Its been very slow to get down there to downtown but we think thats going to happen the next 20, 30 minutes or so. Rainfall totals, unreal. Pacific heights over two and a half inches, fremont over 3 inches, san jose over 2 inches as well. With that said we have a Flash Flood Watch in effect. Thats going to continue as we head throughout this evening. Well talk more about this storm system when it finally clears out coming up throughout the show. Hopefully you werent caught up in the rain and outside but if you were, you werent alone. Plenty of people trying to get around surface streets. This was a common scene across the region, rising water. This was broadway and douglas in redwood city just a few blocks from hoover school. These cars at least could get through. Other people in redwood city, not as fortunate. Just down the road, a Mobile Home Park has been flooded. Plenty of families scrambling to get out. Nbc bay areas Michelle Roberts is on the scene. Reporter its been a very devastating day for so many families here. Right now you can see the traffic going by bayhistory avenue. Because theyre trying to avoid 101. The side road is starting to flood. As the sun goes down, the rain is also pushing through. Theres a creek behind this Mobile Home Park, about 50 families who live here now having to be evacuated. Some had to be rescued this afternoon. Just one of the many issues that happened along the peninsula this afternoon. Drivers were caught in deep water in redwood city this afternoon. One woman needed help to push her car to Higher Ground on broadway near douglas. Flooded roads were easy to spotting the peninsula. On embarcadero near 101 in palo alto, a flood sign poked out of the water. Drivers had to hit hit the brakes approaching pools covering the road. East palo alto huge tree branches fell onto a car. So here tonight there are many people that dont know where they will spend the night because theyve been told its safe to evacuate but say they cant afford anything else. So theyre just wading through the water and trying to see if anything in their home is dry enough to stay in tonight. Certainly a very scary situation for a lot of people here. Theyre hoping this water will recede soon. As ive seen in the last hour, it continues to push further and further closer to the roadway. So disappointing and disheartening for those families in redwood city. This was the scene in oakland. A retaining wall ripped apart and slid down a hill into the neighbors house. The couple living in the home tells us they were aware of the wall sliding and actually had scheduled a Structural Engineer to look at it tomorrow. But obviously it was too late. The couple says around noon today, they started hearing loud cracks and pops for about 30 minutes and that was when the wall tore apart and slid into the neighbors. Lets go to the east bay. A dangerous situation there, several cars are submerged in about 4 feet of water. It is happening at the underpass near i80 by ashby. Christie smith has been at the scene, she joins us live in berkeley where crews are working on removing those cars. Reporter thats right. It looks like the temporary pumps they brought in to pump out all that standing floodwater seem to be working. Because in the distance there you can see the white car, thats the one furthest to us, currently there are two more behind that. When we first checked in we could only see the roof, now were seeing the windshield and windows. What theyre thinking is the pumps seem to be working. They brought them in, what theyre saying is a pump house nearby just was overwhelmed and it was high tide and the water just rose here at i80 and ashby. Cars tried to pass when the water was lower. Im told that everyone made it out okay. But since then, theyve been out here trying to figure a way to get all of this water out. So again, theyve got these pumps working. Theyre basically just sucking the water out, pulling it out of the underpass. They say this is something that does happen here because its a low area. Certainly not this degree. I asked when they might have it pumped out and they said at this point they just dont know but it does appear that the water is going down just a bit. Literally cars stuck in the water there in berkeley. Power outages and huge flooding also plaguing San Francisco today. Take a look at this video. Scott budman joins us along the embarcadero with the latest. I know at one point the embarcadero was shut down because water just was pounding over the walls. Yeah, and its still coming down. Both in terms of rain and over the flood wall, raj. The embarcadero, much, much quieter than usual this evening. Not just because of rain but as you mentioned, power has been out for most of the day up and down this stretch. Some cafes and restaurants using backup generators to feed their customers. All in all, its been a rough day for businesses and for drivers. The water went as high as the retaining wall along 280 near daly city. All day long cars had to drive gingerly. In south San Francisco, some cars didnt make it to where they were going. I was driving by and the car was floating. Reporter horacio francos car got stuck in water on linden avenue in south San Francisco. Water that quickly rose to window level. Water goes inside the car, the engine doesnt run no more, it stops. It stopped. Were you trapped . Yeah, all the way to here. Reporter he managed to crawl out and even as the surrounding water began to recede, some smaller cars decided not to risk it. It was a similar scene all over south San Francisco. Sump pumps trying to clear flooded businesses and streets so flooded, the san bruno cal train station suddenly became waterfront property. You could say the same about the embarcader embarcadero, which is all but shut down. A casual survey tells you a lot of cafes and restaurants are shutting down early. Very little foot traffic here up and down embarcadero. In case youre heading home, much less traffic, commute traffic, than usual. Things are simply shut down here. A lot of people either leaving home early or they stayed home today. Take a look behind you, like you said, theres no one there. Its 5 07 p. M. It looks empty. Thats right. This is normally a hip place to be even if its raining a little bit. But a, its raining a lot. And a lot of Power Outages. A lot of people dont know exactly which restaurants and bars and cafes are out of power so many people clearly stayed away. Very good point. Scott budman along the embarcadero. The evening commute very light compared to what we typically see out of milpitas and fremont. The wind calmer than when i was covering it this morning and the flag was perpendicular. Flooding reported in the roadway. 