Who has been bringing development after development on the story. Jaxon phoner laura map on cgc let s give you a closer look at where this is happening it s unfolding at 320 san bruno avenue at what s believed to be a ups San Francisco customer center. That s at utah street and potrero avenue you can actually see this building from highway 101. Boxes nbc bay area s pete suratos is live at the scene what are you another dramatic scene taking places just a few minutes ago that we brought you live nbc bay area s skyranger capurd this video of swat teams on the roof. Being very cautious and searching for any more gunman. adlib laura live hospital a look at sf General Hospital. Adlib boxes nbc bay area s cheryl hurd is live on the ground at that ups facility cheryl what s happening there right now. Wanna take you back out live you re looking at live pictures from nbc bay area sky ranger overhead. Ad lib scene take vo let s show you more pictures from earlier San Francisco police continued their investigation this morning. You know, were just learning right now, laura, that theres going to be a press conference ns o San Francisco police at 11 30 so more details on the status of the investigation then an with the pictures that youre looking at right now are dingle evacuating the building, actually being able to leave. Dozens and dozens of them evacuated from the scene. This was about an hour ago. Youll notice that many of them were wearing the brown uniforms, the ups uniforms. We also saw people standing on the roof of the ups building with their arms up. You know, we had mentioned that one of the victims from the ups shootings actually walked themselves to San Francisco general. Its not too far from this area, an air that thats been cordoned off and congested with traffic in that area to keep people away. Lets check in with mike inouye, a real look at traffic in that area. Its so close there, mike. Reporter you see it right next to the ups building. Some people dont realize its the facility, big gray building with the the clock on corner and in towards San Francisco and then continuing on 101 until it turns east around 80 getting on to the bay bridge. Its right there before you make the hospital curve area. So lets get you located. Caesar chavez is in the area and thats the off ramp that youll try to use if you want to get up in that area. Avoid the immediate area, and well talk about that because of closures. The vermont street off ramp is closed so Caesar Chavez just on the bottom of the screen here. Police enforcement officers are saying to avoid area between 15th and 18th, and from portero over to vermont including the area underneath high what 101 for 17. Thats a pretty good area right around this portion. Now, 280 stays clear of all this activity, and some folks that used that, but were going to warn folks and talk about the area cordoned off and muni continuing for these lines, 9r, 22, 33 and 55 and also remember we have a midday giants game, and so that will start to see more crowds headed up to that area and some folks might be using 280 assin a alternate to 101 adding more traffic. This is a 12 45 game but folks like to get in towards that area before that game so thats going laniean surface street traffic coming no that area and definitely 280. Folks heading into the area as well. No doubt this has had impact on a lot of people trying to finduct their daytoday business in the area. One of those folks Xavier Lanier who joins us on the phone. Just trying to drop off his child at the school at the time. He was one of the first reporters on the scene. Hes been talking to us since the very beginning and you were able to give us such a Crystal Clear kind of playbyplay of what was happening. Describe the scene and what it was like when you first got there this morning. I just dropped off my considering thor with some classmates at a local camp which is three or four blocks from the ups building. This is a pretty industrial neighborhood but its a very Family Friendly place with a lot of schools, a lot of summer camps going on, and this happened right after dropoff time. I was actually coming up going west, and i saw a Police Officer with lights and sirens on behind me. I pulled over to the side at the corner of vermont and 17th street, and the officer kept on speeding by followed by literally dozens of other Police Officers driving in everything from Tactical Units to regular police cars. There is a tremendous number of First Responders in this neighborhood. Exactly one block away, the San FranciscoFire Department engine 29. A couple blocks further away is a San Francisco s. W. A. T. Headquarters. General hospital, as you mentioned, it just a few blocks down portero so the place was absolutely swarmed by literally dozens and dozens of First Responders from the San FranciscoPolice Department, sf Fire Department, chp and the sheriffs department. Most of those vehicles and officers have cleared out. Just at 101 on 16th street theres an active investigation. The bomb squad came in here and with two of their large vehicles and canine units and they are searching what appears to be two vehicles in particular, a late model Dodge Challenger and a late model bmw coupe. They had officers and detectives examining those two closely and they did have what appears to be bomb squad canine units around the car and it appears that they have not found anything because the canines were given a couple of doggie treats. That typically means thats a job well done, and they have not opened up those vehicles. Those two vehicles look like they are particular interests. Theres no word of those vehicles owned by employees or anyone else involved in the shoot being earlier today. All right, a very specific accounting there of what was happening in harrowing hours. Thank you very much, Xavier Lanier. Want to go to the breaking news. I understand that you u. N. New. Thats correct. We now know that the apparent gunman was an employee