After a threehour standoff involving hostages, the s. W. A. T. People shot and killed the gunman. This afternoon the fbi identified him. He is 29yearold omar mateen. The pulse nightclub behind us an active crime scene right now, less than 24 hours after the deadliest mass shooting in u. S. History. A makeshift morgue has been set up alongside the popular gay night spot as investigators continue their work here. Oh, my god. People are getting shot, dude. Witnesses describe it as a slaughter. Bang bang, screaming and loud noise. And the person next to me was shot. Reporter 50 murdered, 50 more wounded during an overnight killing spree at the pulse nightclub. I thought i was going to die. I didnt know if i was going to come out alive. Reporter dozens held hostage three hours or more until a s. W. A. T. Team moved in. The suspect killed during a shootout with police. Investigators say 29yearold omar mateen was the trigger man, described as a domestic terrorist by federal agent and we know he was questioned in 2013 and again in 2014 by the fbi over possible terrorist ties. Its been reported that mateen made calls to 911 this morning in which he stated his allegiance to the leader of the islamic state. Reporter we are told he mentioned the Boston Marathon bombing just before the attack. As the Investigation Continues at this popular gay nightclub, mateens family tells nbc news, he may have carried out the most deadly mass killing after seeing two men kiss in miami two weeks earlier as police and federal agents scramble to find out why and how it happened they must begin the grisly task of identifying the victims. A staggering blow to a city and nation now mourning so many lost. Federal agents say that mateen was armed with a handgun and assault rifle. So far, they include Edward Sotomayor jr. , stanley almodovar, luis omar ocasiocapo, juan guerrero, eric ortiz rivera, Peter Gonzalez cruz and luis veelma. The president spoke about the massacre in orlando and called it an act of terror and hate. What is clear is he was a person filled with hatred. The executive director of what is known as the glbt center of florida says while the community is heart broken it must come together in support of the victims. When they said 50, my heart left my body we need to rally around the family and friends of those killed today and the people that are in the hospital right now. He is organizing a vigil for the shooting victims tonight at 8 00 market and castro streets. They will honor and remember the victims and recommit themselves to fight hate. A local Law Enforcement immediately responding to the tragedy in orlando. Also thinking ahead. With the San Francisco pride parade taking place two weeks from ago, we are joined and this murder targeted the Gay Community. That will have the San FranciscoPolice Department on high alert for the parade coming up. Yeah. I spoke to sfpd and they said there is going to be an increase in foot patrol in response to what happened in orlando. I spoke to organizers with the sf pride festival and say there is no plans to cancel the event. San Francisco Police will be highly visible following the tragedy in orlando. This sergeant said the increase in foot patrols will not only be in the castro. Throughout the city, anywhere where where we may have large gathering, including transit hubs and shopping centers. Reporter two weeks from today, San Francisco will hold the annual lgbt pride festival. An event that brings out more than 1 Million People annually. The idea of it being a target in light of the events in orlando is something sfpd is aware of. We have an increase of security. Obviously we will not discuss specifics but we do Everything Possible to make sure it is a fun event. Reporter sam singer says the annual event has an even bigger purpose. It is both important for the Lgbt Community and democracy that the event move forward. Reporter the spokesperson added he planned to work closely with Law Enforcement in the lead up to the festival. The festival is set to take place june 26th. Live in the castro, nbc bay area news. It appears another attack was planned in Southern California today. Officers in santa monica arrested this man, james howell of indiana. Police say howell originally told them he was waiting for a friend but then officers searched his car and found three rifles, ammunition and ingredients to make explosives. The police chief said he told one officer he wanted to do harm at the gay pride event. They say this arrest does not appear to be linked to the massacre in orlando. In the wake of the shooting an urgent plea for blood donations. Hundreds of people turned out at blood banks across the orlando area. So many that blood banks were overwhelmed and had to ask donors to schedule an appointment over the next few days. Mobile vans dispatched to help but theres an outcry among the Lgbt Community because a federal ban prevents most gay men from donating blood. They are banned unless they abstain for sex with men for at least a year. As you may imagine theres been an massive outpouring of support across social media. The executive director of the Bay Area Council on americanislamic relations says the Lgbt Community reached out to care with messages of solidarity. The Muslim Community and everyone we have heard from today has been focused standing in solidarity with the victims of the Lgbt Community. We believe no one should be the victim of a hate crime based on their race, religion, Sexual Orientation or otherwise. Our focus today is on how all of us are impacted by this violence. He said the people of islam have no tolerance for violence of any kind and said the shooter does not represent muslims or their faith in any way. This is the first week of ramadan.
