Weekend, compared to Labor Day Weekend of last year. New at 5 00, vandals with a message of hate are targeting a neighborhood in San Francisco. No more chinese. Someone spray painted those words in several spots in the Bay View District over the weekend. The three locations that were vandalized were blocks from each other. They included an abandoned Grocery Store and playground. Police are asking for help in catching the people behind this hate crime. The search for that woman who jumped off the bay bridge is now over. Chp officers have arresteder lynn Sanchez Edwards in oakland today. Police say she was the woman who crashed a stolen car on the bay bridge last month and when officers tried to detain her she jumped off a bridge. A truck driver picked her up. Police had been looking for her until now. Lets take you outside. Have you broken a sweat yet . It is hot. Across the bay area, that about says it all. Even San Francisco. Take a look. Not a cloud in the sky, as they say, the coast is clear. And on this holiday, head to the beach. But when a lot of people got to the beach, they saw warning signs. A strong ridge of High Pressure shutting down the cooler ocean air conditioning. 86 degrees right now in San Francisco. 90 in oakland. Temperatures continue to go up in san jose. Dublin, 98 degrees as the heatwave is just getting started. Valley temperatures today, nearing 100 degrees. Theyll go above that for tomorrow. And unfortunately as High Pressure acts like a lid on top of the bay area, air quality issues starting tomorrow and likely lasting through friday. Spare the air tuesday, worst air quality levels, east bay and south bay. And the other components of the story is the place that you normally go to find relief from the heat. Unfortunately, seeing rough surf. Wave heights off shore still 6 to 8 feet and into this evening, a beach hazards alert due to rip currents and larger sneaker waves approaching the coast. And in this case, the coast not only really the place to escape the heat. Santa cruz, the next couple days will be in the 90s, as inland temperatures climb even higher than today. Thousands flocked to the coast to escape the heat and enjoy the last gasp of summer. Some dangers that may have kept people out of the water today. Marianne. But once they saw how huge and unpredictable the waves were, some families changed their plans. Watch closely as this little girl on the jetty at Twin Lakes State Beach in santa cruz gets a firsthand look at the dangers that come with a visit to the beach today. The National Weather service issued a beach hazard warning from Sonoma County to Monterey County because of a high risk of sneaker waves today. All us moms decided to keep the kids out of the water. They looked too big and rough and they were disappointed, of course. But we said sorry. Reporter Jennifer Kurtz is celebrating the end of the summer with her 4yearold son, caden. But with waves 7 feet high and a riptide warning in effect, she is not taking any chances. When i take caden out, were right by the shoreline, and im very mindful of, you know, the waves, and anything coming in. Reporter this little girl was lucky. She got an unexpected saltwater shower. But sneaker waves can be deadly. In december of 2012, a sneaker wave swept a 9yearold boy and his father into the ocean as they were fishing. They both died, which is one reason on this labor day Jennifer Kurtz is not letting her son out of her sight. A wellknown bay area family is in mourning. But its also desperate for answers. How did their son die, exactly . And why cant they see the body . This happened yesterday in southern california. But tonight we have some new information on the death of michael harris. The 26yearold was the eldest son of peter and jan harris. Peter, the former ceo of the 49ers. Michael was a High School Counselor at his alma mater in atherton. He was with his girlfriend, kelly wells, over the weekend. They were on a small boat, a dinghy near Catalina Island at 1 00 a. M. On sunday. His girlfriend and two others have minor injuries. The fifth person on board is presumed dead. This is now a homicide investigation. Thats what we have discovered today. Many questions on who was at fault and if alcohol was a factor. Late this afternoon, about 40 minutes ago, we spoke with michaels brothers who talked about what they admired most about their brother. Theres no single thing. I think its the presence that he brought to every moment and were going to keep that with us and were going to always have that, you know, wherever we go, wherever we are. Thats david harris, very difficult for that family, of course. Everybody at men low school. Getting back to peter harris, he was named the ceo of the 49ers back in july of 2000. He left the team after four years but still remains close with the york famieam issued th statement to us today, and we quote. The entire 49ers organization offers heartfelt condolences to peter and the Harris Family on the tragic loss of their son michael. We knew michael as a caring young man who is a joy to be around. I spoke with spirit and jan harris a few times today. They are thankful for the support from the community, but also frustrated. They might not be able to see their sons body for one or two weeks, which is fairly typical in a homicide investigation. In other news right now, both directions of his abel avenue, part of highway 84 in livermore still shut down after a deadly crash involving a motorcyclist. Officers say the motorcyclist may have run into two cars that had collided seconds before. This happened just before 1 00 this afternoon. When emergency crews arrived, they found the motorcyclist lying on the road. They attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. A 2. 