who was a driver and that he opened fire right after the morning briefing there at the facility, and after he went on the shooting rampage, r krisk his own life. We understand little about him at this point other than it appears that he was indeed a driver and that this shooting occurred right after the standard morning briefing at the facility. Interesting, jaxon, is that some of the area thats cordoned off by police is outside of the building where we believe some of the victims that were actually shot and killed are. Do you know if he started the shooting inside the building and then it went outside or what actually happened from there after this morning briefing that youre talking about . Well, i believe from what we can piece together, that obviously people started to scatter after he began firing, and either the people outside were shot outside or managed to get outside where they were we know that two people perished at the facility, so what we understand is that this was the standard morning briefing. It was over and thats when the firing began. Obviously they are still piecing together the exact time line here. Jaxon van d. Erbeken adding to what were understanding this morning. Kris sanchez taking a look at the ups facility itself, the enormous facility. Lets talk about what might have been there during the shooting. Reporter you can see the people who are living here. Kris, we cant hear you at this time so well give you a chance to adjust the microphone and come right back to you. Shes really got a great Vantage Point of the people that were weually escorted from the building this morning in San Francisco. This is the building that were talking about. Its a big ups facility that is right west of 101 near 17th and utah this morning. And this is where, were understanding that a ups worker actually went to work this morning, was in the morning briefing and then shortly thereafter opened fire where he actually killed three fellow employees, two at the scene. One was transported to San FranciscoGeneral Hospital and then the gunman reportedly turned the gun on himself, apparently trying to commit suicide. Was not successful and taken to San Francisco general where he eventually died. And if there are any questions about just how premeditated and how thought out this process was, this crime was, jaxon laying it out basically for us, basically telling us, laura, as soon as that morning wrapped up, thats when this employee opened fire and as viewers observed for whatever reason, whether it started inside the building and ended up claiming victims outside of the building it seemed to consume an awful lot of space both inside and out. We have a picture that someone took from across the street from their window shows people with their arms raised and people spilling out of the back of the ups facility. Those running to the roof tops with their arms raised hoping for help from police. Can you only imagine the thoughts going through their mind at this point as there was an active shooter situation for a very lengthy period of time rore ultimately San Francisco police cleared things about an hour ago. Now, we understand the morning briefing was inside of the building, as you mentioned. C bdoubt the fear that must have been going through the fellow employees minds, these on the top of the building there as well, sam. Just trying to notify police that were up here, and that were not involved no doubt. Ad le are live pictures from overhead as weve been bringing them to you from nbc bay area skyranger this morning. The investigation no doubt already going late into the day, coming days as well as we try to gather more information about logoexactly this ups employee liveand what he was so disgruntled about quite possibly. Also. We want to know the logistics of what was going on in that building. Again, you are looking at live pictures from the Street Corner still cordoned off there, and theres still an enormous First Responder presence, and at this point as you see at the bottom of the screen there, four dead. That includes the shooter. Three people, two of whom died on scene and sadly one of the first things that we saw when nbc bay area skyranger got there this morning with the two bodies lying in the middle of the streets covered in tarps. Another person was in critical er looion and ultimately passed away from their injuries, so just deep profound tragedy for the city of San Francisco this morning. Lets get back to kris sanchez o mighs been working hard for us this morning, trying to get more information about what was going on in that big facility. Kris, what have you learned . Reporter we see some of the folks leaving that ups facility. They are being escorted out by sfp d. That was a little bit earlier. Now we know what those workers may have been doing inside that building. Several stories tall, as you away from skyranger, parking on top. Those employees in their trademark brown uniforms are actually sorting packages. This is a massive facility, and perhaps weve god video of the facility itself. Eken ands of pieces of mail. Thousands of packages every day. Now, ups confirms to us that that suspected gunman was rather, i should say that our jaxon van d. Erbeken confirm he was wearing an employee uniform, that is the gunman and ups backing off a bit saying they are not going to confirm at this point because they have handed spokespeestigation over toups. He faling to the ups spokesman 350 people work at that facility, a Package Delivery facility. The Spokesman SaysLaw Enforcement has control of the facility and they are cooperating with that investigation. With the help of our Investigative Unit we dug into stats in terms of workplace shootings. For the year of 2014 which are the statistics that are most recently available, there were more than 4,600 workplace shootings, 403 of them were homicides. The definition though is tricky because it varies by agency. The fbi uses one standard and the bureau of labor