The fight over whether to parole the socalled pit low case rapist, Christopher Hubbard convicted of nearly 40 rapes and confessed to more than 100. But today a Santa Clara County judge decided the serial rapist will be paroled. The judge says hubbard will be moving from a Northern California prison to palmdale in Southern California in a matter of weeks. Nbc bay areas Damian Trujillo is live outside the Santa Clara County courthouse. Reporter the residents of palmdale face an uphill battle the at the courthouse. They tearfully asked the judge to reconsider. Today they lost that fight. The judge said Christopher Hubbard will be their neighbor. The Safety Task Force in Los Angeles County made the official announcement today. The pillow case rapist will be released. I am extremely disappointed with the courts decision to release serial rapist Christopher Hubbard into Los Angeles County. We took every legal action at our disposal to try to stop his return to our community. Reporter after his release, Christopher Hubbard will be watched round the clock for the first month in this home in unincorporated palmdale. Then police will monitor his every move via gps. But his new neighbors and rape victims from other cases fought a losing battle to keep hubbard and other violent sexual predators like him locked up indefinitely. Prison and institutions do not rehabilitate criminals, they make them better criminals. Reporter hubbard has been convicted of nearly 40 rapes. The chief in the l. A. County Sheriffs Office says hubbard has admitted to more than 100 rapes across the state and the deputy d. A. Doubts rapistipists hubbard can change their ways. Hubbard may well not be a reformed criminal and does pose risk. Reporter he was known as the pillow case rapist because he used a pill hoe to silence victims screams during attacks. In isnt the first time hes served time and been released and every time, he raped again. San jose has somewhat of a history with these violent sexual predators. You may remember a few years ago, a judge here ordered Scott Devries released to the grounds of soledad prison. Not long after that, carey averse spent time in san jose until this community ran him out of town. We are following a developing story in los angeles where an amber alert has prompted a desperate search for a 2yearold boy. Police say Abraham Vargas kidnapped his son edwin this morning. The boys mother has a restraining order against vargas for domestic violence. Officers say the toddlers mother was putting him in the car seat when vargas pushed the mother out of the way, jumped into the car and took off. The stolen minivan was found abandoned three miles away. Officials believe vargas could be on his way to mexico. This just in. A break in the case. Sunnyvale detectives say they tracked three teens who they were able to connect to a string of burglaries. Investigators say these men worked as a team to commit crimes in sunnyvale, redwood city, and fremont. In one case police say a teen got into a fight with a home owner in sunny veil and fired a handgun last week. No one was hurt. Investigators say another teen was arrested after committing a Home Invasion robbery in fremont. Detectives are contacting victims to help them recover stolen property. The hunt is on for a bold thief who uses a shotgun to rob his victims. Take a look at this surveillance video. A Security Camera caught the man with a mohawk inside morgan hills target last night. Police say he pulled up in his car in the stores parking lot, pointed a shotgun at a woman, and demanded her purse. The woman freaked out and ran away unharmed. But five minutes later, he used that exact same shotgun again at this subway down the street and got away with cash. Investigators say its one of the gutsiest crimes theyve ever seen. The fact that hes just going to go ahead and do what he wants, doesnt care for his safety or the safety of others, or his concealment makes him more dangerous, i believe. The man drove away in this white car that could be a chevy ha cavalier or dodge neon. The car had a black covering over the grille. The push to raise the minimum wage for some east bay workers. The group lift up oakland turned in thousands of signatures to the City Clerks Office today to get a minimum Wage Initiative on the november ballot. The group wants to increase the minimum wage from 8 per hour to 12. 25 per hour. Organizers say a higher minimum Wage Benefits more than just the employ employee. We want to see businesses thrive because their workers feel valued. And we want to see our whole Community Flourish because workers will spend more money in our local economy. The group also wants future pay increases tied to inflation and a guarantee of at least five annual sick days forll workers. The chamber of commerce says it wants higher about the sames for employees too but not all at once. You might want to stay up a little late tonight to catch a glimpse of a first of its kind meteor shower named the jury revolver. Scientists say there could be more than 200 meteors per hour. But no one really knows for sure, because this is the first time on earth anyone has ever seen it. Looking live over san jose, clear skies right now, nice for star gazing. Lets bring in chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, who is keeping tabs on the best viewing spots and the worst. Yes, and as we get a look right now were not going to hold back on this. The best time to view this is 11 00 p. M. Tonight to 1 00 a. M. On saturday. Known