9 magnitude earthquake rattled both napa and sonoma counties today. The quake struck at 7 35 this morning east of the sonomanapa county line. People in the area described it as a quick jolt. It did not cause any injuries, nor did it damage any homes or businesses. You may remember a much stronger 6. 1 earthquake last year in napa county killed one person and injured more than 200 others. That tremor also caused millions of dollars in damage. So what now . What happens to that botched hospital project in Santa Clara County . Tomorrow the county is expected to decide if it will fire, terminate, the highfro pro file builder in charge of the project, Turner Construction. They are years behind schedule, and its far from ready. Nbc bay areas robert handa broke the story last week and joins us now with what this decision could mean for a lot of the workers there right behind you, robert. Reporter well, thats right, raj. Allow along with looking ahead to tomorrows meeting, on labor day, it seems appropriate to address what might happen to the work on this massive construction project if turnner is fired or cannot meet the countys terms. There is still a lot of labor to be done on the 300 million Santa Clara ValleyMedical Center project but the main work is going on behind the scenes, as the county and Turner Construction get ready for a showdown meeting tomorrow afternoon. As we reported, the county on friday set conditions turner would have to meet to stay on the project that started six years ago. The terms included rigid construction deadlines, insured with a multimillion dollar line of credit. And after releasing video of a steam explosion on the site last year, stricter safety measures. We have seen, obviously, that turner has had some safety problems, and therefore tomorrow well look for some evidence, proof, theyre going to improve their safety record. Reporter the county accused turner of not taking the hospital project seriously, and says it believes the Construction Company even diverted subcontractors to its 49ers levis stadium project. Turner blames county mismanagement, citing thousands of chains the county requested. Caught in the middle are the construction workers, about 130 of them. Many approached nbc bay area and asked what will happen to them if the project is halted. If turner gets fired, i think the workers should still be okay. I have every expectation that the county would treat them fairly and i have had some assurances that would be the case. Reporter now today the county told us it is taking some protective measures for the workers. Turner construction says it will not comment on the situation until tomorrow. A new benefit for more than 300,000 federal contract workers. This morning, president obama signed an executive order that would require contractors to grant nearly all their employees up to seven days of paid sick leave per year. Of a group of black women from the napa valley wine people outraged by the ousting of a group of black women from the Napa Valley Wine Train are organizing another tour called the soul train. This shows them being escorted off after complaints they were too rowdy. Jodi hernandez is live in napa with what the organizers hope to accomplish. Reporter organizers want to make sure that everyone feels welcome here in wine country. They also want to celebrate wineries that represent inclusiveness. They say move over, Napa Valley Wine Train. The soul train is heading to town. We want the one train to understand that is unacceptable. It will not be tolerated. Unacceptable. Reporter thats the message the Oakland Food Policy Council hopes to send the Napa Valley Wine Train. Two weeks after a group of africanamerican women were booted off the train following a noise complaint for their laughter. She is organizing what she calls a more inclusive wine tour. The bay areas mexican bus will become the wine soul train for a day, taking winelovers on a tour of africanamerican and latinoowned wineries. Its a like a big hug to the women in the book club. Its celebrating the people creating loving and welcoming environments. I think thats really cool. Reporter the womens civil rights Attorney Says the Book Club Members appreciate the show of support. Their hope is that napa valley becomes more inclusive of africanamericans and brown people. People of color, for sure. Reporter the wine soul train will leave oakland for wine country on september 26th. Organizers say those on board can laugh as loudly as they want to. Were going to have a great time. Its going to be a day of laughter, and celebration. Reporter now tickets can be bought online. San Francisco Police have now arrested the man they believe used a bicycle lock to smash a drivers window. It happened during last months Critical Mass bike ride. Officers arrested ian hisbelt saturday after noticing he matched the description of the man in the video. The 39yearold now faces a number of felony charges, including assault with a Deadly Weapon and vandalism. Some local heroes on this holiday weekend. Their fire truck broke down so a group of east bay firefighters ran to their next job and saved a life. Nbc bay areas scott budman joins us with this remarkable story, scott. Raj, three firefighters from con at that cost at that county could have waited, but someone nearby needed help so they grabbed their gear and took off. This is what we carry. Reporter captain craig ozan showed us the 40 pounds of gear he and two other firefighters from station 52 carried as they ran to save a life. Running, because their rig broke down near this shopping center. While waiting for that tow truck, a medical cardiac arrest was occurring approximately a quarter mile away. The crew and myself decided we would pick up our medical gear and head over on foot. Reporter its a good thing they did. Every second mattered. It was. He was in cardiac arrest when we arrived. Reporter while the three firefighters gave the victim cpr, an ambulance arrived to help. Eventually, the patient was