statistics uses a different standard and we can say that this was definitely a fatal workplace shoot being by truly any standard. Well continue to dig into these numbers for you, a bit of deep and dense information, but, again, its a package sorting facility handling thousands and thousands and bits of packages and also letters and what not. 350 people work at that facility at 17th and utah. Thats what we can tell you right now. We can tell you also its such a large facility that there were plenty of neighbors in the area, that we were able to reach out and contact and thats how we came up with some of the eyewitnesses, gathered the early cts of information before we had crews on scene. Y sam and laura. Kris, thank you so much. In fact, kris, thank you very much. We are getting a statement from ups this morning. That confirms much of what you just said and told us right now. In fact, 850 people are employed bc this particular facility where were taking a live look from nbc bay area skyranger. Let me read the statement from ups to you this morning, quote, ups confirms there was a shooting incident involving four employees within the companys facility in San Francisco earlier this morning. Local Law Enforcement conducting an investigation. We cannot provide information as to the identity of persons involved at this time penning the police investigation. We understand there are potentially multiple deaths though some individuals were transported to the hospital, and we are unsure of their status at this time. The company is saddened and deeply concerned about affected employees, Family Members and the community we share. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those touched by this incident. The facility is an area packing and sorting hub and Package Delivery center. Ups employs 850 at this facility. Thats a direct quote from the statement from ups this morning. It really does speak to the emotional toll, obviously, that this is going to take on the company and kris laid out the numbers for you just a second ago. Theres Something Like 4,600 workplace shootings as of 2014, and 400 of them proved to be fatal, so 10 of the time that theres a workplace shooting its fatal. What youre looking at here is an anomaly but we see it so much ps fthat it is obviously deeply distressing and almost feels commonplace. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd has been gathering information on the ground for us from the ups facility. I guess were waiting for San Francisco police. We understand that you actually talked to somebody who witnessed this, cheryl . Reporter i did. Im live at 15th and san bruno and ups employees are kind of Walking Around in a dayeas. I got ahold of one person, Marvin Calderon who said he saw firsthand what happened. Lets take a listen. So you were driving in to drop off your load. What was going on . No, we have a meeting. We call them pcms. Every day we have the meeting at 8 00. This time it was 8 15. We all got together, management gave us information and about it, stuff like that. How the day is going to go and make sure you deliver package on time and all this stuff on a daily basis and then i just hear bam, bam, bam, six shots, probably seven inside. Everybody run out and on san bruno and 17 i heard at least five more shots. Did you see the gunman . No. Do you know the gunman . I see him at work but i didnt know him as a friend. I didnt expect that. Did you hear the shots and did you run . I run away. First, i laid on the floor, you know, waiting for something, and then i just started running out like i never run before. Got to be incredible. Youve got to be shaken up right now. Im just Walking Around, just trying to clear my mind for a little bit so its like too much snow talk about big mike. Is that one of the victims who died in the shooting . He got shot in the head or something. Thats the only guy who i know he was actually reporter is he a manager . No, he was a driver. All drivers, no managers involved. It was too bad, too bad. Reporter now, according to this victim, big mike was one of the victims. He says that he saw him all the time, a lovely man, and he said recently he was talking to big mike about retirement, and he would give some of the younger guys like him advice about working here. So as you can see, witnesses are still shaken up. You may have he may have seemed calm and is really shaken up and situations like this make him think about his children bus thats what he was thinking about when he dove to the ground to try to dodge the bullets. He was just thinking about going home to his children. Again, im live at 15th street and san bruno with a block away from the ups Service Center. People are still Walking Around. Ups trucks are still lines up. Youve got emergency crews here and you have police, of course, having the facility locked down. I think theres going to be a News Conference coming up very soon. Were still gathering information, and well bring it to you as soon as possible. Back to you guys. No doubt, cheryl, the stories will continue in the coming days as well as we hear from people like that worker at the ups facility. No doubt how frightening it must have been for those employees who were just going in for a regular day of work and to hear their morning hearing and have the gunfire erupt. It was, and i think obviously just the painfulness of having a relationship with the people who are affected. You talk about the fact that the employer you interviewed new one of the victims as just big mike. They must have been buddies. Reporter yes, they were friends, and thats the thing thats so shocking about the ups workers Walking Around here. They were buddies. He didnt know his last name. All he knew was big mike, and and that has got the folks who work here all shaken up around here. This guy, a father, big mike, talking about retirement soon. People are going through the crime scene. Across the way is a homeless encampment and a lot of folks