His coworker just screamed to him, get out. And when he said that, my husband saw the tree fall. Reporter she said her husband got out. There was two other men trying to lift the tree and he was trying to lift the tree with them, but it was too heavy. And he was pinned underneath the branch. Reporter firefighters say a person was transported with life threatening injuries. After the rain overnight, public works says four or five trees fell in the city, most were large ficus trees. What happens oftentimes is water accumulates on a tree and if the trees vulnerable, the weight can bring it down. Sometimes we also see that the roots get a little bit loose. Reporter she says the trees were planted 40 to 50 years ago. They were no longer allowed to be planted as city trees in the 90s because they started to become problematic. Weve removed a number of ficus trees already in the city where we know it looks like they have the potential for failure. So weve been working on that. I think now were going to step it up a little more. Reporter back here live, supervisor scott weiner has been working on this issue of coming up with longterm Funding Solutions for tree care and maintenance in the city. Coming up in our next hour, well be talking about why some people really think that funding and maintenance is the real issue. Reporting live in San Francisco, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. Okay, problematic trees, thank you, christie. Lets turn things over to jeff ranieri. Jeff, we needed this, quick punch of rain here. Yeah, the first widespread measurable rainfall of november arrived early this morning, with a most complex of wet weather right there across the peninsula and also the south bay. So for the south bay, something we have not seen a lot of over the past year, and that was widespread cloud cover here in our Weather Underground time lapse network throughout the Morning Hours and also rain that totalled over a half inch for a lot of the Higher Elevations in the south bay. So, how did we do on the rainfall totals . Well, probably rain from the top three storms of the past 12 months here for san jose, you can see for parts of the south bay we had. 15 downtown,. 24 iniesta and nearly a half inch. The peninsula also did really well when it came to those rainfall totals, pillar point,. 42,. 64 there across kings mountain. 43 in san carlos, and check it out, Redwood Shores also at. 33, as well. Now, we are not done with this rainfall just yet. Weve got a few areas of drizzle on the Doppler Radar right now. We are still tracking a second, a third, and possibly a fourth system as we head into next week. Ive got the timing on that coming up in about 15 minutes. Okay, thanks, jeff. Reporter raj, the works going to be done on the upper deck, as you say, at the very western edge of the bay bridge, from that support here that you see back about a quarter of a mile to those buildings. Now, they are going to be replacing six expansion joints, some have been in the bridge since it was built in 1936. This is what it looked like last month, the first time caltrans tried to repair the wornout joints, a backup slowing the morning commute to a crawl. I listened to the news and they said about an hour and a half to get over the bridge. Reporter yeah, hour or more to go eight miles. The backup was caused by drivers slowing down over temporary steel plates that were put in to cover the expansion joints. After a very frustrating friday, caltrans called it off. The people in charge decided lets go ahead and pull the plates off, lets regroup, and try to come up with some different ways of doing things. Reporter the new plan announced today will replace the wornout expansion joints, but instead of using plates to cover the newly laid concrete, caltrans is going to use rapid drying concrete, which will set up in as little as 90 minutes. Tomorrow night were going to be putting in a lane closure, lane number 5. Reporter the plan is to close a lane at a time, starting at 8 00 at night, and finishing no later than 5 00 in the morning on week days. Our crews will be done by 5 00 a. M. Monday through friday. Reporter and no steel plates, because this cement will be dry by the time the lanes open at 5 00. Now, it is going to raise the price about a Million Dollars more than planned. Its going to probably take about twice as long, and there are other problems for the People Living around the western end of this bay bridge, and well tell you about that. Well, that Historic Space Mission to the comet is now being overshadowed by a shirt here on earth. Space and sexism. Lets bring in our business and tech reporter scott budman. Scott, all of the hype and drama over the shirt. Ill tell you, raj, its almost hard to believe, even until you see the shirt and hear how it affected the scientific community, setting off a firestorm of protests on twitter from thousands of people who say an entire space agency has been insensitive to women. Its an exciting week for the space program. We not only landed on a comet, were now getting the first pictures back from the comet and they are spectacular. Sexiest mission theres ever been. Reporter but other pictures are also getting a lot of attention, pictures of scantily clad women on this shirt worn by scientist matt taylor of the European Space agency, stirring up so much backlash on social media, its being called the shirtstorm. I want to be the next mohawk guy and didnt think about the fact what he was doing was casually objectifying an entire class of people. Reporter then these comments from taylor about the comments. She is sexy, but i never said she was easy. Reporter sadly, according to one bay area scientist, all of this is just part of why its hard for women to get into and be taken seriously in scienceoriented careers. And that can be extremely disheartening. Reporter taking a celebration and making it cringe worthy. Among the countless people who weighed in today about the shirt, a woman claimed to have made it and given it to matt taylor as a gift. We have not, however, heard from taylor himself, despite the many media outlets, including ours, who have reached out. Janelle . Scott, thanks so much. How do you put together 24 squares and come out with one big heart . A cupertino woman has figured out how and it started as a way to honor her mother. Her passion is also giving comfort to others battling cancer. Garvin thomas is here with tonights bay area proud. I think the squares into a heart riddle would appeal to nicole. She was an Award Winning High School Math teacher who loved geometry. She has moved on to a different mission now, but with no less passion. And so 59 years old, stage 4 is rather scary. Reporter over the past two years, nicole has had a lot of practice telling her mothers story. Though practice in this case doesnt make perfect. Try not to cry, because i still its very hard. Reporter nicole grew up in northeast pennsylvania. Her