Welcome back. Were on right now instead of nightly news because of the notre dame football game. And we begin this story with the i unit report. This is the founders of google and the its a keel deal that allows them to keep up to seven airplanes on public property there. Tonight the unit takes us inside the relationship and pieces together how much taxpayers are helping to pay for the founders of google to travel all over the world. Reporter its a common site at nasa aims. One of the airplanes belonging to googles founders, a boeing 727 that gave h 211 its name. H 211s principals are larry page and eric smith, the same three principals at google. According to records obtained by the bay area, the 757 for years use tax paid jet fuel to fly around the world. September 22nd, 2009, records show the plane gassed up at moffitt field before playing to puerto vie yar that, mexico. They paid for 218 gallons of jet fuel. It costs 5 dollars to 8. 50 a gallon at local airplanes. Then there was the report in 2010 to costa rico, paying 3. 27 a gallon. This may have been the great es sweet heart deal. This is giving the keys to the nasa gas station to executives to clearly are not using it for scientific purposes when their contract spells out thats what they have to do. In fact, the original agreement first signed in 2007 stipulates that googles founders could house the airplanes at moffitt paying 109,000 in rent. In exchange, h 211 would allow nasa to use the planes for scientific missions. The agreement does not set a number of scientific flights but our investigation last year showed that out of more than 1,000 flights, only 155 of them were actually for science. Its outrageous. It boggles the mind. And these fuel records show 1200 different times h 211 bought fuel out at nasa aims totaling 7. 9 million. They should give that money back with interest and if there was an intentional attempt to mislead the government, i think it rises to the level of a false claim against the government. Well i hoped obviously to get to the truth. Paul runs a nonprofit air logistics based in palo alto. Hes been denied permission to put their business at moffitt fuel. We independently verified the records accuracy with feed rale officials. It confirms there was definitely pref renl treatment going on. Take this airplane, a 767, records show it flew to paris, cancun, switzerland twice and tahiti three times. Its been fueled 100 different times for a total of 442,000 gallons of fuels, or these gulf streams, gassed up 404 times with 919,000 gallons of fuel. Airplanes that records show flew to hawaii, scotland, st. Martin and niece, france. So this whole investigation is something that smells to begin with and we want to get to the bottom of it. The senator first saw or investigation of this arrangement a year ago. What bothers me the most is that it implies theres a favoritism going on. That would be wrong. And it implies that theres a waste of taxpayers money. While she wouldnt answer questions on camera, the division chief emailed a statement that read in part, quote, nasa is always looking for innovative Public Partnerships and quote, there is no agency on moffitt federal airfield other than the Defense Logistics Agency from which to obtain fuel. As for google a spokesman referred to h 211s president who declined an offer to go on camera but ent us a statement that read, h 211 aircraft buy only the fuel available at moffitt and we play full retail for hang gar spice. The helicopter owned by ambrose was refueled 138 times at moffitt fuel. Then theres this. We do not have any discretion as long as those plains are domiciled in what can called a federal enclave. Thats the assess for Santa Clara County who sends out the local tax bill for all property taxes. What hes saying is that h 211 and googles founders pay no county taxes on any of those airplanes because the planes sit at a federal facility. Is that fair, this arrangement . Its the law. I mean i dont know if its fair or not. I think that if somebody has their plane in within the federal enclave at moffitt field and theyre not paying property tax, with the same plane 0 located at san jose airport would be paying a property tax, no thats not fair. Is h 211 getting an unfair advantage . This correct me if im wrong woman represents moffitt field. I asked her about the relationship between nasa and h 211. People in the community that care the most about what happens at the airfield have signed off on this. Why . Because they are a partner with nasa aims in terms of research. Her staff said he was too busy to answer or questions on camera this time. I think this is something that is celebrated in my congressional district. This is not a favor in any way shape or form. That was Stephen Stock from the i team. During his investigation, the Defense Department announced it would no longer sell jet fuel to h 211. The practice is set to send august 31st and representative sent us an emails says she now supports the independenter generals aught audit into the report. The event was at the oakland coliseum. Organizer say while some people think its just a shoe give away, its much more than that. Its important because we believe children feel better when they have a new pair of shoes on their feet, especially when they go to school. It enhances their ability to learn because theyre not selfconscious about what their shoes were looking like. They feel good about the fact that theyve got a new pair of shoes own and can sit comfortably and do what theyre in school to do. Over the past 16 years organizers have distributed almost 8,000 shoes and gift cards to students in alameda county. Their goal is to have twice as many shoes to give away next year.
