Police have arrested a man for a shooting saturday that left a San Jose State University student dead. Investigators say an officer arrested 23yearold Johnny Lozano for violating his parole by carrying a loaded weapon. After officer checked the description of the shooter in saturdays murder this, man was charged for that killing. 19yearold Nursing StudentKimberly Chico was shot to death while in the passenger seat of a car in downtown san jose early saturday morning. She was planning to return to classes later this month. Her killing marks san joses 30th homicide of the year. Its been a tense day in the quiet suburbs of sunnyvale. A neighborhood was shut down because of a swat team standoff. This happened on cochella avenue near San Miguel Elementary School in sunnyvale. Ultimately two people were found dead inside of a home. Nbc bay areas marian favro joins us at the scene of the crime with the details. Marion, are the streets still shut down where you are . Reporter just one of the main streets out here is still shut down. Investigators are still out here processing the crime scene, raj. They were called out to the home this morning after they received a very disturbing phone call. Shortly after 8 00 this morning, Police Received a call from a man claiming he had killed someone inside this home on san pedro street in sunnyvale. Police, including swat team members, surrounded the area. But the man refused to come out. So the swat team made its move, using a bull horn to order him to come out. Reporter police fired at least seven shots. After numerous attempts via phone calls and bull horns, there was no response at the residence. So the swat Team Approached the residence, attempted to make contact with the individual inside the residence. At that point the individual charged the officers with a weapon, and the officers were forced to open fire and to shoot the individual. Reporter the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later discovered the body of an adult woman inside the home. Several homes were evacuated during the standoff. Dave sharp has lived here 50 years and was surprised to see a swat team outside his home this morning. I watched them. They got on the back of the truck, a vehicle, and then they went down to the house. I saw them unload. And about half hour later or maybe 15 minutes later i heard pop pop pop pop. Reporter officers spent the day processing the scene. One investigator climbed a fire ladder to take aerial photos where the shooting happened. Neighbors say a couple had lived in the home at least eight years, and they rarely ever heard them argue. Investigators are not releasing the names of the two people that were killed. They are also not telling us whether they were husband and wife, although neighbors here tell us that they were married. Police are also not telling us how the woman was killed. Despite outcry from some city leaders, the gold club in downtown san jose will open without any new restrictions. A brandnew south bay library is caught in a fungd fight between the city and county of santa clara. Its located behind the river shopping center. The city set aside more than 19 million bucks for the library, 11 million has already been spent. Construction is actually almost done but the library sits empty. Santa clara county says the city is spending redevelopment money on the library when under state law that money should go to schools and special districts. Additionally, the county won a court order freezing the citys redevelopment assets, library included. Library supporters are rallying at the construction site on sunday morning in hopes the library will be allowed to open as planned. Vandalizing a church is a felony offense. John the Baptist Catholic church in milpedus yesterday morning. Just a few blocks from the great mall. They say he broke benches, statues and ornamental items causing about 20,000 in damage. Most of the damage has since been cleaned up. Police arrested 30yearold michael vickroy. No word on the motive. Negotiators for bart and its unions are back at the table today trying to reach a deal before a sunday midnight deadline that could signal another bart strike. Its the first time for labor talks since Governor Brown steppeded in last week and averted a strike which kept trains rolling for now. Testimony before a state panel commissioned by the governor to see if he should order a cooling off period revealed both sides are still looking at 100 million difference in trying to reach a deem. The unions say that number is smaller. The bart spokesperson says it depends on the length of the deal. It really depends how you calculate the numbers. If you want to aplight numbers to the entire district youre going to get one number. If youre going to apply for four years youll get another number then three years. At the end of the day whatever the number is, it shows there is still a great difference, tens of millions of dollars no matter how you look at it, no matter how many years. A spokesperson for the atu says they hope to avoid having a cooling off period by getting a deal done. On sunday the governor could order that cooling off period which would last for 60 days and keep trains running until october. Now, if no deal is done and no cooling off period is ordered, a strike could happen early monday morning. Repairs on the new eastern span of the bay bridge are getting a little more concrete. Literally. In fact, today crews began pouring 164 cubic yards of concrete on the new span. The concrete is part of emergency repairs due to the recent discovery of dozens of faulty bolts. It will partially encase an elaborate system of steel strands used to secure custommade saddles being built to replace those bolts. While the steel saddles are the top of the fix, exerting the exact same clamping force that the steel bolts were supposed to do, at the bottom of the fix theyre pouring the first layer of concrete. Cal tran says the work on the bridge is scheduled to be done around december 10th. Its one of the most popular weekends of the year in San Francisco. Golden gate park is hosting the outside lands music festival. Sir paul mccarnie mccartney will take the stage. One stage is entirely solar powered. Were at the command post here in the city of beaumont which is about 30 miles to the west of palm springs, California Department of forestry units about 1,000 firefighters now. We just heard word that there are four firefighters who were injured, in this blaze that started yesterday. Were told those were not lifethreatening injuries. Theyll be off for 72 hours then back on later this week. Once again, they have about 11,000 acres that have burned. 10 containment. Theyre hoping to get more containment tonight. But theres still plenty of wind and plenty of terrain to battle. Along the tiny Riverside County community of cabezon, smoke and flame in the distance, progressing slowly. Garden hoses at full throttle. I have friends that live over in the corner over here. Looks like theyre really in trouble. Reporter 10,000 acres have burned thus far over a sixmile stretch of the san gregonio pass. Scores of homes damaged or destroyed. 1,000 firefighters on hand from throughout Southern California, bulldozers have been brought in to help stop the spread. Containment thus far just at 10 . Reporter fire officials called it a mirror image of the desly esperanza fire of 2006 that killed five firefighters. This fire even without the aid of a santa ana wind condition was startling in its speed and spread. Fire officials dont have a number on the homes lost, saying its between 10 and 30. And other homes are still threatened. An evacuate warning has been given to the snow Creek Village area at the head of the fire. I would also add that the u. S. Forest service are evacuating two campgrounds off the Black Mountain road as being imminently threatened. They hope experimental immunotherapy could help desensitize severely affected patients. They take the patch and impregnate it with peanut powder that will leach out on your skin. So theyre just replacing a patch every day just like you would in immunotherapy.