87 through Mountain View. The latest report comes in 101 southbound at wood side. Just where jeff was talking about. That rain coming through at a furious pace. 2 inches per hour in spots through los altos as well. The bay bridge, no real problems. Thats going to be tracking south close to Mountain View. As we head throughout the next 15 minutes. We have the timeline on the storm and when it moves out in a few minutes. A look at flooded roads in al viso. High waters leaving homeowners struggling to get out of their homes. Our weather alert continues after the break. We want to update you on breaking news. A partial roof collapse at the safeway at the silver creek plaza safeway located just east of 101 and capital expressway in east san jose. Damian trujillo is live on the scene. We hear there is one minor injury reported. Reporter thats what were hearing at the scene right now. Were told this happened in the produce section. If we can zoom in to where the ladder is right now. Thats the portion of this building that has collapsed. In fact, its a little hard for firefighters here to assess how bad this damage is. Theyre not going in yet at this point. They dont have a helicopter to help them. It had to be grounded one more time. Theyre trying to assess how bad this damage is. In fact, they use our cam footage to look and see how they were going too attack this situation, at what point they were going to send firefighters up to the rooftop here and see what they can do to kind of make sure that the building is sturdy and able for them to kind of go in there and assess the situation. Firefighters climbing down that ladder right now. Again, one minor injury we are told. The building has been evacuated successfully. We see that there are no lights inside at this point. I overheard firefighters talking about how old this building is. Were going to pan over to the right at this point right now. Just want to show you what the incident command looks like. These are the folks who are making the decisions as far as who goes in where and how they are going to approach the situation at this point. Its very precarious. They were talking about the age of this building. But they say its very fortunate that there is only one minor injury at this point. The entire parking lot here at the capital expressway Safeway Shopping Center has been roped off. A lot of looky lous are stopping by to see whats going on. Firefighters plan on being here for a while to make sure this roof does not come down on anyone. Nobodys being allowed inside at this point. Thanks for the update. Its not helping, you can see the rain coming down hard in san jose. Well head north to the north bay. Tense situation as people wait and watch hoping a creek doesnt lead to flooding. In san anselmo, the creek is near flood stage but hasnt gone over the top yet. Mark matthews is there watching along with the rest of the town. Whats the situation right now . Reporter well, it has not gone over the top. I think its dropped a little in the last hour or so. You can see sandbags behind me. Lets take a look at the creek. It continues to rain here. And that continues to be a concern. Every few minutes someone stops their car to get out and check the creek. All along san anselmo avenue sandbags block doorways. Upstream in fairfax neighbors check on the water for others who did not stay home today. This is a minor little creek that kids play in during the summertime. Reporter not today. Today its not people coming down to check it out, including the countys water rescue team. Definitely a lot of water moving down there. Reporter the san Anselmo Fairfax area is fortunate compared to other parts of the north bay. This is highway 37 just off the 101 going eastbound. Take a look at that. 37 westbound is closed between atherton avenue and 101. We saw a cal trans truck make it through. There was a pg e truck that made it. But it is too high for the chp to open the road. The exit onto 37 from the 101 is closed. Though 101 remains open from novato to the golden gate. And that is very good news. As we say, the water appears to be dropping maybe a foot in the last hour, hour and a half. Well keep an eye on it. Well be back at 6 00. A lot happening and we are not in the clear. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. A lot going on at this hour. Whats going to happen in the next few hours moving forward . The bulls eye of the storm system is across the bay area. We have clearing back out here. Then its still several hours away at this point as that storm system is slowly clipping off towards the south. Now once that storm system arrived this morning, talk about gusty winds that brought down over 100,000 Power Outages across the bay area. Los gatos, 64mileperhour wind gust. Oakland hills 59. San francisco 40. Well take you to Doppler Radar right now. Many of you looking outside your windows wondering when this rainfall is going to stop. Well, we need it. Its good for the drought, great for the fire danger. This is all too much in such a short amount of time. In 24 hours time weve probably picked up more than we had for the entire calendar year last year. So when you look at Doppler Radar, the things you want to watch out for are the orange and also the yellow. That is the heavy and intense rainfall. We have two main zones of that occurring right now. You know oar feeling it back here across the east bay and peninsula. Thats where its the heaviest. Rainfall rates about. 