and it's not going to be that easy. i guess we're all praying for her. >> reporter: so far deputies have spent nearly 9,000 hours on the case and followed up on 1,400 tips. in addition, more than 3,000 volunteers have pitched in, scouring areas within a 20-mile radius of sierra's home and going door to door in south san jose neighborhoods, asking if homeowners have seen anything suspicious. despite diving deeper, the efforts have revealed very little about what happened to sierra lamar. deputies were out today on dirt bikes combing remote hillsides, and tomorrow volunteers will be out here again searching for sierra. reporting live in morgan hill, mary anne fabro, nbc bay area news. authorities are looking into the death of an 18-month-old child. it's procedure to look into the death of all young children. police were called to 2100 blk of mendota way. the child was rushed to a local hospital where the child was pronounced dead. officers have not released a cause of death or any information about the child. they say they're waiting for reports from the coroner's office. a sacramento student convicted of beating his roommate to death will serve time in a state mental facility. the victim's parents from santa klara say they're satisfied with the sentence. scott hawkins was found beaten to death in his dorm room two years ago. his roommate, lashawn jones, was diagnosed as suffering from dementia, making him legally insane. the judge ordered jones to serve time at a napa hospital, but if jones were ever found to be recovered from his insanity, he would be sent to a state prison for 18 years. he was found guilty of second-degree murder by state prosecutors. bart has more money to spend. more jobs and increased service as part of bart's budget. they're expecting a surplus of nearly $35 million for the next fiscal year. that's thanks in part to increased ridership and sales tax revenues. bart says it wants to use some of that money to expand service, they want to hire 60 workers and train workers. the bureau took a pounding. is it over? >> just about over. right now in napa county and out towards selano county which we'll show you on the radar. first let's look at the bay in san francisco. we're looking to the west. high pressure starting to build in. we'll see more clearing skies as you see there going through the weekend, but right now we have tropical low pressure moving to the east. we still have showers firing up right off to the east of highway 101 and also 82 there, around coyote and around evergreen. you're seeing just a few widely scattered light showers. but more substantial showers continue, even a little bit of thunder around areas east of napa. this is right to the east of the silverado trail and over towards wooden valley road. you can see that pretty intense cell there likely dropping some hail. notice where it's going, though, heading to vacaville to the south and east, and once the sun sets, we'll lose that power for these convection type showers. for the month of april, most of the bay area averages about an inch of rain for the month, so if you get to an inch and a half, you're just smashing records and we did most of that coming down yesterday evening. for the weekend, the trend will be warmer and dryer. as we get to sunday, maybe a lingering shower in some of the hill tops. i would say evergreen, los gatos might have a few showers in the afternoon, but you see the clearing and drying conditions during the day on saturday. some low 40s, maybe some upper 30s in the valley but not too chilly. 50s and mid-60s for your saturday. a full look at that forecast is coming your way in the next half hour. back face, lieutenant governor gavin newsom, but his tone and criticism of his boss is not familiar. no days, the former san francisco mayor has hay new approa -- a new approach and a new outlook on life. the images are countless. in many ways we've seen gavin newsom grow up right before our eyes. but perhaps his biggest growth has come away from the spotlight in the last year. >> do you miss being relevant on a daily basis? >> partially and partially not. i miss a bit of that, but at the same time, i don't miss getting booed when i walk into a movie theatre, and trust me, there were plenty of those examples when you're with your kids and somebody gives you the finger or something and you settle down. now i don't have to worry about that. >> this is gavin newsom 2.0. a little older, wiser and not afraid to attack his boss, governor jerry brown. >> my great critique of this administration is unprecedented higher ed. a 19-plus billion dollar budget shortfall. huge problems. every justification to do the same. he added close to $750 million to the ucnc system because he valued it. he prioritized it. >> do you tell governor brown cannotly what you just told me? >> i did. >> what's the response you get? >> you tell me exactly where the money comes from. i used to get that as mayor. i get that. it's a quick response, but with all due respect, i've been there on the executive side. not good enough. if we lose our system of higher learning, we have truly lost the california dream. >> it sounds like in many ways you're setting yourself to run for governor in 2014. would that be wrong? >> yeah, you would be. i hate the politicians that circumvent and question and sort of answer it loosely. i ran for governor momentarily against jerry brown and realized that i need to do pull back. so i think people know what my original intention was. that said, i want to make real this job as lieutenant governor. that's probably why i've been a little more honest and forthright than other lieutenant governors while i'm in office to say i want to do more and be more meaningful and purposeful. >> tell me how fatherhood has changed you. >> that's awesome. it's beyond awesome. it knocks you on your feet every single day. >> tell me what happens on saturday. >> saturdays in the morning, my daughter and i get bagels. all she talks about is bagel, bagel, bagel. it and you better get better, because life is about learning from your mistakes, and i'm a much better person and learned a lot from my mistakes. >> he also had a response to the current mayor scandal in san francisco and mayor lee is handling that situation. you'll find it on the nbcbayarea.com. kincaid is confirmed what some have been saying, that the painter of light was plagued by alcoholism. it may have contributed to his death one week ago