Rancho feeding corporation recalled more than 8 Million Pounds of beef. At that time there were allegations that the plant had improperly processed cows that had eye cancer. According to the indictment released today, one of the owners ordered employees to carve usdacondemned stamps out of the cattles carcasses. The animals that failed inspection were then processed and distributed for human consumption. In addition the heads from cancereyed cows were chopped up, thrown away, and employees placed the heads from apparently healthy cows next to the cancer eye cow carcasses. The indictment says the switch and slaughter of uninspected cancereyed cows occurred during the inspectors lunch breaks when the plant was supposed to be shut down. The indicted are eveners jesse bay amerol jr. And will be better singleton of petaluma. Employees Felix Sandoval cabrera of santa rosa and gene core cara of petaluma. The indictment states the meat from 101 condition demmed cows and 79 cancereyed cows were processed and distributing. Maximum penalty if convicted could compete 20 years in prison. The recall that started on february the 8th affected Food Processors across the nation including nestles hot pockets. What put investigators on to the alleged scheme is when meat inspectors found two cattle heads that were infected with cancer, but there were no carcasses to go with those heads. Today jesse amara and eugene corda were in court to plead not guilty. One is out on bond, the other sp spent the afternoon here at the courthouse trying to raise the money for his release. Happening now, a big traffic mess. A major east bay roadway is still closed tonight after a truck crashed. What made everything so complicated was that the truck slammed into a power pole on concord boulevard. The force flipped the truck, splintered the pole, dropping power lines down to the street. 17 hub homes loss electricity. The truck driver, a contractor with pg e, was not hurt. Drivers are being detoured around the area. The roadway is not expected to open for four hours. A scary scene inside one of the most popular churches in the bay area. A man was stabbed at glide memorial this morning at the San Francisco church in the tenderloin. Police say a staff member was stabbed in the shoulder and is expected to survive. The attacker took off and jumped onto a muni bus. Sfpd officers arrested him. No word yet what sparked this attack. Following up on the 49ers game at levis stadium, police say a few celebrations did get out of hand and they made a few arrests. In all 12 people were arrested, most of those for public intoxication. Police arrested one person for threatening a Police Officer. Investigators gave no further details about what may have happened or what charges that suspect may now be facing. Perhaps a slight bit of good news when it comes to californias historic drought. Its not getting any worse. A live look right now. Pretty dry for the middle of the summer. The latest measurements indicate that Drought Conditions across the state have leveled off. At the same time, nearly 100 of the state is still experiencing severe Drought Conditions. As we look here at the drought monitor, the other astonishing thing is 58 of california remains in the exceptional drought. That is the worst category that is available. That will likely get worse throughout the next 24 to 36 days. The biggest threat were under with this drought most immediately is wildfire threat. Police say a driver in a mercedes ran a red light on ocala avenue and capital expressway last night, plowed into a van, and rolled causing a Chain Reaction with six other cars. The driver of that mercedes took off running leaving three of his friends trapped inside of his burning car. Some San Jose Police officers swung into action and got everyone out safely. They were doing the job that the public expects them to do and theyll go out and do it again tonight. Officers caught that driver after a short chase. A total of ten people were taken to local hospitals. Some with very serious injuries. The search on not only for a hitandrun driver but witnesses to the deadly accident. San jose police want to hear from anyone who may have been in this area of center road near balford drive around 10 00 last night. These near the golf course. Investigators say a driver hit and killed a 53yearold man. They say san juan winn was riding or walking his bike across the street. Someone driving a black or darkcolored car hit and killed him, then took off. Police have no suspects in this case. The protests in ferguson, missouri, are not letting up. Starting this afternoon, a show of greater force as National Guard troops move into place following another night of violent protests. Overnight the governor ordered the increased security to help quell the escalating violence and protect the Police Command center. With the presence of the National Guard the governor has lifted a midnight curfew hoping there will not be a repeat of last nights violence. Tonight we will ensure the safety of the citizens of ferguson. Reporter back in washington, president obama announced he is sending attorney general eric holder to ferguson on wednesday. I understand the passions and the anger that arise over the december of Michael Brown. Giving in to that anger by looting or carrying guns and even attacking the police only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos. It undermines rather than advances justice. Reporter the clashes that erupted sunday night are a familiar scene in ferguson. Police moving in with riot gear and tear gas as angry crowds challenge their authority. Further heightening tensions, the results of a preliminary autopsy report commissioned by the family shows Michael Bruin was shot multiple times. The fatal blow to the top of the head. At least six. Louis county medical Examiners Office has not released its reports but confirmed to nbc news that brown was shot more than once in the head and chest. Its one of the most blatant cases of sideshow activity the bay area has seen for some time. Two east