driving by. Traffic still horrendous on 101 headed south and people not knowing whats going on. Everyone knows whats going on in the country. People stopping by and talking to me and saying that, hey, there was a shooting in back east, hand now the shooting here. People just dont know what to think. Everyday people, and also the nokes who work for ups. It seems as though this is sort of a family, so to speak. Mr. Calderon tells me that they were just about to have a meeting inside the building. He said that trucks were lined up to getting ready to conduct that meeting when he heard about five or six shots, and at that time he hit the ground. These folks are you guys workers at ups . No. Reporter people really are kind of tightlipped around here. I think they have been told not to talk to the media as they are walking by, you know. Its a policy not to talk to the media, and thats totally understandable, but as you can see things are still moving fluidly, and its just a real volatile situation somewhat of, and all i can say is that the ups workers are trying to deal with this tragedy. Back to you guys. As no doubt they will be in the coming days as well. Thank you very much, cheryl. We would like to turn over now to Jaxon Van Derbeken and right after the meeting opened up he opened fire. Thats right. Well, what we understand is that hes a driver, obviously potentially disgruntled. There was a morning briefing, it ended, and at that point gunfire erupted. Weve also learned that police have searched his home in the Inner Richmond looking for clues for what might have motivated this. Its unclear what, if anything, they found during that search, but that has been conducted and that home has been secured. We understand that he may have brought as many as three clips of ammunition to the premises and they recovered those at the scene. Two people died at the scene and the gunman and a fourth person died at the hospital and, of course, we know that a fifth person walked in and was suffered some sort of leg wound, and he is expected to be okay. The police are obviously looking to what might have motivated this. We do know that he was a driver and that the meeting was uneventful as far as we can tell so there wasnt anything at the meeting that appeared to have prompted this. Jaxon, you know, weve been talking about the fact that the upds has already issued a statement. Certainly they have had a couple of hours to absorb what happened and apparently there were Something Like 800 employees in some ways associated with this facility. When you talk to police, are they surprised at all given all of the ammunition that they found on scene and just a sinister element of how this was planned . In fact, was the death toll higher . Reporter we dont know. Theres some screaming about some information that we have. We understand theres four people dead including the gunman and then a fifth person injured. If there was another person dead, they would have been at the scene so we dont know we havent got erin that fifth fatality confirmed. What we do understand is that this was a regular uneventful morning at this facility, and the morning briefing went off as normal when this mayhem occur. We also do know that as a matter of course they did search the gunmans residence in the Inner Richmond. Its been secure. And its unclear what, if anything, has been found there and were learning what more clues might have scene and what might have prompted this. Jaxon van derbeken our eyes and ears there bringing us more information as to what happened during this crime. As of 9 00 this morning, we d ar reports of gunshots fired rt a ups facility in San Francisco. At 17th and utah. Police immediately respond to develene to find several people that have been shot. Four in fact were killed, including the gunman who actually took his own life. He was later pronounced dead at San FranciscoGeneral Hospital. As i mentioned, it happened shortly after 9 00 this morning, but Tactical Teams were quick to arrive at the scene there at the ups sorting facility where at least 850 employees actually worked and escorted them out of the building. They took many into safety and the investigation is continuing this morning. Speaking of the investigation, we have a live look right now at the podium as we are awaiting a News Conference from San Francisco police. They are at this point testing it out audrea and were probably moments away from getting more information. This staging area only a couple of blocks away from where cheryl has been reporting and pete, and all of our other reporters who are right there right now. This is the staging area at utah and mariposa so right on the other side of 101 from where this all played out. You actually see members of the San FranciscoPolice Department now approaching. Weve not only seen them gathered at this area, but weve seen them at San Francisco general, outside fast silts there. They have been gathering the information. Weve seen the Tactical Team on the roof of the ups building as they had their guns drawn searching and going car to car. They had to clear that entire building itself to make sure everything was safe and take all the employees out. Lets listen in as this press conference is about to begin. Well get busy ant starlted right away. Assistant chief tony chaplin will be providing the press briefing for you today. Good morning, everyone. At 8 55 a. M. Afp d. Officers responded to a call to several people shot at the ups building at 17th and san bruno. Multiple officers responded and determined the suspect was in the building. Officers determined this was an active shooter situation and nfltd contact teams. Officer encounted shooting victims and immediately evacuated them to a safe location to begin medical treatment. One contact team located the suspect who was still 5r78d with an assault pistol. The suspect put the gun to his head and discharged the weapon of the officers secured the weapon and immediately