Also not saying exactly what part of the fence the boy may have hopped, because of course they dont want to encourage anyone else to do the same thing. If the 15yearold did in fact survive as he claims, he would have had to endure freezing temperatures and a lack of oxygen for hours. Nearly impossible. Nbc bay areas cheryl heard caught up with a trauma doctor and a pilot and they cant believe a teenagers alive, but the key word is near hi impossible. Reporter thats right. Seeing is believing. Seeing that 15yearold walk around on a tarmac in hawaii is the only reason why the two experts i talked to believed that he is alive tonight after being stowed away on that plane. They also believe that age played a major factor in his survival. Truly is a miracle. Hard to understand, actually. Reporter Sutter Health trauma medical director says staying alive tucked away in a wheel well that looks similar to this one, more than 35,000 feet in the air, is a medical miracle. She says freezing temperatures and lack of oxygen made survival for that 15yearold on board that Hawaiian Airline night 45 almost impossible. Hypothermia causes severe metabolism derangements, alterations in physiology, particularly on rewarming those get worse, hypoxia, brain damage. Reporter officials in hawaii say the teen must have blacked out at 10,000 feet, which is a good thing, according to the doctor. Once he got up that high and that cold, he probably went into a state of suspended animation which is what probably helped him in survival, ultimately. Reporter according to the faa, there have been 94 flights involving 105 people who stowed away, worldwide, between 1947 and today. Of those 105 people, only 25 survived. This 15yearold is one of them. Dave morris is a test pilot that works with the vintage plane the memphis belle. He says the fact that this teen survived the flight is unbelievable. Ive only been up above 30,000 feet unpressurized once. That was in a glider. And you wear electric underwear and socks to stay warm. Special oxygen breathing, pressure breathing type of oxygen mask. A lot of preparation and stuff to be up there. Reporter the experts also tell me tonight, if youre thinking about doing this, dont. Because the results are almost always fatal. More details now on our top story. People try to stow away on planes more often than you might expect. As mentioned in the last 67 years, 105 people have stowed away on planes. Only 25 have survived. Until now, the last known person to have made it was in nigeria, africa, during a flight across that country in august. In 2002, a man flying from cuba to canada also survived that 1,700 might have mile journey. In 2000, another manmade it after a 4,000mile trip tahiti to los angeles. That means that the warriors are scrapping their initial plans to build an 18,000seat arena on the waterfront on piers 3032. That proposal drew sharp criticism from folks concerned that the 120 foot high arena would block views of the bay and cause traffic and environmental problems. The Golden State Warriors are keeping quiet tonight about their arena plans, instead focusing on tonights playoff game. Again, opponents of the initial waterfront plan say theyre delighted. What theyve done here is really move it back from the waterfront. Its still a location that brings people to a part of the city that is still pretty beautiful to enjoy.
