You might not be familiar with memorial glade, which is right here, and this is where the memorial is going to take place at 8 00 tonight. Take a look at video right now from isla vista last friday night and why there is a need for this event. Interesting, a uc berkeley graduate student, who did her undergraduate work at Uc Santa Barbara put this together. She happened to be near isla vista when the killings took place on friday night and on facebook she noticed that other uc campuses were doing memorials and she decided there needed to be a memorial at uc berkeley. Because there are a lot of alumni and because there are people here that know people at ucsb, it was important for them to have a place to come and grieve over the people who died and support each other and ucsb. And there have been some complaints from students and others that the focus has been on the person who did the killings friday night and not enough on the victims. Tonight its going to be about the victims. Its going to start at 8 00. Were going to be hearing from a number of speakers and then an open mike, anybody who wants to Say Something to express themselves will do so. Youre encouraged to bring your own candles. She passed away this morning at her home in North Carolina at the age of 86. Tonight, her death is touching people around the country. President obama is saluting maya angelou as one of our brightest lights. She awarded her the nations highest civilian honor. Jodi hernandez is live tonight in San Francisco where angelou lived. Reporter she very much considered San Francisco her home. And she considered glide here her home church and even brought Oprah Winfrey here one easter morning. They are trying to cope with someone that they loved dearly. Im hurting because she used to call me brother and i called her sister and so we had that kind of rapport with each other. It was a brother and sister relationship. Reporter the reverend Cecil Williams of glide Memorial Church is grieving for his sister, literary great and activist maya angelou who passed away this morning. She will always be an activist in our minds and in our hearts. Reporter williams and his wife were like family to angelou. She considered glide her church and San Francisco her home. Empowering and embracing countless people in the bay area. She did that for the people who come to our programs here at glide. She reached out to the addicts. She reached out to women who were victims of violence. Reporter angelou was supposed to speak last december but too sick to make the trip, she sent a video instead. Her words and song stealing the show. Reporter angelou continues her journey and her work and message will be felt forever. It will continue for years and years and years to come. Were going to make sure that that happens. Those messages for peace, to accept one another and, in her words, being more alike than unalike and yet the only bond that humanity has is each other. She was San Franciscos first black street car conductor. She was only 16 years old at the time. She wrote about it in her memoir i know why the caged bird sings. She wanted the job because she loved the uniform. Her family is marking the departure of the matriarch. Her son, guy johnson, lives in the Oakland Hills and he says that she was like a weaver, one who wove their lives together. She was one who believed in tolerance and acceptance and love. She lifts our hearts with her lessons and she will continue to do so. She certainly will. Johnson says they will have a Memorial Service in North Carolina. And because of that all of that, there is lots of grass and brush that now counties and cities and homeowner associations are trying to bring the goats in to eat.