taken to a nearby hospital. Captain ozan says they never stopped to think about the unusual rescue. It was something we did, because we could help. Reporter Contra Costa County recently closed some stations. The captain said fewer stations didnt make a difference. Right now station 52s rig is being repaired. Janelle and raj . Great story. We thank them for their service. For sure. Usually the spot we like to find some cooling now, San Francisco, were seeing very interesting temperatures. Ocean beach, not too bad. 73 degrees. But look closer to downtown right now, still 86 degrees there. A little west wind now. Mostly clear skies. South bay, similar story there, with mostly sunny conditions. Temperatures around downtown san jose still in the low 90s. Morgan hill 97 degrees. And downtown san jose, mostly sunny, 92 now. But the hottest temperatures of the day happening right out there towards the east bay and tri valley. Seeing numbers in the upper 90s and still closer to 90 degrees around oakland. You see 98 there in dublin and yes, oakland in the low 90s earlier. And still near 90 degrees. So weve got these hot temperatures outside, and notice the humidity levels. You dont see this often. Singledigit numbers from napa into livermore. Now, we would have probably red glad conditions if the winds were stronger. We have got the dry air in place. Wind speeds not too strong but really the wind direction is the big story here. Still offshore as we head into tomorrow, will ensure both the clear skies were seeing now, not just for the bay area, but High Pressure from seattle to san diego. Were going to see warm temperatures all up and down the west coast over the next two or three days. So morning temperatures tomorrow, 50s and 60s. Then look what happens here by noon. Already in the mid 90s in livermore. Upper 80s in san jose. San francisco once again making a run into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees for tomorrow. So san jose, 97 degrees for tomorrow. Temperatures climbing above 100 Degrees South of downtown. You see San Francisco in the mid to upper 80s, close to 90 degrees in downtown. Redwood city mid 90s for tomorrow. Upper 90s to near 100 in santa rosa. And you see once again the tri valley towards walnut creek, the hottest temperatures around the bay area, 100 to 105 degrees, and downtown san jose, at least through about thursday and friday, staying in the mid 90s and higher with a little bit of relief as we head towards the weekend. For saratoga, los gatos and campbell, very close to 100 degrees and hot into the weekend. And heres livermore. 103, 105, very close to 100 as we move into the weekend. And San Francisco may see a little bit of cooling towards the end of the week. Still staying hot the next three days. That will eventually bring the cooling to us. Well be the sea breeze picking back up. The heatwave lasting as we start the weekend. As we bet towards sunday, finally signs this high will give some ground. If youre planning on cooler weather, unfortunately, you have to wait until sunday at this point. Youll see the wind finally coming back onshore. So from now all the way through saturday, were expecting some hot temperatures, but by sunday, theres some good news there. So the north bay, east bay and south bay, low 90s will seem cool compared to the territory were going to be looking at from tomorrow into saturday. If we can go above 100 degrees, we could see records falling, i think, especially wednesday into thursday. A man found dead right in the street. This is antiochs third homicide of the year. It happened yesterday near lake al ham bra and highway 4. No word on any suspects or motives. In san jose, the hunt is on for a passenger who ran away from a deadly rollover crash. Investigators believe a driver was thrown from his truck and killed. It happened about 2 30 this morning on the connecter ramp to capital expressway. Also two passengers in the truck, both survived. But one ran away. Tonight police would like to talk to that person. This is san joses 32nd traffic fatality this year. They have been hunting for him for days now. Now that tangled blue whale has been found. The coast guard and other private boats have been looking for the whale since friday when it disappeared off the coast of southern california. The 80foot mammal is entangled in hundreds of feet of fishing line. The whale was spotted off the coast of mexico earlier today. U. S. Rescuers cannot work the waters in mexico, so they have contacted their mexican counterpart. Of the whale disappeared after rough seas forced workers to give up efforts to free the animal last week. Going gold for a good cause. The Young Players of an east bay socc soccer club added gold shoelaces today. They hope the colorful gesture will raise awareness about pediatric cancer. The laces are also being sold in conjunction with the nonprofit go for the gold. The kids are putting on the laces, running around enjoying themselves. But in the back of their mind, they know theyre supporting someone who doesnt have the opportunity. The sale of the laces have raised at least 8,000 for the ucsf Childrens Hospital in oakland and other pediatric hospitals nationwide. Very nice. Still ahead, the daring way hundreds of local swimmers spent this labor day, next. Strong currents, and potentially dodging sharks. Navigating choppy water, strong currents and potentially dodging sharks. Yes, people chose to do that today on labor day. They participated in the sixth annual golden gate shark fest swim. Swimmers were taken by ferry to the golden gate bridge. From there they swam in open water past the north tower. Thats a total of 1. 6 miles, about the length of the bridge. The event started about 8 00 this morning and was open to experienced swimmers between the ages of 5 and 100. So basically, its open to anybody. You just have to be a really good swimmer.