mom, maryann, a single mother raising two kids, working two jobs. The familys meager lifestyle, a source of embarrassment at the time for nicole. Very, very embarrassing. I wouldnt let anybody know. I would stay home a lot. Reporter but with age and perspective, embarrassment was transformed into admiration for a woman who had given everything for her kids. She was the one who cared and always listened. Reporter listening, though, is all nicole could do three years ago when a doctor gave maryann some bad news. The doctor puts it up on the screen, everywhere you see yellow, thats cancer, and it was from her head to her toes and looked like her body was on fire. Reporter maryann died in november of 2012. Okay, start. Reporter nicole, now a mom herself, fell into a depression. It was her husband who suggested taking a class to take her mind somewhere else. So nicole looked at an Adult Education catalog. When i saw that crochet class, i knew, i just knew that was my connection back to my mom, so i just finished a border on this blanket. Reporter crochet because it was something her mom used to do. Crochet, because it was something nicole thought she could do to help others going through what her mother just did. Nicole, by the way, never took that class. Instead, she opened a laptop and began teaching herself. Five hours later, she had a single square and a big idea. How about we get the world involved . Reporter project chemo crochet was born. Im comforting all of those people in the world that need comfort during this hard time. Reporter her husband created a website asking others to crochet squares that nicole and friends would sew together into blankets for people battling cancer. Within two weeks, the first squares started coming in and in less than two years, nicole and her team have stitched and shipped close to 700 blankets, all over the country, with no idea of slowing down now. I know people want to help, and im not asking for money. Im asking for your time. Im asking for a piece of you to be a part of something bigger. Nicole started all this when she was still living in pennsylvania, so shes transplanted now to the bay area and is looking to build up her team of stitchers. The squares come from all over the world now, because people do that. They need people locally to send them to her and stitch them into the blanket. People go to the website, tell the story of a friend or a loved one who has cancer and a blanket is on the way. Very helpful during chemo treatments and a lot of times when they want to hug something. Just that thought someone is doing that for you. Exactly. Physical reminder of the emotional support out there. Thats great, thanks, garvin. Well, we had some rain, you probably saw it. It was nice. Nice to feel it. Jeff ranieri is out here with our forecast. I was up late last night, early this morning, enjoying the sound of the rainfall, pretty spectacular. For a lot of the south bay, the wet weather that moved in early this morning when a lot of you were sleeping is going to go down as the top five strongest storm of the season when it comes to totals. Check this out, picking up nearly an inch of rain. That was an outlier here. Certainly, a rogue total, but really impressive. St. Helena. 45. Livermore,. 35. Substantial for you. Youve had such a hard time picking up rainfall and milpitas,. 24. As we take you to the radar, were done with the worst of the activity. Spotty showers across the trivalley, also most of the east bay. Thats what i think is going to happen for tonight. Patchy areas of drizzle, but heavy, widespread rainfall is not going to happen throughout tonight. Well get you outside to the Sky Camera Network right now, we have the cloud cover up above, temperatures in the upper 50s, also low 60s. Feels like fall outside this evening. You can see here across the south bay, nothing in the way of any kind of clear skies on our Weather Underground camera. Weve got the widespread cloud cover, so well go ahead and advance the forecast. I think the next issue for us after that rainfall, weve got some moisture in the lower levels of the atmosphere. Once temperatures cool off tonight, its going to get that air to a condensation point, and i do think were going to have issues possibly some dense areas of patchy fog. Youll see visibility not too bad right now, its at five miles and or better, but by tomorrow morning we could see a few isolated spots with visibility down to less than a quarter of a mile. As we take you into the future cast, we keep the cloud cover with us, green popping up on here as that possibility of drizzle in the forecast through about 7 00 in the morning. By the afternoon for tomorrow, we should manage some sunny skies for the north bay, also for parts of the south bay, and then by this weekend, weve been watching a storm system getting very close by, but by all indications right now, the rainfall should stay off to the north and miss the bay area. Youre seeing that scrolling sevenday forecast. We have a bit of a drying trend before we get more rainfall next week. For temperatures on your friday forecast, we have sun mixed into san jose, 68 degrees. We should have a period of at least sunny skies down in the extreme south bay through about 2 00 and 3 00. Expecting that in morgan hill with 67. Well hang on to clouds in palo alto and 67. Pacifica 63, and well also keep the low 60s right across San Francisco throughout the marina and also for downtown. Now in the north bay, east bay, and trivalley well be clearing out from that storm system first in the north bay and thats why napa and santa rosa both looking at sunny skies for tomorrow and well go with partly sunny skies for pleasanton and also for livermore. So as we mentioned in the next couple of days, were goirng to undergo this drying trend throughout saturday, sunday, monday, even next tuesday with temperatures in the upper 60s to about 70 for san jose, also for San Francisco. Its right about where we should be. But then after that, i know a lot of you are really anxious to find out are we still going to see more storm systems line up. The way it looks right now, todays storm, we could call that storm number one. We likely could have a second storm, a third storm, and a fourth storm. Confidence level is still at about 60 of this happening right now, just because forecast model and timing keeps changing, but our best guess right now is next tuesday and wednesday, another storm system by next friday, third system, and next sunday, a fourth storm. Overall looks good for storms across the next 11 days. Raj and janelle . Still ahead, it trailed them for nearly two miles and the kayakers say they know why. Well, this big fish story is all true. A pair of kayakers now sharing this video of their encounter with a hammerhead shark. They were paddling off the coast of palm beach, florida, last friday when they noticed 13foot shark trailing them. The shark even bumped into one of the kayaks.