bay freeways were closed down completely by drivers intent on pulling off wheelspinning thrills. This happened in oakland. Jodi hernandez is live at chp headquarters in oakland. This is such a dangerous activity, jodi. It really is and the sideshow action took place all over this city. From the port of oakland all the way to the toll plaza, including sections of interstate 580 behind me. The chp says it had deadly cons consequences. Youre looking at cell phone video taken in east oakland last night. One of multiple locations in the city where sideshows went down at the same time. Two of them on the freeway. The side show did close down the entire freeway. The participants about, in essence, their own traffic break, stopped traffic and began spinning doughnuts and popping wheelies. Reporter secs of i580 and 880 came too a stop as 150 cars and motorcycles took part. Chp said when officers arrived, one of the motorcycles took off for Castro Valley at 100 miles an hour with headlights off. Officers say he crashed into a car and died at the scene. I dont think they go out that evening thinking thats whats going to happen. But in the end, when youre going to drive at 100 miles an hour with no lights on and have ill regard for others, tragedies like this are going to occur. Reporter investigators are poring through video posted on social media to try to identify those involved. So far, no arrests. Many of the cars covered their license plates. Investigators are hoping the public will help. Were encouraging people to be good witnesses. If you see a sideshow, stay away from it, its dangerous. Contact the authorities. The Oakland Police department say theyve seen a recent uptick in sideshow activity, including a very similar sideshow that took place last weekend on interstate 880. Uc Berkeley Police say a 60yearold man died last night after falling from a Lookout Point on grisly peak boulevard. The man is identified as Donald Odwyer of berkeley. Witnesses say he slipped before he fell dune the hill. He was pronounced dead at the scene. In may you might recall a 22yearold man fell along the same road just a short distance away. We have a followup on a deadly shooting of a mentally ill teenager by a peninsula sheriffs deputy. The District Attorney says the deputy will not face criminal charge. June 3rd a family in Half Moon Bay called for help when an 18yearold girl refused to take her medicine for schizophrenia. Instead of the paramedics they requested a deputy arrived. The d. A. Says the girl grabbed a knife and chased him, refusing his orders to drop the weapon. The d. A. Condition concluded if the officer hadnt fired, he might have been killed by the girl. The sheriffs deputy Sheriffs Office offered condolences to the family. Pg e in court today pleading not guilty to criminal charges filed in a new indictment. The utility faces 28 federal charges for its role in the deadly 2010 san bruno pipeline fire. They clue obstruction of justice for lying to federal investigators and 27 counts of violating the National Gas Pipeline safety act. Pg e had no comments but city of san brawn know did. We believe its high time pg e cleaned up its act, that it understood and took responsibility, took full responsibility for the negligence, for the inappropriate operations and frankly for its malfeasance. If the utility is found guilty the city wants some of the fines to pay for insuring future pipeline safety. A sigh of relief for homeowners and firefighters in the santa cruz mountains. An abandoned motor home caught fire and it spread to surrounding brush around 10 00 this morning. Thankfully firefighters were able to quickly tackle this fire which burned less than an acre. The rest of the bay area, at least 50 of the bay remains under this overcast sky. That includes the peninsula, the east shore, San Francisco averaging 64, and also for the north bay. There is still some sun up in parts of the north bay. As we look south toward San Francisco you can see its clouded in. By far the best weather right now is across the south bay from the observatory, blue sky the Santa Clara Valley right now. The biggest difference we had today is the fact that temperatures were between 5 to 11 degrees colder outside. One of the key things that helped spark that off for these colder westerly winds that moved in across the bay, the second thing that not only brought us the cooler air but included cover as little disturbance in the upper levels of the atmosphere. Its not a big storm system. Just a bit of a ripple up at about 25,000 feet. Good enough to keep this fog layer going at the coast. Also some areas of drizzle as we head throughout tomorrow morning. As we take you in at 5 00, 6 00, 7 00, you can see there it is, its not much. Any time this computer model shows you any kind of green it is the possibility for some raindrops. Challenging morning for oakland firefighters. A bare house in east oakland caught fire around 5 00 a. M. A broken gas line and fallen power lines made things worse for the firefighters who took nearly five hours to finally put this out. They say it started in a camper parked nearby and quickly spread to this abandoned warehouse and two other buildings. Dirty tricks or sour grapes if you ask a company that collects trash in oakland. They claim city leaders are playing dirty politics. Waste management is viewing claiming oakland awarded its billiondollar waste contract too a Different Company under illegal circumstances. Waste management says the contract winner did not comply with the citys rules. Last week oakland chose rival california waste solutions, saying the new companys rate was cheap forepeople who live in oakland. Waste management is asking the court did repeal the citys decision. If the legal battle does not stop it the contract will take effect next summer. Something else costing more these days would be children. The expense of raising a child is up nearly 2 from last year. The grand total from birth to adultho adulthood, 245,000. Transportation and housing make up about half of that cost, 108,000.
