Absolutely not true. Im rory devine, nbc bay area. We just got word that the San Diego County Sheriffs Department is going to hold a News Conference with the family of the missing children. Some relatives at 5 30. Well are bring you is the latest at 6 00. That text alert from the chp late last night caught many people off guard. How does it work . Why was it so loud and can we opt out. Kris sanchez joins us from san jose. This was the first time i received a text alert from the chp. In fact, that text did not come from the chp. It came from ctia, the wireless trade organization that manages the wireless Emergency Alerts. Its very confusing right now. Youre not the only one who has questions about it. We found a lot of folks didnt know this was a possibility until the phones started blowing up around 11 00 last night. My phone went off last night. Yeah, it caught me by surprise. Even chp officer chris was caught off guard by the loud buzzing alarm coming from his cell phone when the san diego Sheriffs Department requested its amber alert for two abducted children. Through the wr wireless Emergency Alerts program, amber alerts are now sent to all cell phones whether you sign up for the alerts or not. It worked. It we should have done that from the beginning when phones were in the system. On social media some folks were put off asking the ctia how to opt out. Others asking that the alerts be easier to access and more informative. It can be used also by Government Agencies to provide information in a disaster and by the office of the president. If its being used for that purpose, i guess it should go to everyone. It would be valuable information to know if there was a disaster. Now, lee miller did not get an alert on his cell phone, though his girlfriend did. Hes going to try to figure out why because as i mentioned, amber alerts are not the only kind of emergency information that are going to be coming through that wireless Emergency Alert system. Wea, whatever we end up calling it as we get more familiar with it. The chp says please remind folks even if you were inconvenienced and woken from your sleep, remember what the bottom line of the program is for, to get children back home where they need to be, especially when theyre in a dangerous situation. As of our last report, those children taken from their home are still miss penguin kris sanchez, nbc bay area in us.