as the giraffe meteor shower or this very long scientific name, you pick whichever one you want to pronounce. You can see this is all going to happen as our planet passes through the debris field from comet 209p linear. What does it mean for us . The worst view is going to be at the coastline. If you can get away from the fog, your chances of seeing something is going to dramatically improve. Where do you want to look . You want to look towards the north. Youre going to have the best shot at seeing some of these meteors. Avoid the city lights and no telescopes because the meteors are going to be moving by way too fast. Telescope, not the best idea. How many, nasa scientists still are not sure if its going to be a hit or a dud. Lets go ahead and get a look at the best locations for viewing. We had pinpointed two of them. The first is chabot observatory. Its high enough up we think it will be over any fog line that will develop. Its going to be cool if youre headed there, 59 degrees. The other location would be livermore with 63 degrees for tonight. Well have detail in the full memorial day weekend forecast coming up. Some grisly but necessary work today in Half Moon Bay. Researchers gather to figure out what killed a humpback whale that washed up onshore this week. They have a possible answer that could raise new questions. Marianne favro joins us live from the coast at Half Moon Bay to explain. Reporter they have learned that this whale suffered some kind of trauma to her side. Researchers conducted the examination out here on the beach this afternoon. Now they are getting ready to tow her out to sea. Shes estimated to be a 1 to 2yearold humpback whale, about 25 feet long. Shes been floating near Half Moon Bay for three days. Today, researchers with the California Academy of sciences performed a necropsy, dissecting the whale to determine how she died. We did find evidence of trauma. We dont really know what the source of that trauma was. Reporter but they cant see definitively whether it was a boat strike that caused trauma to the whales side and right eye. One of the challenges of the exam was the whale washed up on her back, making it very difficult to examine her spine. She was also badly decomposed. Dozens came out to see the whale this afternoon, but most didnt stay long because of the stench. I have to tell you, it was really bad. One of the bay areas most beloved fast food chains is the target of a new customer lawsuit. An attorney for heady chang filed a lawsuit against Innout Burger yesterday. Chang, a uc berkeley grad, claims she was handed a cup of coffee so hot at the oakland store last year that she dropped it in her lap. She says she cried for help and asked an employee to call 911, but claims the employee told her that calling 911 would be against company policy. There are probably ten lawsuits at any particular day kicking around about hot coffee spills. Whats unusual here is the claim that the Innout Burger employees refused to call 911 after this woman was injured in their drivethrough. What do you say to the family of a person who saved your life . One woman had that chance today as she met the parents of a man who gave her the ultimate gift. The kidney recipient met the family of the man who gave the gift of life. They were strangers until today . Reporter yes, exactly. Strangers but they felt like they knew each other. Heres why. Faith waited 11 years before she finally got the news that she would get that lifesaving kidney transplant. It was here a few hours ago at Fort Mason Community Garden when she met the parents of that man who donated that kidney. 58yearold faith and her husband bobby embracing michael and kim choppy who flew here from phoenix. Their 24yearold son michael passed away and saved three lives as an organ donor in 2011. Faith said she had given up on the idea of a transplant. She was preparing for dialysis, which would have bought her maybe five or six years. Michaels mom says this meeting three years in the making has left her feeling both relieved and fulfilled. It was an honor to meet her. Even more special, that she also is in health care, and i think she truly understands, you know, how precious that gift is. He was somebody clearly who was about life and living and its really brought me a lot to appreciate, again, every single second you have. Reporter there are more than 110,000 people on the National Organ transplant waiting list. 20 of them listed in california. Heres a grim statistic. One of three waiting on that list will die because theres not enough organs available. According to the california transplant donor network, theres going to be a run walk on july 26th at Great America in santa clara. Also periodic areas of drizzle up against the immediate coastline. North bay, and this likely will be one of the hottest spots right around napa, 88 degrees. Well shoot for 89 in santa rosa. East bay, oakland, 74. As you head throughout orinda, lafayette, walnut creek, mid80s. Pleasanton shooting up to 87. As we head throughout the memorial day weekend, looks like the warmest weather is saturday. 89 expected in the south bay as we head throughout the peninsula. 83 by sundays forecast. Cooling off on monday as well to about 80. You can see for San Francisco, we think we could push up to 74 by sunday. And also monday with low 70s. The hottest location will still likely be the north bay as we head throughout sunday with 92 degrees. So real awesome forecast as we head throughout the next three days.
