to stay here. but they also stress that there's a reason they're here in justin herman plaza in the financial district. they say their message would be diluted if they had to go to some park somewhere in the suburbs instead. well, tonight we know the identity of a man shot and killed after pointing a gun at berkeley police inside a computer lab yesterday. he is 32-year-old christopher travis, an undergrad student who recently transferred to berkeley. jodi hernandez is live at uc berkeley where the campus remains tense. >> reporter: janelle, people here are very shaken by what happened here at the business school yesterday afternoon. tonight we are learning the man, the suspect, may have had a background in protecting others. police say he died pointing a gun at them. >> there's supposed to be class all day today. >> reporter: computer lab manager phil mahoney showed us the lab classroom where uc police shot and killed an arm the student after they say he pointed a loaded semi-automatic gun at them yesterday afternoon as over the students hit the ground. police say surveillance video caught the entire ordeal. >> he pulled the weapon out of a backpack. he was pointing it at one of our officers. the officers were giving him the command to drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the weapon. he did not do so. >> reporter: police have identified the student as 32-year-old christopher travis, a business school undergraduate who had just transferred to cal this fall. and they say he may have had experience as a security guard. >> there's certainly more that we can stand to learn. >> this is really such a tragedy. and my heart goes out to the family of this young man. >> reporter: this morning the chancellor, teen and police chief met with business school students to brief them on what happened. they say the quick actions of the staff member who reported seeing the gun in the student's backpack, as well as the response of police, may have saved lives. >> while it played out tragically, one can only imagine how much more tragically it might have played out, bringing a firearm onto school grounds and exposing it is a very serious act. >> just to think that other people could have been hurt, me or my friends, co-workers. >> reporter: those who work in and use the lab say they are shaken by what happened. they're mourning the loss of a fellow student and want to know why he came to campus armed. >> we were talking to friends, what was the real intention if he was carrying a gun? >> reporter: again, uc police are still trying to piece all of this together, trying to figure out what led the man to come to campus armed. they say that he was reportedly acting differently in recent days. the captain told us the act that happened yesterday is the act of a very troubled man. >> we'll have more on this story on our 6:00 newscast as well. today a union city gang member was convicted of trying to kill an undercover fremont police officer. andrew barientos could face 50 years to life in prison for shooting the officer during a botched arrest in east oakland last year. he shot officer todd young twice in the lower body when the officer chased after him. defense attorneys say barientos didn't know young was a police officers, he was undercover. he'll be sentenced on december 16th. one of the fbi's most wanted suspects, an animal rights activist accused of two bay area bombings, may be in eastern massachusetts tonight. the fbi's wanted poster for daniel san diego shows him in an original photo and doctored photos to depict what he'd look like if he tried to disdevise his features. america's most wanted profiled san diego generating a tip he may be in northampton, massachusetts. in a news conference, fbi agents reminded the public there is a $250 thousand reward for position leading to his arrest. he's accused of planting pipe bombs at the biotech firm chiron in emeryville and detonating a bomb at the shaklee nutrition company in pleasanton in 2003. no one was injured in either bombing. >> the tip that came into our san francisco office as a result of publicity on "america's most wanted" led to our san francisco office to be credible and viable, one we've been pursuing since that tip came in. >> the fbi says it can't divulge any more information about the tip other than to say it's a recent one. they also say san diego might be going by his middle name, andreas. the companies were reportedly targeted for their ties to research firms which experimented with animals. it's been called the worst trailer park in san jose and those living there showed how bad it is. 80 community leaders joined residents to demand changes at the western trailer park which is on monterey highway in south san jose. look at the pictures from last year's rainy season. raw sewage spewing from pipes which then ran into their homes. residents say management is ignoring their concerns. the prop doctor managers say they spent at least $15,000 trying to fix the problem before the rain sets in this year. >> we don't have any sewer issues at all. if we had had sewer issues in the past, we've resolved them right away. >> neighbors shared their testimonies and provided media access to several trailers in attempt to expose the conditions to residents. a youth suicide and self-harming behaviors workshop was held in san mateo today. more than 45 community leaders, teachers, counselors and police officers focused on the prevention of youth violence. each day, 11 youths die by suicide in the u.s. and the rate of youths with self-harming behaviors is increasing. the workshop gave tips to parents on what signs to look out for. >> looking for any kind of changes use of what's normal for their child is worth asking about. and again, it's -- that practice is good because what it does is it sets up a norm for having a conversation with your kids about how they're doing. before there's a problem, before there's a crisis. >> officials say effective intervention can prevent both suicide and self-harming behaviors. still to come here at 5:00, compromise. how the personal information of millions of californians is now