Down a man. That man rammed his car into dozens of other cars including police cars. Our nbc chopper was overhead. This started in oakland and ended next door in berkeley. Reporter raj, police are trying to figure out what prompted the berkeley man to go on a wild and dangerous drive this morning. They say the amount of damage that he caused before they caught him was monumental. This is a mass scene that stretches from east oakland all the way in to the city of berkeley. So thats a lot of roadway. Reporter police say an armed and reckless driver began ramming into cars at about 8 30 this morning leading police on a chase through the streets of oakland where investigators say he hit police cars and even a car driven by a pregnant woman. He would look at the driver and intentionally drive his vehicle into that persons car. Additionally, he would point a firearm at them. Reporter a chp tracked the mans route as he drove into berkeley where he hit more cars. He was coming down this street pretty hard. Reporter this uber driver had just picked up a client when the suspect slammed into his brandnew chevy. Crazy. I could have been getting out of the car when he hit me. Reporter the suspect ended up ditching his car and taking off on foot, but police managed to arrest him after firing a foam bullet at the man. We all got to Work Together to try to figure out exactly why he was doing this and what reasons, what led up to this. Reporter investigators have been canvassing the area looking for the suspects gun but so far no luck. Now, police have not released the identity of the suspect but we have tracked down some interesting information on the registered owner of the car involved. Well have that for you tonight at 6 00. Reporter the Sheriffs Office is not denying the allegations of abuse at the womens Detention Center in milpitas, but this incident happened months ago and the investigation is still ongoing. This is where most women are housed in Santa Clara County. The backside of the elmwood jail. Sources tell me this is also where two female correctional deputies allegedly beat up a female inmate last summer. My sources say when another correctional deputy approached the scene, two guards told her to go away. Today the Sheriffs Office released a statement saying, quote, the Sheriffs Office is aware of the allegations and were conducting an investigation. The allegations come as the jail system tries to recover from other abuse allegations against inmates including the death of Michael Tyree in august. Three jail guards face homicide charges in that case. Today judge cornell who chairs a panel looking into the practices and procedures inside the jail system said, it is my belief that we have important recommendations to give the county and the sheriff about how to improve the jail system. Caltrans could be going electric. The money to help make that happen is included in the president s 4 trillion Budget Proposal to congress. The president is asking that 125 million of it go to switching caltrain from a diesel system to an electric one. It would mean new trains, new cars, and new railways. The project would allow caltrain to run more cars each day because the switch means less pollution going into the air. However, the project is far from paid for. The best advice would be to stay out of the water, and if youre headed to the surf competition, there will be great viewing locations right near pillar point. The chance for that spotty drizzle friday and saturday, namely the best bet would be into the north bay. Then after that, late february into march, our chances of rainfall are definitely conti e continuing to increase. Heres how we see it today for any possible rainfall. By next week the 18th and the 19th a chance of showers, but a better chance of rainfall february 23rd and then 25th. And it still looks like march holds the best chance of some above average rainfall coming our way.
