Houses all day long. As strong winds blew into the south bay, tree cutters were kept busy. Weve seen a lot of trees fall. Reporter this palm tree on 11th ripped into a house. It was hollowed out by bees before the storm hit. You know that, tree has had bees inside. So you can see the beehive. It rotted out. Its been weak for years and the wind was just so strong today it, gave out. Reporter while people and pets were spared injury here, this tree a few blocks away took down power lines, pg e taped off access to the house. Just a loud noise. Just a loud noise. But a lot of strong wind and then of course, you know, we could hear the trees just blowing in the wind. Reporter all right. The good news is, no reported injuries from the downed trees here in san jose thus far. However, tree cutters and pg e crews tell us they will likely be busy into the evening. You can see the car in there. Might even be a pickup truck and a house. This landed across the street. You saw the sidewalk. Thankfully, no injuries. This storm has caused a lot of power outages, many in the south bay. Pg e is hampered by the wind. In many cases they cant use the basket trucks to access the poles because the winds make it too dangerous. Robert honda continues coverage in morgan hill. Whats the latest . Reporter well, we are in the midst of some of the scariest scenes for home owners especially during the storm. Look right above me there and you can see where the top part of a power pole that snapped right off when wind tugged hard on the lines and then things got worse. The wind and rain knocked down trees all over town. When trees started falling on del mon tid avenue this morning, they fell on top of power poles which pulled down power and telephone lines making some lines droop. The domino effect caused a power out and in the neighborhood including. Shops downtown and partial outage at britain middle school where some classes went dark and students evacuated to the gym. Emergency crews were glad the battered power poles only led toe outage. We had sparks coming from the transformers and caught one of the roofs on fire. Reporter crews put out the flames quickly. Pg e turned off area gas and electricity. Parents we talked to who came to get their children from the dark school, to see the cause was frightening. Its kind of scary. Ive never seen nothing like this before especially all this wind. Its quite freaky. Its scary. Reporter now, i just talked to pg e. And they say there were about ,000 people here in morgan hill who lost power and pg e just told me that they plan to bring in extra crews to try to help some of the overwhelmed workers here in the south bay. Officials say delays could get even longer as the night goes on. At oakland airport, there are about ten cancellations many associated with flights to and from california. No word on the travel impact at sjc. Not clear if the weather was a factor in this deadly crash. The driver was killed when his car plunged into an estuary near the oakland airport. It landed in the water upside down around 8 00 this morning. No word on the drivers identity. A similar crash happened in the same area in january when a san leandro cab driver died after crashing into the estuary. Some tricky conditions on roads all across northern california. Calling on the National Guard to round up immigrants would be unprecedented but our unit found past president s have activated the guard for domestic issue. Nbc bay areas Jody Hernandez joins us near the damaged spillway. Whats the official word . Reporter ran, we have seen some notable changes out here today. First of all, it is raining as you can see. Secondly, the department of Water Resources has reduced the flow quite dramatically coming off that spillway. Theres a lot less water coming down today. We have also noticed streams of water flowing down the sides of this spill way. We are told all of this is being closely watched but so far the situation remains stable. Were really working in the right direction to reduce these risks to this community and those down stream. Reporter crews began the dangerous task of removing debris from the bottom of the damaged oroville spillway. The department of Water Resources continues to reduce the flow to allow work down below and to make room in the reservoir for the rain the storms are bringing in. We still have a lot of room where the water could be absorbed into the reservoir. Reporter today a fairly large stream of muddy water began flowing alongside the spillway. Experts are closely watching it for signs of trouble. Were looking to see if the water is digging into the side of the mountain or creating further erosion in our spillway. The things that were dealing with are very serious and thats why ive continued to say time and time again this is still an emergency situation. Reporter folks in town are incredibly nervous. Im doing a lot of praying. Were praying. A lot of people are preparing. A lot of people are preparing to just go. You must have a lot of trust in your government, okay . Thats what this is all based on to me. It comes down to this. You trust your government and what theyre doing up there . Were back here live where youre looking at the spillway. Again, the flow has been reduced dramatically. Its down to 70,000 cubic feet a second. We are told theyre going to bring it down even more tomorrow to make room in the reservoir for all the rain coming in and an also to allow workers to get down to the river to do needed critical work down there. Its amazing to see all the water coming off and off the sides, too. You have to think the officials will be very concerned about mondays forecast. Thats when the strongest storm is expected to move in. They could have another 2 to 4 inch of rainfall right up there where jody is reporting. Great reporting, jodi. Thank you so much for the details. What were seeing right now, we have our storm system lingering a little bit more than expected. Thats why the rainfall has stayed into the afternoon hours. And with it, pretty much parallel to monterrey, the counterclockwise circulation around there is helping to spin up the moisture from the south. Thats why account Santa Cruz Mountains and san jose got first. This begin to weaken by tomorrow morning. Thats when we see the rainfall taper off. The highest flooding threat is right where we have storm ranger positioned down here into Southern California from san diego into los angeles, 24hour rain totals, two to three inches. This will be the spot to watch for tonight. Back up here throughout the bay area, we have heavy rainfall weve been contending with. The bulk of it is now starting to move up into the peninsula, also the north bay. Im going to track that in a second. What i want you to note is were probably still under another three hours of this weather continuing across the bay area. You can see how much is here off towards the south.