in the wrong hands. a criminal investigation is unfolding at the white house after shots were fired at the mansion. and good evening. i'm chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. a few clouds moving in right now in san francisco. and that's a sign of things to come as we head throughout tomorrow. look at that cloud cover building throughout the south bay. another cold night. we'll talk about these two storms we're tracking and when rain arrives in a few minutes. she wants to see the ending, she has to keep pedaling. >> a new spin on motivation. how parents are encouraging theirews ayto.inak whole new wa. is a small one near city hall. also in the financial district at the bank of america, san francisco police continue to make arrests for the occupiers that were taking over that bank. so a lot of things happening near the justin herman plaza and the financial district. we'll stay on this story throughout the newscast and at 6:00. in southern california student protesters got out of hand at long best of state outside the csu board of trustees meeting. even though they were protesting another tuition hike trustees approved a 9% increase. police had to use pepper spray to push some of the students back. three were taken into custody. board officials say the fee increases won't be needed if the state can provide an extra $140 million in funding which is looking unlikely after the state's independent financial experts predicted today a $13 billion budget shortfall in the next 18 months. tomorrow marks a crucial day in the ongoing legal battle over same-sex marriage in california. that's when the state supreme court tomorrow is set to decide if supporters of prop 8 can continue to defend the ban. both the governor and attorney general have refused to defend the ban. now it's up to the court to decide if prop 8 backers have the legal standing to intervene. a federal judge has already declared the voter-approved ban unconstitutional. if the supreme court decides the backers cannot defend the ban on their own it could mean the end of the case and pave the way for same-sex marriages to resume in california. a burglary call turns into a drug bust in san jose. police stumble into a pot-growing operation. they're trying to track down the renter of a rental home. san jose police say they caught the pair inside a home on the 600 block of gerardo drive. this is exclusive video inside the home. police say the renter outfitted almost every room with special lighting and ventilation to grow the illegal marijuana. the homeowner told nbc bay area news he's shocked and says his tenants never missed a monthly payment and kept up the property. a startling discovery at the white house which is now a crime scene. bullet holes. the secret service announced the arrest of 21-year-old oscar ortega hernandez, a drifter from idaho who's accused of shooting his rifle at the white house last week. today investigators were gathering evidence at the executive mansion. a day after noticing at least two bullets. one of them hit a bullet-proof window on the second floor of the white house near president obama's recess debs. the first family was traveling at the time of shooting last week. the investigation stems from friday night when agents heard gunfire. minutes later they found an abandoned car belonging to ortega hernandez with a semi-automatic rifle inside. the motive is unknown. a key witness in one of the alleged sexual assaults at penn state says he did tell police of the incident in 2002 but police disagree. former graduate assistant, now assistant head coach, mike mcqueary told friends in an e-mail he went to police after fining former defensive coordinator jerry sandusky allegedly sexually assaulting a child in a locker room. in the e-mail mcqueary doesn't specify which police department he told. the state college police chief says his department never received any reports of child sex abuse from him. mcqueary is under fire for not doing more. one stolen desktop computer has millions of people on alert. the cent sutter medical center informed millions about the security breach. names and addresses of more than 3 million clients of sutter medical, health records of approximately 1 million patients was also on the computer which was stolen last month at one of the foundation's sacramento offices. sutter says it's speeding up efforts to encrypt data but the information on the stolen computer had not been encrypted. health watch, a fight between parents and their kids. how can you get them to watch less tv and drop. then eventually some showers coming back into the mix. we'll look at a second storm system as we head throughout your weekend with more rain and also another reinforcing shot of some colder air. right now in the satellite radar picture, no rainfall in view. we have a little bit of cloud cover associated with a storm starting to move across eureka. the storm is not in view yet right here. but it is on our wider view. what you're going to find is cold air trapped here. cumulus clouds starting to drop down. air that could drop numbers 10 to 20 degrees across the bay area. that system pushing down the next 48 hours. while it has rainfall associated with it i do think the temperature drop is what most of you are going to experience throughout thursday and friday. we're looking at showers here as we head throughout thursday. temperatures in the 60s inland. throughout friday, much colder and still showers staying in the mix. let's get your timing on this. tomorrow morning we'll start with cloud cover for the coastline, the peninsula, east bay, and south bay. then as we head throughout 6:00 p.m., we're picking up on showers. what you'll see is the rainfall is not very consistent. it's going to be hit and miss here for thursday. then for friday we'll see the same scenario. the clouds, scattered showers, and the cold air staying with us throughout friday's forecast. another large storm system, a trace of rainfall to right around .1 inches from the north bay to the south bay. some of our interior sections may actually not pick up anything when it comes to this storm
