You can see for yourself in this video provided by the Contra Costa County sheriffs department. Watch suspects on the ground point a bright green light at one of its helicopters. Not once, but several times. This is just one of the most recent local cases in a troubling trend nationwide. And speaking to ian gregor from the faa, we found california has the highest rate of laser strikes in the country. I think thats because we have the greatest population of any state. Many majorirports in urban areas, and we have great weather where people are outside most of the year. The number of strikes has nearly doubled since 2013. Going from 3,961 to 6,182 nationally. He says its a serious problem. The laser can at the least distract the pilot, especially during the critical landing or takeoff phase of flight, and at worst, it can cause temporary visual problems. And deputies did arrest those suspects involved in that incident you just saw. If you would like to watch more of it, you can go to our website, nbcbayarea. Com. Coming up, a new piece of technology aimed at making south bay neighborhoods safer and smarter. Plus, despite what hes wearing, police say this man is not a police officer. His suspicious behavior in a peninsula Grocery Store that has the real police anxious to track him down. Last wednesdays shooting by police of a man in the bay view has chief greg suhr asking for tasers. Why the Police Commission might say yes this time around. Well have the story coming up. Great change comes from doing the right thing. Like the radical idea that health isnt an industry. Its a cause. So we do things differently. We combine care and coverage. And believe prevention is the most powerful of cures. So forgive us for not going with the flow. We just think the flow should go with us. Which makes us rebels with one cause. Your health. Arm his officers with tazers. The chief, the mayor and the Police Commission sat San Franciscos police chief is pushing again to arm his Police Officers with tasers. The mayor and the Police Commission sat down to discuss the option. All this after five officers oipenned fire last week on a man holding a knife. Nbc bay areas Mark Matthews is live in San Francisco where a meeting organized by the naacp will get under way in about 45 minutes. Mark, greg suhr has been pushing for tasers for a while. He has. Twice in the last five years. But the requests were turned down by the Police Commission. However, the department has made changes since the last request, and last wednesdays shooting has spurred a renewed look at nonlethal force. This is the closest video of the moments just before mario woods was shot. An officer moves to block his path, and then fires just as the camera swings away, four more officers fire. I saw the video. I found it very upsetting, as many did. Today, mayor ed lee told reporters there are three investigations under way and no conclusions reached yet. But the department is going to equip officers with body shields to use against a suspect with a knife. And the chief made a point of talking about the weekend knife attack in londons subway, where a suspect was subdued with a stun gun. I certainly believe that we had had a taser in this situation, i think it would have ended much like it did in london on saturday. I dont think you would be standing here talking to me, but again, we dont have them. Suzy loftus is president of the Police Commission which has previously denied the chiefs requests for tasers. I have had lingering concerns about taser, but im open to, like i said now, we now have a department with a lot more officers crisis intervention trained and now well have body cameras. We should have a conversation. Tonights meeting here at the Third Baptist Church is set to begin at 6 00. We asked pastor amos brown what he thought of the shields and taser idea. Coming up at 6 00, well tell you why he says this isnt about police equipment. In San Francisco, mark matthema, nbc bay area news. Thank you, mark. Just in to our newsroom, take a good look. This man may look like one, but hes not a real cop. Safeway employees at the Crystal Springs Shopping Center in san mateo said he showed up late last month dressed as a San Mateo Police officer. Whether bicyclists should stop at stop signs is up for debate. It has sharply divided city hall, with supersupervisors pitted against the mayor. Members of the Transportation Committee say cyclists shouldnt have to stop completely and are expected to move the issue forward. The suspense is whether theyre going to muster enough votes to override the mayors veto. I think this is the right direction. Our streets are too crowded. Anything we can do to get more people out of their cars, onto a bike, its better for everyone. Mayor ed lee has argued letting cyclists yield at stop signs would compromise the safety of pedestrians, especially the elderly and disabled. Some south bay neighborhoods are about to get safer and more hightech thanks to a new set of light poles. Our business and tech reporter scott budman is live in san jose right below one of the smart poles to explain what it does. Well, they are called smart poles. And while theyre in short supply now, the city of san jose has planned to put them into many neighborhoods around the city. Theyre quite different from the typical light pole you see around town. They have cleaner led lighting to cukut down on pollution. They look different, and the goal is to make low income neighborhoods safer. Smart poles enable us not just to make our neighborhoods safer, but also to reduce our Greenhouse Gas emissions with more environmentally sensitive l. L. E. D. Lights. One more thing the smart poles also have high Speed Wireless Technology inside, part of a deal worked out between san jose and the companies eriksson and philips to bring Internet Access into those neighborhoods. Its also because of the deal that there will be no cost to san jose taxpayers. The city has plans to expand into many other neighborhoods. Scott budman, nbc bay area news. Thank you, scott. Okay, well, jeff ranieri is off, but weve got kari hall from today in the bay. Thanks for joining us. How does it look . Its looking all right now. But were tracking this big storm system that will be here later in the week. If you didnt get enough rain this morning, dont worry. Well all get in on the action by wednesday and thursday. What to expect tonight, the clouds stay with us and patchy dense fog that may affect the morning commute, and the end to the day tomorrow, mild with peaks of sunshine. It feels so nice outside. Were still looking at highs in the 60s, and then as we head into wednesday, a storm system approaches with some wind and some rain. So ill detail that. Looking out there now, its in the mid to upper 50s, and the cloudy skies staying with us after an Early Morning light rain. Tomorrow, were heading into the upper 50s to lower 60s. 57 in San Francisco. But now, were at 57 degrees there as well as san carlos, and san jose at 60 degrees and livermore at 59, and heading into the day tomorrow, once again looking at some low 60s after seeing those nighttime temperatures dipping down to about 50 degrees. Heres the next storm system, as we look at it on the satellite, the last frame kind of going out there, but you can see how large this system is. And so far, we have seen just some showers farb to the north. As we go to the next couple days, this gets closer and the first round of rain arrives in the north bay on wednesday. And then the second round looks to bring an allday rain, all across the bay area, and it will be very heavy with some gusty winds. The forecast models at this point, now that were a few days out, are getting a better idea of the timing and once again for the north bay, it starts on wednesday and then the rest of us seeing this as we go into the day on thursday. The jet stream lining up right over the bay area. That will carry that system into our region. So this is what it will look like as we head into the future cast. The next couple days, it will be dry. Well still have clouds overhead. Here we are tomorrow evening, and do still see the cloudy skies. Then the rain starts to move into the north bay by wednesday morning. And it looks like it doesnt get into the rest of the bay area until early thursday morning, and thats also when the rain will be heaviest, really starting to pour on those north bay hills and into the day on thursday, the radar is just pretty much covered. Early idea of how much rain we could see, the possibility of anywhere from a quarter of an inch to up close to maybe 2 inches for the north bay. So well be watching that, a few spots may be getting very high amounts, especially in the hills and the higher elevations. And looking at the sierra, what they could see, over a foot of snow, and south lake tahoe, maybe 17 inches. This looks to be a significant system well be tracking as we head into the next couple days. Thank you very much.
