I obviously dont consider myself a hero. You know, mark is a hero. Reporter he first noticed him trying to protect his three daughters. He said, what do you guys do if a big wave comes . Reporter the hawaiian man was at the tide pools in oahu on saturday with his fiancee. I just took a bunch of pictures of her. A palo alto fire station covering a high fire danger area of the foothills is closed, and its about to get real hot this weekend. The station in foothill park received a few calls last year. Is it still needed . Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro joining us live with a look at, of course, a controversial closure. Reporter well, terry, you can see here that the gate is closed and station eight just at the top of the hill here. It opened in 1984, but now the Palo Alto Fire Department says unless theres a red flag warning, it wont be staffed this summer. Reporter known for sweeping views of the peninsula, the area surrounding Foothills Park is also tinder dry. Right now, the park is in high fire danger. But on july 1st, the Palo Alto Fire Department stopped staffing fire station eight at the park. A station assigned to protect an area with 160 homes. For years, two or three firefighters worked here during fire season. But palo alto fire chief eric nichols says last year, the station only responded to ten calls. But we decided that we would probably be a better use of taxpayers dollars to handle more of the calls down here in the valley. Versus staffing that station up there during fire season. Reporter but the president of the Union Representing palo alto firefighters says closing the station will put the community at risk. This station, although its low frequency, as call volumes, its high risk potential. The droughts have caused the brush to be thick and dry. Its hard getting access in and out of the foothills. The occasional road is pretty much the only way up and down. If something were to happen, it could be catastrophic. Reporter chief nichols says thanks to agreements with Santa Clara CountyFire Department and other agencies, residents in the foothills will still be protected and response times should not change. But homeowners we talked to offcamera say theyre not convinced. They say they felt safer knowing help was less than a mile away. Reporter the fire chief says by closing this station, the city will save about 300,000. Thats money that will go to eventually buying another department ambulance. Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. All right, marianne, thanks a lot. And get ready for some heat. We were talking about it. About 24 hours earlier, a similar attack happened on the campus of uc berkeley. A student there says he was simply sitting outside the International House when a man started shooting at him with a bb gun. It is unclear if the suspects are the same from both attacks. Hes accused of threatening San Franciscos acting police chief, tony chaplin. Now hes in jail. Police say donald hogginson called for the beheading of the chief ton twitter. Always new things come up that needs to be fixed. Reporter but getting everything dones been a challenge. B. A. R. T. s got a shortage of engineers. The ones that are the most difficult to fill so far have been traction power, system integration, computer engineering. Reporter b. A. R. T. Says 50 of its engineering staff are eligible to retire. They currently have 62 openings that need to be filled by november. But attracting qualified candidates hasnt been easy. Part of its because we live in the bay area and were competing with tech giants that are willing to pay a lot more for Computer System skills. Reporter but engineers we talked to say the jobs highly rewarding. They say working on new technology that helps the bay area keep moving is exhilarating. So we do like color blinds for the eta messages, countdown timers for how long the train will be at the station, things like that. Reporter now, b. A. R. T. s board of directors recently approved hiring recruiting agencies to help with the hiring. Well, theyre going to be focusing on finding candidates in california, theyre also going to be looking across the country, even internationally. Its not a distinction to be proud of. Bay area restaurants have the largest racial pay gap in the country, thats according to a Nonprofit Group that advocates on behalf of restaurant workers. It says employees of color at fine dining restaurants across the bay area are paid 6 less than white workers per hour. It also found a gender gap.
