A deputy opened fire after the suspect allegedly rammed three squad cars. That suspect now in custody. Kimberly tere joining us at the Sheriffs Office in san jose with the details. Reporter the Sheriffs Office is still in the middle of this investigation, but i can certainly tell you what weve learned so far. The call came in about 5 30 this morning. A resident on croy road reported a suspicious car. The suspect sped down the driveway ramming his car into the patrol vehicles when they arrived. A deputy fired at least one shot toward the suspect whose car continued down the roadway, until it crashed in a ravine. The suspect took off. Based on information we had at the time, we believe that that suspect was armed and dangerous. What we did was we did a reverse 911 to all the residents in the area advising them to stay in their home. Lock their doors and shelter in place. Reporter the Sheriffs Emergency Response Team with assistance with many other Law Enforcement agencies moved into the heavily wooded neighborhood, and after a search that lasted several hours this morning, that suspect was found and arrested and no one was hurt. In some of the commotion, though, another man was actually detained. It turned out he was simply a neighbor witness to the incident, so he was subsequently released. Kimberly tere, nbc bay area news. Also in the south bay, a gunman is still on the loose right now after a double shooting. It happened in East San Jose about three hours ago. Police say the victims were both rushed to the hospital and they are expected to survive. Again, no arrests have been made. Police say theyre still investigating what led up to that shooting. This evening, police in an east bay city are on alert. Two people are dead after two separate shootings in less than 24 hours. A man was shot and killed at the interchange between interstate 80 and 580. Thursday night a woman was shot and killed. Police dont think the homicides are connected. What may surprise you, though, these are the first homicides in richmond in five months. There hasnt been this type of a time difference between cases in quite some time. Its been at least tenplus years. Richmond police havent made an arrest in either case and admit they dont have many leads. Police say Violent Crime has been down across the board in richmond. Theres a new development in the search for a Malaysia Airlines flight. Chinese authorities released a satellite image today of what could be debris from flight 370 in the indian ocean. The announcement hopes that the search could come to an end. Theyve still found no trace of the plane. More from perth, australia. Six planes took part in the search from here today. The crews that came back said visibility was actually very poor indeed. There was low clouds, but underneath the low clouds was a sea fog, which made searching for anything on the surface of that ocean very, very tough indeed. We did achieve a lot of the conditions in the area in coverage. We werent able to find any evidence of any wreckage, or Survival Equipment from the missing malaysian aircraft. Reporter lets for a moment look at the positive side. Reinforcements have arrived, particularly from china. Remember, twothirds of the passengers onboard that missing plane are from china. The chinese have sent three planes, three ships, plus a chinese ice breaker. They are being joined by two planes from japan by an australian warship, a british ship. The numbers involved are expanding. The crews are optimistic that they will find something. The question is, what. Overall, the search is not in its third week. So far it has found no evidence of the missing plane. The riddle of that plane remains. Nbc news, at the main search base here in perth, western australia. New at 5 00, reports tonight that the california dmv may have been hacked. It appears to have involved online payments for dmv related services from last august 2nd to january 31st of this year. The stolen data includes the card number, Expiration Date and threedigit Security Code printed on the back of cards. The exact number of stolen card numbers is not known, though. Banks and Credit Card Companies are alerting customers about the compromised cards. The dmv said theres no direct evidence of a breach, but theyve opened an investigation and is working with state and federal Law Enforcement as a precaution. Three teenagers arrested, one remaining in custody for the attempted burglary of a palo alto home. They spotted the teens last sunday night, no one was home at the time. Neighbors called police and they found two of the suspects on hamilton avenue. They found the third suspect at his home in sunny vail. Lopez is charged with burglary and conspiracy. The two other juvenile suspects were charged and released into their parents custody. Making the grade. Reporter it started early in life, eric was obsessed with legos and any other toy he could take apart then put back together. He was a very curious boy at a very young age, always asking why. Reporter that curiosity matured into a passion for fighting flu outbreaks. I thought, we have this urgent need for new flu medicine. Reporter what eric needed was a lab to do his research. And at his age it wasnt easy. But he eventually found a place here at the university of california san diego. This is the first one reporter with help from professors, eric developed an innovative approach with Computer Research with good oldfashioned lab work. Before long he made an impressive discovery. This is the protein. What i found is the small molecule right here. Reporter like a game of tetris, this can stop the flu virus from spreading once it enters the body. It looks like we have a pretty good start in what could be potential new treatments for influenza.
