This is new video into our newsroom. The farad fire has burned 600 acres. Its only 5 contained. Mike, i called the chp moments ago. Theyre up against a tough one with this fire. This fire is raging and both of us know that i80 is very popular this time of year. I just drove that route coming back from reno. If it happened now, i wouldnt be able to get home for tomorrows shift. Fortunately were here to tell you whats going on. Heres bait, rigthe bay, right . I80 comes across the bay. Most folks from here will take i80 here, and for my family we traditionally cut down 89 toward tahoe city. Thats where alpine and squaw valley are. You know that route. As far as i know, as of now, interstate 80 is clear here, but truckee goes a little bit north of here and i80 right there. From what i understand, its just past that 89 junction all the way over to the nevada state line. That whole section of i80 is affected by this brush fire because of all that smoke across. It cuts across 267. This is from chp. You see the calfire truck and thats the only vehicle you see. As you pan across, the smoke coming off this area, smoldering just off interstate 80. Again, this is just past 89, from what i understand. That is the portion that is closed. Access to tahoe city may be limit, and in fact, may be shut down over the course of today as they fight this fire. As there has been evidence, laura, that theyre denying access over the course of this fire. We have updates on our web page as well. Well check traffic conditions and those freeways as well. Back to you. Well, back here in the bay area, fire crews wrapping up their battle against a brush fire thats too close to home in the south bay. We set up nbc bay area sky ranger this morning to give you a better aerial perspective of the wildfire. This is video from a few hours ago. You can see almost all the fire itself is out. Calfire tells us 70 acres burned and they have a fire line around 80 of the burn area. What firefighters are focusing on right now is mopup. In other words, smothering the hot spots and removing dry brush that can reignite. Calfire still does not know what caused this fire, but headquarters in morgan hill tells me on the phone this morning that the investigation will certainly include this burnedout porsche convertible that was abandoned on the side of san filipe road. Its not clear if it was involved in an accident, if it was stolen and set on fire or if Something Else happened. I also put a call in to local Law Enforcement to see what they might know. The fire started yesterday afternoon. The terrain here is very rugged and flammable. Calfire was afraid the fire could spread to 500 acres. Thats why they brought in 150 firefighters, four airplanes and two helicopters. They also evacuated a number of people who live in these foothills of san jose. Those people have since been allowed to go back home. As i mentioned earlier, calfire seems to have succeeded at keeping this fire at bay to just around 700 acres. Bob redell, nbc bay area news. As we mentioned, california steeped in fire danger right now, and the number of vicious wildfires continues to grow. Heres a look at a map right now as firefighters are actively engaged in fighting more than a dozen fires burning up and down the golden state. Those icons that are in red right now are active fires. At least 38 structures, including some homes, have been destroyed. Four people have also been injured in the wall fire. It is currently about 45 contained. As you well know, fire danger very high with all the brush and grass from our wet winter. It would be nice to get some cooler temperatures just to kind of help firefighters out. We really need this period right now as we take a live look outside. San jose on the left side of your screen. San rafael nice and clear on the right. There are some cooler temperatures until the temperatures spike again. Thats right, we only have a small window of cooler temperatures. Truckee looks good here, but we know that wildfire is nearby. Temperature is at 70 cdegrees. Where were looking right now, just to the north of lake tahoe and also to the east of truckee, thats where we have the problem of the very large wildfire right now, once again, at 600 acres. As we go into the next couple of days, we are still going to be tracking the low humidity and temperatures ranging anywhere from 46 degrees in the morning to 84 degrees in the afternoon. So during those time frames when the temperatures are the highest, the humidity will be the lowest and the winds picking up, too. As we bring it back home and get a look at the south bay from mt. Hamilton, all clear and all dry, but our temperatures are definitely cooler, and thats what well have for today and tomorrow, a little bit of ofa break before were expecting triple digit temperatures on the weekend. Knew and when he knew it. The New York Times reports that before taking a meeting with a russian lawyer tied to the kremlin who he believed could offer damaging information about hillary clinton, donald trump jr. Was informed in an email that the material was part of a russian government effort to help his fathers candidacy. That email was sent by this man, rob goldstone, a publicist who helped set up that june 26th meeting, a meeting that was also attended by both the president s soninlaw Jared Kushner and thencampaign chairman paul manafort. Late monday, trump jr. Let his newly hired attorney do the talking. In a statement to nbc news, the lawyer wrote, in my view, this is much ado about nothing. Don jr. Had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed, adding, the bottom line is that don jr. Did nothing wrong. But the top democrat on the House Intelligence Committee disagrees. In fact, east bay mud officials could decide whether they move forward with those water fee hikes which actually go back to folks consuming too much water during the drought. They will be gathering information on exactly who will be affected and how much those customers will be paying. Now, were talking about 1. 4 million customers across alameda and costa contra counties and there will be a 9 increase over a twoyear span. This year if they move on it, it would be a 4. 34 increase, and in the next year, a 4. 63 increase. According to officials of east bay mud, the average household used 60 gallons of water less per day. In short the money from the water bill hike would set to f offset those losses as well as pay to replace and fix infrastructure. We talked to folks in walnut creek about those proposed changes. This is just another example to my way of thinking of the california government which is out of control, messing up badly, and we pay for it. Its only 5 and if its going to help infrastructure, thats okay. As long as its going toward infrastructure. I think its okay. Look at all the expense theyre going to have redoing piping and everything thats been ruined. Reporter now, heres a statement that east bay mud sent to me, or part of a statement. They said, quote, we are fortunate that we have full reservoirs, thanks to nature and amazing conservation by customers. However, it takes more than full reservoirs to serve customers. We need pipes and pumps to deliver water every day. Its that infrastructure that requires our efforts today. That Public Meeting in oakland will take place at 1 00 p. M.