administered aid to the suspect. The building has been secured at this point. We believe the incident involves only one suspect. At this point we do not believe this incident is related to terrorism. The suspect was dressed in a ups uniform but we have not yet confirmed or determined if he is an employee of the company. At this time we have identified six shooting victims including the suspect. The suspect is deceased as are three of the shooting victims. The teams continue to search the building for additional buildings and witnesses who sheltered in place. The sfp d. Homicide detail is investigating this incident, and we ask anyone with information to contact our tip line. That number is 4155754444. The San FranciscoPolice Department thanks our Public Safety partners assisting in our response and investigation. Our partners today include the Fire Department. San francisco General Hospital, the sheriffs department, the california Highway Patrol and fwuro of alcohol, tobacco and firearms. This is a terrible tragedy. We recognize the impact this shooting is having on the city and ups. We are working to establish unification sites for ups employees and their families. The red cross has established one site at 500 san bruno avenue, another site at the Cordon Bleu School at 100 kansas street. Again, this is a tragedy thats touched many lives today. We ask that members of the press respect the privacy of the victims, ups employees and their families at this time, and at this point ill take a few questions. Chief. Do you have any idea about a motive, why this person committed this crime . No, we do not. As you can imagine, there are dozens and dozens of witnesses to this. Have you identified the shooter . Tentatively we have but were not going to release that. What about the victims . Not releasing any information out of respect for the families hand make sure everybody is notified before we release any information, any detailed information about who these victims are. Can you tell us basically the scenario of how it happened and where he was . Was it on the premises, in the building, et cetera . Vick, i can answer only one of those. It was in the building, but everything weve asked. Were trying to find out now. Our investigators are going through painstaking interviews with everyone that was in the building when the tragedy occurred. Im sorry, i can only hear one at a time. How many employees are being interviewed . Like i said, theres dozens of witnesses. There may have been folks not employees of the umz on premises so there are a lot of people to be interviewed to find out if they were employees or if they happened to be on site when this thing happened. Three fatalities . Four, yes, including the shooter. [ inaudible question ]. I dont have that information but to answer your question the shooters wound was selfinflicted. Do you know if the employees were targeted, or was this shooter randomly selecting people . One more question here. [ inaudible question ]. Weve recovered two firearms on the scene. Thank you. Thank you, everybody. Police chief tony chaplin well keep you posted and plan to do another press brief at approximately 2 00 this afternoon. Our special Operations Bureau personnel are still actively searching the building just to make sure that there are no additional victims or witnesses who are sheltered in place and thats all we have for you at this time. Thank you. What is your name, sir . My name is Sergeant Michael an d. Raychak, Public Information officer for sfp d. Just got the very latest from the San FranciscoPolice Department. Hopefully well learn more information this afternoon where they will have another press briefing this andor afternoon and the gunman who in fact took his own life. He was armed with an assault pistol and when he saw police arrive, he actually turned the gun on himself. He was not successful at that time in taking his own life. He was taken to the hospital, d. Francisco general and thats in fact where he died but not before killing three other people at that ups facility in San Francisco. Right. We also learned there were six shooting vehicles in total. That was assistant police chief tony chaplin who said that the person who committed this crime was actually wearing a ups uniform, but he could not confirm that it was actually a ups employee. They got to go now and interview hundreds of people to get firsthand accounts. Well go back to the press conference right now. They need a break and were bringing in additional officers to give them relieve while the interviews continues. Were planning for a 2 00 press briefing. If that changes earlier or later well send out an email and a tweet and let you guys know. Do we know anything about the shooter . I cannot provide any further information on that. Thats still part of the investigation. Weve not completed the interviews. [i had audible question ]. I dont have that information. Well try to get that to you at 2 00. [inaudible question ]. They they contacted him and then they shot himself. I dont know any further details in terms of interact. They saw him and made contact with him. I dont know if there was any dialogue or interchange, but he did, he shot himself as the officers were there. Have the firearms been recovered . Its still a crime scene so most likely they are still at the crime scene to be processed. Two firearms. Thank you very much. Okay. So that wraps up the San FranciscoPolice Department press conference. As you just heard a second ago they will be back with updates on their investigation at 2 00 today. You can be sure were keeping you up to date on whatever information that we learn. Again, were back live now taking a distance perspective as our nbc skyranger seems to be t thatg away and leaving the scene, but a lot to process, a lot to digest right now. Nbc bay area cheryl hurd joining us on the ground at that ups facility. We were just updated by police. We heard that. What do you have from your Vantage