An suv came crashing the to a home last night hitting a woman asleep in her bed. Tonight, we have learned that woman had recently gotten engaged and was looking forward to her Engagement Party next week. Jodi hernandez is live in san leandro where the woman is fighting for her life tonight. You also spoke to the victims family friend. Thats right. He tells me that the victim was enjoying one of the happiest times of her life. As you mentioned, she had recently gotten engaged and was looking forward to the Engagement Party her family planned to throw her next week. Instead, her life and her world has been turned upside down after a car crashed through the wall of her family house. Shes beautiful. She has a great personality. This man says his friends 25yearold daughter had everything to look forward to. Recently engaged to be married, the womans world came crashing down when an suv went blowing through the wall of the familys converted garage last night where the young woman was asleep inside. The speed of the impact that would cause a vehicle to go through an entire wall of a house could be nothing but violent. San Leandro Police say witnesses estimate the suv was going 80 to 100 Miles Per Hour when it side swiped around car and crashed into the house, killing two of the familys dogs and pinning the woman underneath it. This neighbor rushed over to try to help. Most terrifying part was that she had her head on to the side, her arms extended. She was gasping. Tonight, the victim is undergoing surgery and family members who were planning to throw an Engagement Party next week are now at the hospital, praying shell recover. Police say the crash is among the worst they have ever seen. I have seen many a crashes where cars have crashed into homes, but i have never seen a car that has completely penetrated a wall and landed inside the home. Police say the driver was also injured but nothing compared to what the victim is suffering. Hes being tested for drugs and alcohol, but police say at the very least, he faces charges of reckless driving causing great bodily injury. Reporting live in san leandro, jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Okay, hopefully the victim will make a recovery soon. Thanks, jodi. Sand bags are being filled and stocked for when el nino does hit. Nbc bay areas Michelle Roberts is live at a levee in san jose. Officials are paying close attention to levees like this one as well as rivers and creeks. Yeah, thats right. One of the vulnerable spots if there was flash flooding coming through the creek. Thats why theyre focused on this spot. There were crews out here making sure they know how to do it if there is an emergency. They had tarps laid out over the dirt and sandbags which they also encourage you to do at home. The scott family has lived in this palo alto home for more than 30 years. Flooding is rarely an issue, but in 98 when a creek overflowed the water in the yard was at least a foot deep. Today, john with the Palo Alto Public Works Department used the scotts home to demonstrate something many of us think we know how to do, but likely arent doing it correctly. If you want to lay the sandbags in an overlapping pattern like laying a brick wall. He says two layers of sandbags on top of a plastic tarp thats taped to the wall should be enough to keep the water out of a garage or sliding glass door. Fold it over like a big burrito. If you have vents or crawl spaces at the base of the home . Plywood at the base, sand bags firmly up against the plywo plywood. Not far away, the california and san jose conservation corps were training to use similar tactics on a levee along Guadalupe River bed. There are several spots where you can pick up free sandbags. Theyre upset the city is considering eliminating strict rules for Ride Sharing Companies like uber and lyft at sjc. Marianne is live at San Jose City hall where the council could decide the matter in the next couple hours. Thats right. In fact, right now, the city council is listening to comments. The taxi strike impacted the entire city. And the cabbies say unless the city does more to make things equal between uber drivers and taxi drivers, they will continue to strike. We have no vehicles at the curb. Can you give me some shuttles . We have no limos. Passengers arriving at San Jose International airport today found no cabs waiting for them for the second day in a row. The fallout from whats now a citywide taxi strike. Instead, they had to rely on shuttles, limos, buses, or uber to get where they needed to be. Disappointing to come from san diego and you cant get a car for us. Instead of lining up here, many of the tax adrivers were here. Protesting in front of San Jose City hall. Theyre opposing a plan allowing uber drivers to pick up fares at the airport as long as 1 of them a month are randomly checked for criminal backgrounds and arrest warrants. All the taxi drivers go through a background check and full fingerprint. Thats whats missing. The mayor says san diego airport is already doing the random audits and says it makes sense in san jose, too. I think this is the best move we can make, given the position were in, to improve the safety for our customers at the same time increasing their choice. The cabbies, however, say Ride Sharing Companies like uber have already taken 40 of their business by undercutting their pricing. And they say its if the Council Approves the new proposal, they will soon be out of jobs. About 450 cabbies went on strike today in san jose. Reporting live at city hall, nbc bay area news. Thanks, marianne. Helping a friend move, we have all done it. It can be a dreaded task. When a south bay man needed help, there were plenty of volunteers. Garvin thomas joins us with our bay area proud. Jim gardener founded good karma bikes with a believe a bicycle can change a persons life. For someone of little means, it can make a difference in holding down a job or getting an education. But in order to keep helping others, jim recently needed a little help himself. For the past six years, good karma bikes has been great news for san joses needy and homeless. Providing literally thousands over that time with reliable twowheel transportation and the skills to keep it that way. Its a privilege to do this. Jim started good karma bikes out of the trunk of his car. I think i can fix it. As his nonprofit grew, he upgraded to a van, and in 2013, good karma bikes got its first home on san joses sunol avenue. But now, its time to move again. And heres the problem. For all the great things jim says you can do with a bike, theres something you cant. Bicycles are wonderful. They roll and they move. But they dont stack well. And thanks to their success, good karma now has more bikes than ever, but not enough in the moving budget to pay someone else to move them. So the nonprofit that has helped so many put out its own call for help. And boy, did they get it. A literal parade of volunteers showed up this past saturday to watch each and every one of the hundreds of bikes to good karmas new home. A slow speed procession to preserve a much loved mission. Ty thompson took them two at a time. As soon as the word went out they were moving, people want to be a part of something positive and something big, bigger than themselves, right . Some had never worked with good karma bikes before. Just heard they needed a hand. Others like vince felt the need to pay back a good deed good karma did for him. Because it might happen to me again or Something Else might happen down the line. I might need their help again. Many hands, it turned out, made smooth rolling. Within a couple hours, all the bikes were in their new home. Jim ready to leave his empty warehouse with a full heart. I said it all along, theres many wonderful people in our community. So many wonderful people. Wasnt that a great sight . A great sight to see. The new home is on lincoln avenue in san jose. Theyve had a Good Relationship and they made a new facility for them because the old one is going to be torn down and housing is going to go in there. Theyre excited ibt the new space.
