Right now at 5 00, breaking news in the east bay where a car is submerged in a creek and the 18yearold driver still hasnt been found. News at 5 00 starts right now. Im terry mcsweeney. Im peggy bunker. Were following breaking news in the east bay tonight where a search and rescue effort is under way after a car went into the alameda creek. Marianne favro live near the scene with the latest on the effort to get the car out of the water and the search for that driver. Reporter terry, around 11 30 yesterday morning a woman crashed her car here into alameda creek. At that time yesterday rescue crews were not able to find her car and the 18yearold woman who was driving it is still missing. If you look at how rapidly the water is moving right now and the unpredictable current, First Responders simply can go in there to search for her because its too dangerous. In addition, there is a mud slide that has shut down niles canyon road, and that is also hampering any rescue efforts. The Sheriffs Department is also working with the state Water Resource Agency to reduce the amount of water flowing into this creek, but until its safe, here at alameda creek, First Responders say they simply cannot go. But they tell me that they are hoping to send in dive teams as soon as the conditions here improve. Reporting live in niles, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Marianne, very sad story there. The storm causing a lot of problems. It is picking up strength right now. Lets take you out live. This is a look from our tower camera in dublin. We do have Team Coverage for you. Lets start with kari hall tracking this path. What about thunderstorms . We still have that chance of thunderstorms. But a lot of that activity has shifted off to the east. A lot of lightning bolts being detected by our radar after this storm moved east of the bay area. And were still seeing some pockets of some heavy rain mostly over the south bay over towards the Santa Cruz Mountains where rainfall rates have been coming down at a rate of half an inch of rain per hour and we have had this rain coming down for at least two hours now. As you head over to pleasanton, livermore, still pouring and the rainfall rates a little bit lighter there. Also not as intense with a steady rain from San Francisco extending over toward oakland and also for the delta where you may be hearing some claps of thunder but that storm is just to the east of you. And were seeing lighter rain for parts of the north bay. This activity will continue to wind down. We will talk about how high those rivers and creeks are. Also the reservoirs, theyre coming up, and thats coming up in the micro climate forecast a little bit later. Terry . Kari, thank you very much. Another round of heavy rain coming down in the north bay where the ground is already saturated. The highway may not be opening any time soon. Christie smith live along the closed highway. I see it right there behind you, the flooding. Reporter yeah, thats right, terry, one look at this and you can see why highway 37 is closed again near 101. And it is raining again. Has been for over an hour. Now, there will be efforts to get all this water out of here, but i have to tell you right now its just sat rurated in all directions. The marshland is saturated. Theres so much water from these storms. You can see theres actually a car partially submerged out there. The chp says that the driver was actually unable to make it through and needed rescuing but is uninjured. The closure was about to go up, were toll, when that driver got caught in the rising water early this morning. Officers had been monitoring it. Now, once again, this is 37 right near 101. It is closed. It was closed before and its unclear, they say, exactly when it might reopen. As of right now, it appears that this closure is going to be in place for at least a couple of days if not longer. Last time when this happened we saw that it took us approximately a week to get all of this water out of there. It was really, really like, yeah, pounding is a good word. Theres a lot of it, really loud, really big drops. Just a lot of it. I didnt realize it was going to flood so badly, though. Reporter that woman you just heard from there, she was not on highway 37. We actually caught up with her trying to get around another flooded area in sonoma near highway 121 and 12. But what shes saying is at the north bay where she lives has been hit hard with this series of storms. Now back near 37, the detours the are up at 101 and from the other direction, but again you can see what were dealing with and it may take some time to get all this water out of here. Reporting live near novato, christie smith, nbc bay area news. Thank you very much. Certainly causing problems like that. Also wreaking ha ining havoc ont as well. Take a look at Half Moon Bay where restaurants had to contend with pounding waves. Some even have a lot of damage. I recorded the waves. And i got a huge one that hit the front of the restaurant and damaged all the garden. Take a look at this tree. It came down on a house filled with people punching right through the roof. In pacifica, aggressive waves there flowed into the streets. Many will spend time cleaning up for all the mess the storm has left behind. The area burned by the loma fire last summer is being hit especially hard by this storm. The conditions are so bad in that area the National Weather service warned of possible lifethreatening situations because of flowing debris and it is not over yet. Nbc bay area Laura Malpert joining us live from gilroy with the very latest. We wanted to go hiking today and see the waterfalls. But its coming down pretty hard. All right, looks like we have technical issues there with Laura Malpert. In the meantime, the storm brought a mess to the Santa Cruz Mountains. Take a look at what drivers had to contend with here. Lots of downed trees navigating around four separate mud slides this morning. Take a look at this big rig here. As Chuck Coppola tells us this mud slide here hit that big rig and also closed traffic on highway 17 for more than two hours. A mud slide barreled on to highway 17 in front of 41yearold roy trevino driving a big rig to stockton at 7 00 a. M. On sunday. I saw all that coming into my truck. I pushed the brake and went to the ground. Reporter you ran into the mud slide. Yeah. Reporter he wasnt injured but it took two hours to clean up one lane. Two more happened on the southbound lane. We were among the first to see one near redwood estates. The tree slid and landed upright as it if had been