Point . Reporter well, i was listening in on the press conference, and just to reiterate that, this is just a horrible tragedy, a workplace shooting. Nothing to do with terrorism. I know a lot of people may be thinking that, but but the Police Department just confirmed that it was a workplace situation. Nothing to do with tragedy to do with terrorism rather, and it has touched many lives. Now, people are Walking Around in a days. What were looking at are ups trucks lining up. The police have the building surrounded is and technical units are here, and they have the whole place cordoned off while they gather information. Now, i talked to a ups worker, and he was Walking Around in a d. Aze. And i heard bam, bam, bam, six shots. Seven inside, everybody runs out and on the corner of san bruno and 17 and i hear at least five more shots. Did you see the gunman . No. Do you know the gunman . I see him work, but i dont know him as a friend, so its like i didnt expect that from nobody. It was too much. So you heard of the shots, and did you run . I run away. First i just laid on the floor, you know, waiting for something, and i just started running out, like crazy, like ive never run before. Reporter got to be incredible. Got to be shaken up right now . Im just trying to walk around and clearing my mind a little bit because its like too much. Reporter so mr. Calderon told me a little bit about himself. Didnt tell me how long hes worked at ups but not as long as one of the victims, according to him. He said one of the victims he knows him as big mike. He was pretty sad about whats going on here, of course. That goes on to say without saying. Big mike was talking about retirement and would often give advice to some of the young workers, so hes just in disbelief about whats going on here. He said that just to recap that this started to unfold around 9 00. Ups workers in their trucks about to go into a meeting. They do this all the time. He heard shots about five or six shots. He hit the ground and ran for cover. Mr. Calderon says that he has children and all he can think about were his children when he was trying to run for safety. If youre back here live, you can see that some of the trucks have been moved, some of them are moving forward. We see a tactical truck there and the media stage right there by the yellow tape and you see Police Officers here and you see a canopy up above. That seems to be the area where they are staging and doing the investigation. Just to recap, just in case youre joining us, this started to unfold around 9 00 today. Four people killed. The gunman turning the gun on himself. I asked the worker if he knew the alleged gunman, and he says that hes seen him around. He has no idea who he is, but he has seen that person. People are Walking Around and traffic is still a nightmare at this time. Its 11 44 in the morning and usually its smooth sailing, and its this situation is still causing a lot of problems. Live at 15th and san bruno, were just trying to gather information. Again, i did talk to someone passion by. I broke the news to him, and he tells me he used to work here at the ups Service Center, and he says he worked here during christmastime and he was stunned by what happened here because, according to him. Security is really tight and people were really friendly and seemed to be really happy here, but then i told him the alleged gunman was a worker and so security possibility didnt have anything to do with this situation. Lack to you guys. Anoall right. Heir hyou very much, cheryl hurd, who has been reporting live from the scene outside that have ups facility in San Francisco where a gunman opened fire this morning shortly before 9 00 this morning after the morning briefing to fellow employees. This is what happened shortly thereafter. These are people we believe nobody employees from the ups Service Center holding their arms up to police who had to rescue him in a sense and bring him down from are the building and evacuate the building. There was a shelter in place for area buildings surrounding residences and what not while they investigated this scene not knowing if there was actually one gunman, possibly two. Weve now found out there was one gunman who in fact took his own life. He later died at San FranciscoGeneral Hospital this morning but not before he took the life of three others. You are looking right now at video we got off of instagram from one of our viewers. This is the scene setting right here. You can see Police Officers trying to manage the response and all the people that felt threatened this morning as it was all playing out. You can see this hoar in realtime. As cheryl was alluding, to such a difficult conversation for employees to have as there was a sense of community and respect there. Cheryl sailed there is a tent city nearby as well. Thats one of the perspectives were looking at and respective from one of our reporters, joe rosato, jr. This is something we showed you earlier and the employees in the atown outfits were walking out, bayreds of them walking out of the building, but we do know that those men and women will be interviewed by the San FranciscoPolice Department as assistant chief tony chaplin talking about the fact that they are not even sure whether or not the gunman was in fact a ups worker but they will talk to all the people that were there to try to put together what could have motivated him and how this happened. He was believed to be at this point. Police have not confirmed it, as you mentioned, sam, but he was wearing a ups uniform. Nbc bay areas pete suratos has been live at the scene as well. What have you been seeing from your perspective, pete . Reporter yeah, good morning to you, laura and sam. And that Media Briefing with sfp d. Wrapping up not too long ago confirm a lot of the information that weve been reporting all morning long here on nbc bay area. Well go ahead and show you the scene on 17th street and utah. You still see a heavy