In San Francisco maybe 100 protesters carried syrian and american flags. Some protesters are comparing military action in syria to the war in iraq. The u. S. Government sending out a political lie saying theres a country we should be away of. We see the disaster iraq was and the disaster our own economy is. These resources should be used for fair wages, housing, health care and education. There are rallies in san mateo and oakland. For the First Time Since the fire started near yosemite two weeks ago, the smoke has reached the valley. We talked to people in the valley tonight who told us that the smoke is so thick right now you cant even see half dome. Also today weve learned the heavy smoke has forced fire officials to ground all firefighting aircraft because of the low visibility. But there is some progress. Some evacuation orders have been lifted in communities north of the park. Some of the nearly 5,000 firefighters were allowed to go home over the weekend including strike teams from the bay area. The fire is now about 35 contained and more than 200,000 acres have burned so far, making it the fourth largest wildfire in state history. That smoke shifting there as a result of the rim fire. Reporter other campers like this heard Horror Stories from friends who tried to go camping in tahoe. They planned on staying four or five days, they wound up only spending one night because they got there and the smoke was much worse than they had hoped it would be. Reporter many local campgrounds say theyre booked solid for the holiday weekend. The family says they dont mind spending their dollars locally. Theres enough to go around. Convicted killer joseph nas sew claims he didnt get to present critical information during his trial in marin county this summer. Thats despite the fact he represented himself in court. Naso sent a letter to the nbc station in reno dated the day before he was found guilty on four counts of murder. It claims one of his alleged victims could have been killed by a pimp. He also claims the prostitute who was killed had, quote, unknown enemies. He points out other possible suspects, he never proclaimed his innocence either. The killings happened in the 1990s in california. In oakland a shooting inside a Jack London Square nightclub left one man dead. The shooting happened about 1 30 at club anton on third street. People inside the club at the time say some sort of fight broke out. Then came the gunfire. Officers say when they got there they found a man who had been shot, pronounced dead at the scene. Police have interviewed several witnesses. A 14yearold boy is behind bars tonight accused of sexual assault. Alameda police say the assault happened at ruby bridges elementary school. They tell us the boy approached a female student in the School Bathroom and allegedly assaulted her yesterday after. He took off but Police Tracked him down a few blocks away. The man police call a person of interest spoke to nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez from jail. Reporter nbc bay area paid a jailhouse interest to the man police are calling a person of interest in the killing of sandra coke, the investigator for the federal Defenders Office who disappeared from her oakland home nearly three weeks ago, found dead in vacaville three days later. Her former boyfriend randy alana told us hes grief stricken, quote, sandra meant the world to me. Alana who has a lengthy criminal past including rape, kidnapping and manslaughter convictions says hes an easy target in the case. While he wouldnt answer whether he had anything to do with cokes disappearance, he claims coke had told him she was getting unwanted phone calls before she disappeared and that someone had slashed her tenants tires. The first thing a da looks like is a sus spent being inconsistent, dishonest in their statement, but also are they deflecting attention from themselves and trying to put it on someone else . Thats a classic situation that a prosecutor is going to say is consciousness of guilt. Reporter legal analyst Stephen Clark says alana clearly wants to put his own spin on things as police work to build their case against him. Alana remains in custody on a parole violation but has not been charged in cokes killing. Remember dna evidence, cell phone evidence, that takes time to process. While hes in custody, time is on the side of the district attorneys office, and theyre going to use that time to try to build an airtight case. Tonight nbc bay area learned alana and coke had been butting heads for months over the disappearance of cokes dog. Sources say coke says alana used the dog to extort 1,000 from her. She reportedly gave him the money but that didnt get the dog back. It was a par role violation. He had gotten out of jail three days before coke disappeared. Hes got motive, hes got opportunity and hes got a very long criminal history. Reporter when asked why he had cokes keys and credit card on him when he was arrested, he replied, quote, how many things of mine do you think sandra has. When the salt gets here, its so concentrated that literally nothing can survive. Reporter among these vineyards, 1,000 acre salt flats left over from salt plants in the 50s sit like moon scrapes. This pond could create a toxic mess and actually harm San Francisco bay. Reporter a 20year effort is under way here to restore what was once 10,000 acres of thriving marsh lands. Today the Sonoma County water agency celebrated the completion of a pipeline that will carry recycled water to these flats. Through the vineyards and the roadways down to this pond, to be able to use it to be bringing back this pond for wildlife purposes. Reporter the water will begin its journey eight miles away at the Sonoma County Water Treatment plant. It will turn water into wine. I can produce top quality grapes, both quantity and quality, grow a balanced vine and know the water is there. Reporter the water is expected to begin flowing in the fall.