planted there. Another tree south of the summit kept crews busy into the afternoon. A slide near redwoods state park closed highway 9 between santa cruz and felton. Highway 17 saw a debris slide into the fence caltrans crews put up just last tuesday. In Los Gatos Matt Wyman brought his two daughters to see the spillway at lechington gushing. This reminds me when i was a kid probably a little older than my daughter here, 1986, i lived in the Santa Cruz Mountains and we had huge storms. Reporter Los Gatos Creek trail look more like a path for kayaks. This is about as controlled as you can manage it. It was up over capacity. This is as full as ive ever seen this stream. Reporter the bench along the trail said discover water. Thanks. Weve done that. Chuck coppola, nbc bay area news. We continue to get a unique look at the Stormy Weather from you, our viewers. Take a look at some of the pictures that have been sent in. Pye ramirez sent a picture of a fountain that has rain water sitting in it. Before this weekend that fountain was empty. Genaro vargas took this picture of crews cleaning up a tree in san pablo. And isra ahmad shows a downed tree in milpitas that just barely missed cars in a driveway. Send us your videos, your photos. Well be speaking with Governor Scott right after this. And well be alabamas a special place, florida a special place, but they got hit hard. The governor of georgia has declared a state of emergency in seven counties. Were having a lot of our own weather here. I understand were not quite through with it just yet. No, well see some breaks in between. But there still will be some waves of rain moving through. And well be watching for this as we go into tonight as well as off and on all day tomorrow. As we take a live look outside at san jose, still some rain coming down, but it has gotten lighter. And heres a view from Half Moon Bay. It is looking nice after dealing with some very heavy rain. Were still seeing those clouds in the distance. In San Francisco, a bit of a break here as well with some lighter rain, but still temperatures are very chilly so you have to bundle up along with packing around the umbrella and the rain boots after wave after waves of rain moving through the bay area. Some of that rain now the bright reds and the yellows still over the south bay at this point. And it is moving off towards the north and east in los gatos right now, still some rain that will be streaming into san jose and then well start to see this activity tapering off from west to east. Looking at the trivalley now, a steady downpour from pleasanton to livermore and then heading up toward alamo and San Francisco seeing the lighter showers there that will be moving closer to oakland within the next few minutes into the delta and antioch right now, brentwood, youre seeing some heavy rain that will be getting lighter after about 30 or 40 more minutes and in pretty widespread light rain for the north bay as we see those areas creeks and rivers rising over the past couple of days, weve had several inches of rain and theres still more on the way. Weve also had a lot of lightning strikes, some cloudtoground lightning. Once those storms move east of the bay area. And they were also just off shore. We still have a lot of this energy that will be working through the bay area and the potential of some more lightning, especially as they initially move on shore. Along the coastline as we go through today. If youre following me on facebook and twitter, ive been tweeting about this and hopefully youve been sending me some reports and well share that information as weve been dealing with a couple of days of some very heavy rain and this is the third storm in that series of three. So after this well start to get a little bit more of a break. Still at midnight some heavy rain may be pounding on the roof in parts of the north bay and still some rain rolling through early tomorrow morning. There will be a few more breaks, but a chance of some thunder and lightning. Some gusty winds and once we get those cells with some very heavy rain, we may also have the flooding threat lifted once again into Tuesday Morning finally we start to get some drier air moving in, but it will also be very chilly. Additional rainfall totals maybe a half of an inch. But reservoirs are full all across the bay area. At least 85 at Almaden Reservoir and were seeing the river levels and Guadalupe River that will be rising and cress g i cresting over the next couple of days. Back to you, terry and becky. Becky . One local Police Officers love of music brings him closer to the community that he serves. And the public has been strained lately. Across much of america the relationship between police and the public has been strained lately. In san mateo we found a Police Officer who has taken matters into his own hands to try to make things better for the community. We have his story in tonights bay area proud. I put through the report. Walking the beat downtown is unlike any other assignment in the San Mateo Police department. There are days when its just as much Public Relations as police work. Which is why it seems to be the perfect fit for colby dara and the type of cop he always wanted to be. Like i want people to feel completely comfortable to come up to me and ask me questions and to vent off their problems. Reporter in his effort to do just that, colby isnt afraid to try new techniques but a couple of months ago he discovered something old was just what he was looking for. His love of music. Its kind of always been a part of my life. My parents owned and operated their own business and i would go on the weekends with my dad on house calls. And we were just listening to country music. Sometimes wed have a long drive and be sitting there windows down singing country western music. Reporter colby continued singing as a teenager, even won a few competitions. But when his focus turned toward a career in Law Enforcement and raising a family, music kind of faded into the background. But not all the way. Oh, yeah, i hum or whistle. Sometimes i sing. Reporter but what he did one night in november brought it back in a whole new way. He spotted a street musician, a regular downtown, and walked up to him. I asked him, do you mind if i play your guitar . Reporter his partner, you see, snuck a video of the performance and colby says it seems like everyone in town has seen it. Its become just the ice breaker colby says hes always been looking for. And now plans to regularly break out in song and perhaps break down some barriers in the process.
