Berkeley police tell us there could be as many as a thousand or perhaps even more people out here pro testing the speech when he speaks tonight at 8 00 here at the student union. You can see the barricades are up. The Police Department has called in officers from other u. C. Campuses to help out. And theyve also alerted the Alameda County Sheriffs Office and Berkeley Police to be on stand by. Organizers of this protest have stated on facebook it is their intention to shut down the speech tonight and prevent what they say is a right wing hate speech against women and minorities. A leader in the altright movement has been accused of being a racist, misogynist and white supremacist. About 100 people protested peacefully last night at cal poly. Last month a protest turned dangerous when one person was shot at the university of washington. Protesters at u. C. Davis became so rowdy he had to cancel his appearance there. A number of cal students and professors have asked the university to cancel tonights appearance, but the administration will not. Citing his right to free speech and the campus republicans right to invite him to speak here. Even though the University Chancellor publicly calls him a troll and a pro vok or. I say bring him. When Police Officers arrived, they found a man with gunshot wounds at 10 00 last night. That man has still not been identified and were waiting for a suspect description and a motive. This marks the citys fourth homicide of the year on the heels of last years 25year record for homicides. Well, today the deputy who first looked for sierra lamars cell phone after she disappeared is on the stand in the Death Penalty trial of her accused killer. The deputy also questioned registered secti registered sex offenders about her disappearance. They told jurors yesterday deputies did not follow proper protocol when collecting evidence inside lamars back pack hinting that deputies might have tainted it. He also claims there was no visible hair found on a rope discovered in the truck of torres car which contradicts what prosecutors said. Lamars body has never been found so dna evidence in this case is critical. And if they can suggest the dna is not properly analyzed, it wasnt properly collected and if its not reliable, that completely undermines a case where there is no crime scene and there is no body. He tweeted his support for trumps executive order on immigration, breaking away from the slew of local leaders and educators who had condemned that travel ban. He also tweeted a flurry of messages from protrump, antimuslim accounts. I dont care what the office says. I dont care what anyone says. Were going to follow the law and worry about protecting students. So, this in no way reflects the views of the agency. Bell says he is tweeting as a private citizen, not as a representative of the school board. He works for Contra Costa County office of education. The city of berkeley has reached a legal settlement in connection with the response by police during a 2014 protest. Protesters and journalists sued over the use of force during a black lives matter protest in december of 2014. Many of them were struck with batons. The city agreed to 125,000 pay out for seven different plaintiffs. The city of berkeley also agreed to police use of force reform. Councilmembers will meet later this month to officially sign off on that settlement. People signing up for Health Insurance through covered california have a little extra time to finish those applications. The the new deadline is saturday. The catch is you had to have started the application before the deadline which was midnight. The Trump Administration is also extending the deadline on federal exchange crafted by the Affordable Care act. The race features cyclists from all around the world and will cover 600 miles from sacramento to pasadena. Its been producing some light rain, but still not seeing any of the heavier downpours just yet. As we get a closer look at the north bay from napa over towards vacaville, and we are still going to see this rain off and on through the rest of the day. Also the winds picking up. Winds are rushing in from the south. Well start to see more of a stronger southerly wind later on this evening along the coast line, thats where the winds will be the strongest. And we will have the highest gusts at about 2 00 to 3 00 in the morning with more of those scattered showers starting to move in. Half moon bay looking at those wind speeds sustained at 37 miles an hour, may be even higher with gusts up to 50 in the inland areas, at about 20 to 25 miles an hour with some of those winds picking up. And it still stays breezy throughout the day tomorrow. Looking at the time line for when well start to see some of the heavier rain moving in, looks like by our 11 00 newscast well start to see some of the showers becoming more scattered and then some heavier downpours early in the morning, three or 4 00 well have rain moving in that will briefly be heavy and scattered activity throughout the day tomorrow. This is storm system number one. You can see the swirl of the clouds, and this will take a couple of days to work its way through the bay area. And well have a brief break before storm system number two moves in, and thats expected on sunday. All of this bringing a lot of rain and some sierra snow. Santa clara county is among those taking the Trump Administration to Court Challenging the executive order on immigration. County gets close to a billion dollars in federal funding every year and that could be in jeopardy. County supervisors voted unanimously to go ahead with the lawsuit last night. Santa clara is a sanctuary county. Leaders say President Trumps executive orders require compliance with ice and other security agencies in order to get 300 million of promised federal money. The county says it could lose much more than that. With the leverage on the 300 million, the matching money that we gain with that 300 million, we could lose up to a billion dollars and thats onefifth of our budget. If Santa Clara County were to lose that money, official say that there would be cuts to Services Like Emergency Rooms and Mental Health clinics. San francisco is also headed to court. City attorney Dennis Herera filed a lawsuit yesterday. His goal, stopping the president from withholding federal funding for sanctuary cities who refuse to help immigration officers. That letter argues that Global Warming is real and that bold action must be taken now. Gaining praise from renters, san jose leaders reportedly modified an element of the citys rent control program. The mercury news reports that councilmembers yesterday eliminated a plan that allows landlords to effectively bank the unused portions of rent hikes in any given year to tuse them later. Rent hikes of up to 5 per year. San jose is in the process of implementing this new rent control program. Happening today, the battle in richmond over rent control heads to a courtroom. A Contra Costa County judge will halt a rent control measure approved by voters last year. Todays hearing follows a series of delays that began in early january. If the injunction is approved by a judge, the law would be on hold until the appeals play out in court. Rent control supporters plan to rally before this hearing. Many are asking what is behind a recent outbreak of measles in l. A. County. This is a new state law mandating vaccinations for School Children has been in effect for few months. Infectious disease expert worries the new law may not be as effective as hoped even though parents are complying and getting their children vaccinated. And in california, the kindergarten vaccination rate is about 94 . So, thats pretty darn good. It turns out, however, that measles being so infectious, that you need an even higher immunization rate than that. That was dr. But in the middle of 2016 they got an unexpected notice from a debt collector. I was shocked because i never had like any news from rural metro about a bill or anything.
