Rk, what exactly is the problem and whats the solution . Reporter well Lennar Corporation wont tell us exactly how much water they have used over the past couple of months, except it is in the quote, many thousands of gallons and it is water from San Franciscos reservoir, though for much of the work lennar has been doing out here the Company Really didnt have much choice. What riled up neighbors was the news that in a drought they were letting their lawns turn brown while precious Drinking Water was being sprayed on dust at candlestick. And in one neighborhood near the park they werent getting any water. This was just before easter. Reporter julia barber lives in this house just a block away from the stadium. One day she turned on the tap and got almost nothing. Tons of air coming out of the pipes and little splashes of water with it. Reporter apparently lennars demolition crews were taking so much water for dust suppression that the neighborhood didnt have enough to take a shower. We said to them at the time why are you pulling our Potable Water . Were in a drought and this is blue water, right, this is not gray water. Reporter come to find out from the San Francisco Public Utilities commission it is against state law to use recycled or gray water to knock down dust at a demolition site because you are spraying that water into the air. Just because its not fully Drinking Water and they dont want people to inhale or ingest it. Reporter a spokesman explained its about bacteria in the recycled water. To which an environmental consultant for the neighborhood had this reply put some bleach in it. It will kill the bacteria in it. Reporter but it is not that simple the puc spokesman told me even if you could purify the water completely it would still be against the law to spray it in the air for dust suppression. I asked him if the puc was in contact with the state legislature or Health Officials to perhaps change that law, he said, no though if the drought continues, those talks could begin. In the meantime they are going to use recycled water out here on this site where it can be used, and that is for spraying on the ground and for soil compaction. Reporting from Candlestick Park, Mark Matthews, nbc bay area news. Certainly a topic up for discussion. Thanks, mark. Another sign the bay area economy is rebounding.