Police Presence as well as San Francisco fire as they conduct this investigation and heres what we learned during that briefing. We know what was an active shooting situation happened around 855 00 a. M. , just before 9 00 a. M. And several shot at ups. Thats the call that they got here from sfp d. , and they determined at that time that the suspect was in the building. When they got inside, they encountered victims in there, and they took them to a safe place. Now, that suspect was located by police at that point, and they tell us that the suspect was armed with a gun and the suspect shot himself in the head taking his hone life. Thats the new details that were getting, at least according to this Media Briefing. One of the things you just dressed on. He was dressed in a ups unifor. Weve been reporting all morning long that he is. We believe him to be a ups employee, but they are not at least confirming this at this time. Now, as far as the victim count. We know that there were six victims as a result of this shooting. Four dead, including the shooter. As i mentioned, those chain of events, still an ongoing investigation, but we do expect to get another Media Briefing from them in about a couple of hours for more information on this developing story. Back to you guys in the studio. Tw all right. Thanks for the very latest. S te suratos who rushed to the scene this morning. Ill tell you what. There was obviously a situation were covering in weeksy. Nancy pelosi reacting to, that and as it played out, more tragedy in San Francisco so the minority leader tweeting this out this morning. Tocredibly difficult day. My thoughts are with the injured and with the families of those loves in todays shooting at that ups facility in San Franciscos potrero hill. Both sides of the country dealing with separate tragedies tearing away at our communities. 11 48 right now. Were mentioning the traffic in that area near 17th and utah near the ups facility not far from 101s. Mike, youve been following the traffic for us. I have. This is surface street traffic. 101, vermont street, the off ramp is closed, that distraction alone is enough to keep things slowly moving north 101 from 280 all the way up in towards the skyway and getting over towards the bay bridge. This is just off of thefreeway and, again, vermont street is closed and the off ramp is closed and so is the area from what im hearing fifth down to 18st and thats quite a stretch of roadway from potrero all the way to highway 101. That perimeter is concerned because theres a lot of folks in crosstown traffic, dog patch and the hills as well as mass transit in this perimeter. Muni continues to talk about delays. And here are the specifics from muni. Just note that that entire area is having folks kind of swerve around where the closures continue, the perimeter around the ups building just off of highway 101. Another concern. This is where the closures are and folks are slowing on 101. Some folks did use 280 as an alternate. Things are starting to clear up and we need to have more traffic headed into the area. At t park, home of the giants, game about an hour from now, so the potential for more crosstown traffic to be affected by this delay. A little farther south for folks traveling to the city and it is off of 2280 and just note that this will disrupt the flow of s chfic here and it could have a Ripple Effect of anywhere approaching china basin. Keep that in mind as well. 280 starting to clear up as folks head over to the ballpark. It will get very congested. Gives you a good illustration of the area showing the map and a good illustration of the emotion of all of this as well has been found with nbc bay area chaired hurd live on the ground near the ups facility actually talking to some of the employees this morning who are actually in the morning briefing. That happened shortly before this gunman opened fire, cheryl. Reporter it was a shocking situation for this particular gentleman i talked to. He was walking by, and i stopped him and i said, hey, were you inside the facility when it happened and he said, yeah, i was and he kept on walking and he said what did you hear and see and thats when he started to open up . It was a harrowing experience for him. Just about to go inside for a meeting. They do this periodically. Trucks were lined up ready to go, and then he said he heard the gunfire. Lets listen in to what he had to say. So you were driving in to drop off your load. What was going on . No. We have a meeting. We call them pcms. Every day we have the meeting at 8 00. This morning it was at 8 50 and we get together and management gives us information about it. Stuff like that, how the day is going. Make sure you deliver your parkages on time, all this stuff on a daily basis and then i hear bam, bam, bam, six shots, probably seven inside. Everybody run out. Outside on san bruno and 17, i hear at least five more shots. Did you see the gunman . No. Do you know the gunman . I see him work, but i dont know him as a friend, so its like i didnt expect that from nobody. It was too much. Reporter so you heard the shots, and did you run . What did you do . I run away. First, i just laid on the floor, you know, waiting for something, and then i just started running out, like a crazy, like i never run before. Got to be incredible. Youve got to be shaken up all right . Im doing all right. Just Walking Around trying to clear my mind for a little bit so its like too much. You talk about big mike. Is that one of the victims who died in the shooting . Yes. What i hear he got shot in the head or Something Like this. Thats the only guy that i know he was actually is he a manager . No, hes a driver. What i know is its all drivers. No managers involved. It was too bad, too bad. I cant imagine being that person right now. Mr. Calderon told me that all he could think about were the children when he heard the shots fired when he went looking to cover. He said that big mike was talking