5 to 1 inches per hour. Slowly moving to the south. Youll likely have this the next three hours. Then eventually that moving right on top of san jose. Now we have another zone of heavy rainfall that were really concerned about right now. Thats from morgan hill down to gilroy. This will continue probably for about the next two hours. But rainfall in the forecast here as we head throughout the next several hours. So our Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight. What you should know about this is youre going tone counter some water on the roadways. If you do not know the depth, turn around as the saying goes, dont drown. One foot of water, it dont know look like one foot but it could be three or four feet. You drive your car into it, you get stuck, and thats where peoples lives get into risk. Watch out for standing water on the roadways. Now lets go ahead and get to the timeline. You can see 7 00 tonight areas of rainfall continuing here across the bay area. By 11 00, wed love to push this out of here but its not going to happen. Likely moderate rain staying through 11 00, 11 30. Eventually, as we head throughout tomorrow, the storm system will break up. Some scattered areas of rainfall, possibly isolated thunderstorms right through friday afternoon. So as we go ahead and get a look at the forecast, what youll see is the chance of rain stays for tomorrow. Not nearly as heavy. Dry weather on saturday and sunday. Well need it because well have another storm system by next monday and tuesday. Not nearly as strong but could bring. 5 to 1 inches of rain. Were continuing team coverage, more after the break. High water and downed trees not to mention a very dangerous highway 17. Robert handa joins us from the summit with the latest. Reporter the rain has been coming down hard throughout the day in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Even though it eased up once in a while it never really stopped for any significant amount of time. And that led to problems. The storm seemed relentless in the Santa Cruz Mountains today and it didnt take long for water to begin rushing down streets as well as creeks and rivers. The st. Lorenzo river is rising and its history of flooding has people in felton grove on edge. This river has risen from id say at least probably four or five feet, maybe six, and even today im seeing it rise. I want to say a foot, maybe even a foot and a half. We have a siren that will alert people when they need to get ready and we have a siren that will alert people when they need to get out. Reporter conditions also led to some flash flooding. The thompson home in ben lomond ended up in about 3 feet of water. I prepared all day yesterday. Thought i was ready. But i guess its really hard to prepare for a flash flood. Reporter we heard that a lot from people today. They said they were trying to prepare but its hard to get ready for a storm that never really lets up. Not letting up yet, more rain on the way. A few glimpses of our wild weather around the bay area and the region. This is a clip in san jose. High winds knocking down and uprooting several trees. Unfortunately, this home here bore the brunt of that damage. This might be the most colorful image of the day. Surfs up at lake tahoe. High winds whipping up waves on the lake. Surfers taking full advantage of the storm, surfing today, fresh powder tomorrow. This could be an epic weekend for skiers and snowboarders. Today it was about the surfers. Updating breaking news in san jose. A partial roof collapse at the silver creek plaza safeway just east of 101 in east capital expressway. One reported minor injury. The incident commanders behind me are still trying to assess the situation to see how theyre going to attack this. We do understand there was one minor injury here at the safeway store. The roof partially collapsed over the produce section. And there are three ladder trucks that are kind of hovering over the roof right now to see which way the firefighters are going to go up and assess the situation at this point. In fact, at one point the incident commanders mad to go into our news truck to look at youre video to get a birds eye view of what actually theyre dealing with up here on the roof of the safeway store. So theyre going to be here for a while. Theyre not going to go up there just yet. Nobody is inside the store at this point. Theyre trying to assess how bad this damage is and if the roof right now, whats left of it, is vulnerable. They dont want to go up if its vulnerable. Theyre going to try to assess and it try to take care of it after that. Silver creek safety, that could have been a lot worse, but thankfully no major injuries and only one reported injury. Jeff ranieri is with us. I think youre the favorite for thousands of school kids who stayed home thanks to the weather man. Its a good thing they did. Were seeing all the problems we thought we would see with this storm system. You can see Doppler Radar, only a handful of times in a tenyear period weve seen this much rainfall. The problem is we normally see our storms move in and out within a three to fourhour period. This started around midnight last night and it is moving so slowly that you can probably run faster than this thing is moving. That is the problem with this storm system. The slow movement will keep us in isolated flooding as we continue throughout the evening. San jose we just saw Damian Trujillo down there. You can see a very heavy batch of rainfall just off to the north. Right now its over palo alto, west menlo park, hitting Mountain View in the next 20 to 30 minutes, eventually on top of downtown san jose and flooding concerns will continue. Ity until about 11 00 tonight were going to be in this zone of isolated flooding concerns throughout the bay area. Then eventually as we head throughout tomorrows forecast we will start to see some clearing coming our way. I will say from driving in myself, there was so much water on the roadways. Its hard to even tell where a dry patch is. Its dangerous out there. Ponding water in so many spots. Not till you run over it then youre like, oh my goodness. At night when it gets dark out there, its going to be super, super slick and hard to see anything. I would just stay home. I think you said, were going to take a look at viewer photos, the warnings last night and today, especially with all the schools, kept people off the roadways. Which was very helpful. I dont think weve canceled school ever in the last few decades because of rain. Rain day, not a snow day, a rain day.
