I spoke briefly with one clerk at a Clothing Store off camera. He said it hasnt affected his business because he thinks that the thieves are not looking for what he sells. The thefts occurred at apple when the stars are open. A small group runs in, snatch as much as they can, and carry it out. Form, though, no one has been hurt. Theyre not there for very long. Its a property crime focused theft. We know what theyre there for. We are working with apple as well as the Business District on Fourth Street to see what we can do to stem that type of crime. Investigators say they are working with other agencies to see if there is a pattern related to these crimes. One shopper told me it is a concern but overall feels safe here. It could be a new test on an old scam. Good evening. Our mailboxes are stuffed this time of year. First the election flyers, now the holiday flyers on top of every day junk mail. If your mailbox is suddenly empty, your reactions might be relief, but it shouldnt be. A thief might be stealing your identity. A woman had an empty mailbox and says it was a warning for everyone. Confirming an application she hadnt submitted. You applied for a credit card. Then a suspiciously empty mailbox. Well, i hadnt gotten mail for a while. Represent ney suggested the two were connected and someone was tampering with her identity. This is not a small thing. Its a big thing. Its fraud. A call to the local post office connected the dots. They said you put a hold on it. I had i did not. The post office produced this hold mail request. That persons intent was clear to renee. The thief applied for a credit card using her name, held her mail until the card would arrive, then planned to pick up the mail at the post office where the soontobe stolen credit card would be collected. Theyre allow fraud to happen. She was shocked by the post office lack of security. We were also surprised how easy it is. Anyone can logon to the usps website, hold your mail, then go pick it up. You dont grant permission, you dont have a clue until youre a victim. What happened is a federal crime. A postal inspector, a federal agent who investigates postal crime. People across the country are duped by the same scam. He said he has warned the post master general that the mail hold feature needs tighter security. We work with the Main Post Office assessing security and looking at what can be upgraded or whats going on, what can be tightened up. So what is the post master general to prevent this particular flavor of fraud . Nothing yet. In a statement they acknowledged instances taking place using mail hold and said it regrets the in convenience. They said they are working on Viable Solutions to prevent and reduce fraud via online mail hold. Renee says that response isnt good enough. Increased security is needed now. One possible solution is simple. That they verify that the person who put the mail on hold had the home owners approval to do it. When you move and submit an address change through the Postal Service website, security measures confirm it is generally you requesting the change. That tells us stricter security is possible. Its just not a step the Postal Service has taken when you hold your mail. Jeff fitch, the postal inspector, pointed out keeping an eye on your mail.