today. the 54-year-old artist had been drinking all night and was not responsive. kin kade's brother, patrick, told the news that the painter's battle was filled with harsh criticism of his work and separation from his wife and daughter four years ago. the coroner is awaiting the work of the coroner's office before confirming kink arkkinkade's de. the sons of peter sucor said their father called the number listed for emergencies on the police web site on the night of february 18. but his call was simply not made a priority. sucor's sons say they want all emergency callers to be told what priority their call is being given as well as an approximate response time. they're also asking for dispatchers to receive additional training to more accurately assess emergency calls. >> my family and i have the utmost respect for the berkeley police men and women who risk their lives for our personal safety. what we take issue with is the system that constrains the way they are able to respond to citizens' calls for help. >> the berkeley police department has defended its actions saying it was only responding to emergency calls that night because it was monitoring an occupy march. the intruder, 23-year-old daniel dewitt, has been charged with murder but a judge has ruled him incompetent to stand trial. just today, dewitt was moved to a napa hospital. after a three-hour room by room search of a hotel near jacqueline square. they first spotted the suspect carrying a gun near the parking lot of the jacqueline i know. when they approached, he ran inside a hotel. swat teams found the 18-year-old outside a room trying to disguise himself by wearing women's clothing. police say he's wanted to alameda for assault and kidnapping. a woman who was with the suspect at the hotel was also taken into custody. a possible conflict of interest. the florida judge overseeing the second-degree murder case involving george zimmerman may be removed from the case. the judge said during a brief hearing today that her husband works with the attorney who referred zimmerman to his current representation. the judge asked prosecutors and defense attorneys to file motions with their views on the possible conflict before a bail hearing scheduled before next friday. zimmerman is currently in the county jail. >> it's going to be difficult for him to be able to walk down a street at any point in the foreseeable future. i just don't want him in jail because of that. i want him safe, but i need him available to me. >> zimmerman was arrested earlier this week for allegedly shooting unarmed teen trayvon martin to death on february 26. zimmerman claims it was self-defense and has pleaded not guilty. the formal arraignment is scheduled for may 29. a humbling hero with bay area ties. cory booker, the mayor of newark, new jersey, ran into a burning building last night to rescue his neighbor. booker, a former stanford football player, ran into the flames and carried the woman out on his shoulders. both booker and the woman went to the hospital. he denied he was a hero and spoke today about what went through his mind during the life-threatening rescue. >> honestly, at that point i did not feel bravery, i felt terror. it was a very scary moment because i couldn't find her. it looked like i couldn't get back through where i came from, and i couldn't breathe. >> the woman is in stable condition with second-degree burns. on a side note, cory booker is giving stanford's upcoming commencement speech in just a >> if someone else enjoys the photo, then i'm thrilled to hear that as well. >> in san francisco, scott budman, nbc bay area news. >> it almost looks digitally manipulated. >> yeah. but it's beautiful. good job on that photography. >> let's bring in rob mayeda. >> things are working great for weekend plans. last night we saw 750 lightning strikes around the bay area. we have some cool and breezy conditions outside. mostly 50s right now but the winds gusting around the east bay, winds around 26 miles per hour. gusty this evening. they may pick up more around sfo and san jose. around 9:00 tonight should see wind speeds start to back off and what's left of the showers should start to shut down. still some showers around morgan hill, moving to the south and east. more powerful showers have been flaring up out here towards napa county and selano counties this afternoon. you can see this cell approaching interstate 80 as you approach fairfield. some hail-producing cells that moved out south of rea vista approaching brentwood. the next 15 minutes as the cell weakens may toss some hail your way. but the trend, really, is the real action is moving to the south and east this hour. that trend will continue through the weekend. showers shutting down overnight, clearing skies. sunday, though, will be the warmer of the two weekend days. you can see the active weather moving off to the east. what's going to help us out in terms of clearing this out and eventually warming our temperatures is high pressure, which has been sitting on shore, is start to go gather itself and move toward the west coast. meanwhile, our active system is going to race to the central plains and cause a severe weather outbreak, especially in the southern plains this weekend. around bait area, though, just lingering showers in the hill tops, maybe in the santa cruz mountains and throughout the day we'll continue to see clearing skies, and the temperature is climbing on up by the time we get to sunday afternoon. mostly sunny skies for saturday, mostly warm conditions come sunday. low to mid-40s. t too chilly outside with tomorrow's highs. mid-60s, noticeably warmer. a little breezy at times saturday. obviously, sunday will be the warmer day. upper 60s around pleasanton. we'll see temperatures climbing. spring sunshine making a return with low 70s early next weekend for the first time, it seems like, in seven days we don't have raindrops, we don't have lightning bolts, we don't have snow. we did have snow in mt. hamilton, three inches of that. snow, rain, tornadoes, we don't have any of that. high pressure coming back, letting us dry out. but allergies. i think you're going to notice -- >> yes. we do. >> this grass and pollen is really going to kick up in the next several days. >> sometimes boring is good. >> for weekend plans. >> yes. let's look at sports. let's bring in henry wolfert hanging out with the jigiants a math cain and simpleal maze frg start to finish, had youh, henr?
