Public works crews in Alameda County are busy scooping up a muddy mess. Yesterdays powerful rain storm sent the hillsides along livermores tesla road sliding down. Right onto the street. The danger is mudslides. They get slick and cars go off the road. Patterson got hit hard, too. While crews were able to clear that road up relatively quickly, tesla road is taking a little longer. Folks here worry with el nino on the way and much of the area barren from a recent fire, the hillsides may not hold up very well. All these hillsides dont have vegetation, and i think its going to be more problems down the road. The california gelogical survey warns much of the bay area may be hit with mudslides this winter. You know, raj, you dont want to get too scientific, but theyre telling us the device that will be used for the underwater implosion of the old eastern span of the bay bridge, it was not satisfactory to carry out this on november 7th. Now, the stage is set for the 14th, but even that can change. Were ready to implode a structure. But not quite yet. Caltrans officials telling the media today the scheduled implosion for saturday had to be pushed back a week. A spokesperson telling me afterwards, some materials used for this implosion did not meet their specifications. It was determined by our contractor as well as our engineers that the specs did not meet their design. They say the implosion of pier e3 should take six section. The concrete debris falling into hollow structures, protecting wi wildlife. According to project officials, november is the safest month. I think thats overly optimist. Says ian ren, with San Francisco bay keeper, a nonprofit dedicated to stopping pollution in the bay. Hes not sold on the idea of a bubble curtain containing all of the debris. When this sign was built in 1953, eisenhower was in the white house, and the very first color tvs and corvettes went on sale. Soon, it could be a protected landmark. Its a steady presence in an area famous for change. The carousel above Cambrian Park plaza still slowly turning as plans are being made to some day give it historical landmark status. California is so new that anything any kind of preservation of history is a good thing. Santa clara county supervisor ken jaeger is spearheading the preservation plan. I think what the neighbors were looking for is some sort of guarantee that the carousel would remain, and by giving it historic designation, it will do that. So i think were just trying to make it 100 sure. The Shopping Center here on camden and union is under new ownership, and so far, there are no plans to replace the sign. But a guarantee would, some say, be appreciated. Something can be said about anchoring some sort of memory to the place by the people who have been going here for a lot of years, i think, that could be nice for everybody. A symbol of the old days even as a new era prepares to move in. Supervisor jaeger admits this is just one step towards bringing this sign to historical status.