about retirement. He would talk about it all the time to visit younger workers. He was just looking forward to that day. If youre looking at us life, you can see, of course, that the area, the ups Service Center is cordoned off and tents up near the area, possibly where it all happened and where they are conducting the the press briefings, and you can see Tactical Units here. The fourblock railedus dius is blocked off. Traffic is easing up a little bit and still a problem. In case youre just joining us, around 9 00 there was a shooting here at the ups Service Center. Four people dead including the gunman. He came in around 9 00, ran past a lot of people and started shooting. A lot of folks here Walking Around in a d. Aze and on the roads you can see the trucks lined up. Went to look inside and the drivers, they are not there. They are probably holed up, you know, somewhere talking to folks. About an hour ago the San FranciscoPolice Chaplain arrived, and he was called to the scene, of course, to console a lot of the folks here, so this is an incredible scene here at the ups Service Center. We had no idea how long this will be cordoned off. It will probably be all day long. Back to you guys. Thank you very much, cheryl hurd reporting live from the scene near the ups facility where the gunman opened fire this morning killing three and eventually taking his own life as well. We mentioned the the drivers involved, the toll on their families and on their friends and big mike, as cheryl was referring to. We spoke with a woman who actually said that big mike was her Delivery Driver for Something Like ten years, and she was hearing through Different Networks of friends that he had passed away and just the utter grief and disbelief that people are absorbing right now. You can expect to hear much more about the people affected, their friends, their families throughout the course of the day, certainly on the nbc bay area news at 5 00 and 6 00. In the meantime, we would like to get back now to an expert, r. J. Kirschner, in dealing with Workplace Violence hand knowing the signs ahead of time so that you can intervene if you need to, and r. J. , the assistant police chief said this a second ago. This is a tragedy thats affected many lives today. Is this the kind of thing that potentially could be preventable if people pay close attention . First of all, our hearts go out to all the victims and the coworkers of this event. Workplace violence is preventable, provided that a solid Training Program is in place that teaches the employees how to see something, say something, hear something, say something. Theres a lot of, as we call, preincident indicators that appear and a lot of different behaviors that are on a way away from the norm for an individual, and so and so what we do is we ask them to to communicate early on, you know, and to talk to their coworkers, and if there is an issue to bring it confidentially through their, you know, either eap program or through their which is Employee Assistance program or through their Hr Department and let somebody know that there can be interventions that can prevent an event like this from occurring. R. J. Kirschner, giving us some information that as a coworker and Family Member you would want to be attuned to. Thank you very much for that insight. All right. As were closing the noon hour right now, want to check in once again with nbc bay areas Jaxon Van Derbeken who has new information for us about the suspect. Reporter just confirmed that they have identified the suspect, and they have searched his home in the Inner Richmond area. We dont know much about how long hes been there. Next of kin have not been notified and police say its part of the ongoing investigation, but we do know that he did live in San Francisco in the Inner Richmond, and the police have searched his residence related to this case. Right now the Authorities Say that it, you know, the situation at the scene has been cleared and its moving right now and they are trying to determine what this person might have motivated this heinous attack. Jaxon, do we know they obviously have a lot of information to mine through at this individuals house . Do you know whether or not police have figured out if in fact he was a ups employee or just wearing a uniform in. Were under the belief, sources have told us, he was indeed a ups driver who was disgruntled, and he had been apparently attending that briefing and then after that briefing is when this occurred. Okay. So, again, you kind of drew out the sequence of events for us. I mean, it was this morning essentially at the start of the workday when he walked in, attended the briefing, was armed at the time and violence erupted as soon as it was over . Reporter thats right, and he obviously came equipped for significant harm with three rounds, three clips containing multiple rounds of ammunition. Three magazines that he had there containing those multiple rounds, all right, jaxon, thank you very much. Hes been giving us constant information in regards to the suspect himself as hes in close contact with San Francisco police. As we continue to take the shots and show you video this morning, a horrific shooting happening at e e ups facility in san four isco at 17th near utah this morning. Three people died, four people actually died. Oldt includes the gunman who eventually took his own life. Five people in fact in total were shot. One not that critical condition, and as weve been telling you so far this morning, it is believed live that the suspect did in ntct work for ups. We would like to kay up some sound right now from are the News Conference that San Francisco police held really only about 30 minutes or so ago updating us on the status of this investigation and what they learned. Lets take a listen. At 8 55 a. M. , fbi responded to several people shot at the ups building at 17th and san bruno. Multiple officers responded and determined that the suspect was in the building.
