>> reporter: police say one of their officers spotted the suspect vehicle leaving the scene of the shooting, lost it, then spotted it again parked in front of another apartment complex about a mile and a half away from where the shooting happened. the car was empty so police surrounded the complex and eventually were able to arrest five suspects last night. police say they were also able to retrieve a handgun and also an assault weapon that may have been used in the shooting. the suspect, according to police, all have gang ties and range in age from 17 to 23. three of them are from morgan hill, one from san jose, another is from gilroy. police say they will have stepped-up patrols in the area since retaliation is a concern, since they believe the shooting was gang-related. in san francisco, three people are in the hospital tonight after a shoot-out in the mission district. police say they were called to 16 16th where they found three men shot. two of the victims ages 24 and 42 have life-threatening injuries. a 34-year-old man is at the hospital tonight recovering from less serious gunshot wounds. police are not releasing information about the gunman at this time but they are urging anyone with information to call the san francisco police department. today is bank transfer day. a movement that started on facebook and appears to be sweeping the nation. people across the country closed their accounts at the so-called big banks and moved their money into credit unions or local banks. at this point it's not clear really how many people participated. but nbc bay area's monty francis is in san francisco for us with a look. >> reporter: we just received word that three people were arrested at a wells fargo bank in santa rosa in connection with this protest. in oakland, one bank was forced to close down. and here in san francisco, protesters marched into several banks across town. >> banks got bailed out, we got sold out! >> reporter: protesters disrupted business at a wells fargo and bank of america and across the bay in oakland protesters marched and forced a wells fargo to close. cameras were there as bank security struggled to keep marchers from entering the building and forced to close due to an emergency. figures show that since september, at least 650,000 people have switched to credit unions. after b of a announced it would charge a $5 monthly debit card fee. the bank has since decided to cancel the fee. many immigrant rights protesters took part in today's protests to condemn wells fargo's ties to private companies that run immigrant detention centers. >> more and more people are coming out to hold banks accountable. defending their rights and staying in their homes and not being kicked out of their homes. this is only going to grow and we hope the next action is going to be twice as big. >> reporter: wells fargo issued a statement urging customers to take a look at what it does as a company and its record on charitable donations. organizers say bank transfer day is separate from the occupy movement but many protesters appear to be aligned with occupy wall street. it's estimated credit unions have added $4.5 billion in new savings accounts in the last two months. no hard figures on how many people closed their bank accounts today. many people whose homes are so-called under water financially in san francisco decided to protest today as well. >> banks got bailed out, we got sold out! >> the group marched to five different bank branches today and called on executives to make real changes. one, agree to reduce interest rates on their mortgages to competitive rates. two, modify loans by reducing principal in some cases. >> it seems like they got too much power. they're kind of taking things over. they're, you know -- they cater to the 1%. and i'm not 1%. >> the excelsior district in san francisco has the highest foreclosure rate in the city and the group targeted bank of america, wells fargo, citibank, chase, and u.s. bank. in oakland, while occupy demonstrators continue to rally in front of city hall, a different protest is under way. the protest comes on the anniversary of the sentencing of former bart police officer johan sister mehserle who served an 11-month prison sentence for shooting and killing oscar grant on a bart plat tomorrow in 2009. family and friends are using the anniversary to bring attention to disparity in sentences when it comes to race. >> if michael vick could be charged for dogfighting, not even murder but dogfighting, and be sentenced to four years, how is it that a man could murder another man, a man of color, and only get 11 months? in three years the bay area crab population has been big enough to open the season on time, great news for fishermen who are coming off another disappointing salmon season. potentially good news for consumers because the more crab harvested typically means the cheaper the price. as the holiday season approaching the need for food and clothing donations is on the rise. in san jose, many families lined up overnight to receive a donation voucher card from the sacred heart community service center on south first street. volunteers at sacred heart signed up more than 4,000 households today, including 6,000 children, all in need of food, clothing and toys for the holidays. they'll use the vouchers to receive donated goods. >> they lined up in front of our building starting at 3:30 in the afternoon yesterday. which we've never seen people doing that. over 15 hours before we actually opened our doors. and people started lining up and they were here wrapped around first and alma, floyd, sherman, all the way around the block just for the opportunity. >> sacred heart community service is asking for financial contributions, donated canned foods and turkeys throughout the holiday season. long-time tv news man and "60 minutes" commentator andy rooney died last night at the age of 92. rooney began his journalism career in the army writing for "stars and stripes" in london during world war ii. after the war rooney joined cbs as a writer before moving back into news. there is where the curmudgeon who ended each show with a tirade and viewers loved it. >> that's what's wrong with what's going on in washington. i don't know anything offhand that mist fys americans more than the cotton they put in pill bottles. why do they do it? there's no doubt about it, dogs are nicer than people. >> not all his comments were without controversy, though. in 1990, you might remember he was suspended after making what was considered by many to be an anti-gay statement. it was just last month, by the way, rooney signed off from "60 minutes" for the last time. right now we want to check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. he's a busy guy because it's raining and things are changing by the second. >> it was a cool afternoon. right now as mentioned we've got wind and rain moving around the bay area. i want to show you temperatures around the bay area. last weekend 70s and 80s. today couldn't find any 60s. mid 50s around santa rosa for a high. right now we're seeing 50s outside. one thing you're probably noticing is winds picking up. our cold front dropping out of the north bay. winds picking up out of the south and southeast 15 to 25 miles per hour. speaking of the rain, a pretty good swath of yellow and orange indicating downpours reaching from san francisco over to the east bay now. from oakland to san leandro. the north bay, this is the back edge of that cold front sweeping south through marin county. next 15 minutes out to the tri-valley, heavier rain move in from castro valley into dublin and livermore. san jose, probably a half hour before moderate rain dropping through the santa clara valley. on the coast, up and down highway run, you've got rain. some of that could be heavy at times from ben lomond, santa cruz, 7:00 to 9:00 this evening. cold air aloft which is cold enough to keep snow levels down, low enough to hit those mt. hamilton hilltops as we head into this evening and tonight. so rain at times changing to scattered showers. a reminder, we roll back the clocks an hour tonight to get that contract hour of sleep tomorrow morning. as you make up, isolated showers and a cool finish to the weekend, even with the extra sunshine. hour by hour forecasts. the computer models are right on. 9:00 this evening that cold front passes on through. notice the swiss cheese of showers, hit and miss into tomorrow morning. with cool air aloft, don't be surprised to hear small hail coming down tonight into tomorrow morning. as we head into sunday afternoon we'll continue to see lingering showers along the coastline and the hilltops. if those northwest winds, that's going to keep us chilly and eventually dry out our air and shut down the showers as we head into monday morning. lows eventually into 30s and 40s with skies clearing across the north bay. a very rainy evening especially with south bay. things improving as we make our way into tomorrow morning. as we wrap up the weekend, you saw today's highs to the going to budge much even with more sunshine tomorrow. it's going to be cool. highs close to 50 in san jose. low to mid
