We are expecting some clear skies for the near term. As we get ready for this next storm system to move in, that will bring heavy rain starting late tonight, so its time now to clear out the storm drains, move away those leaves and allow that water to run off somewhere that will help that water drain. We are expecting some flooding, so now its 45 degrees. After thafter chilly start, sti fairly cold. Were in the upper 30s for the north bay, 46 in morgan hill and in san jose 44 degrees. So weve powered up our storm ranger on a mountain in san bruno and this will be scanning around the bay area and giving us an hd view of whats going to move in as far as the radar imagery and the clouds that are starting to roll in as we go into tonight. Now, expecting some very heavy rain, some strong winds and it all gets going late tonight and into tomorrow morning so ill give you a better idea of the timeline and what you can expect coming up in the microclimate forecast. Reporter yes, these businesses are anticipating the big storms weve been talking about all week long. Heres the sandbags. They have got these flood gates here that theyre going to prop up top prevent the flooding from getting in there. Its clear that a lot of these businesses arent taking any chances. The way it works, theres going to be a flood horn that goes off if that creek level goes above 12 feet, which means you need to get to Higher Ground as soon as possible. Another concern theyre worried about are the trees. Theyre sitting on saturated ground following some of the rain we have had as of late. City officials worry what kind of damage could happen in the area as a result of the weekend storms. So one of the worries right now is that there are trees that are starting to fall over. Weve had a lot of downed trees in town in the last couple of weeks since the december 15th storm. Reporter definitely something theyll keep an eye on this weekend. As for those sandbags, they are provided for free by the town and its going to be near the red hill shopping center. Expect it to bring in some heavy rain, also some strong winds. And now weve been telling you that its been so cold this morning, but at least we do have the dry weather. Here is a live look outside at san rafael as we get ready for some weekend heavy rain. You want to prepare today for that potential some of flooding. The scattered rain starts to move in late tonight and then it continues all throughout the day tomorrow and gets heavier on sunday. We could also have some strong winds, up to 40 to 50 miles per hour. Now we see that the clouds are starting to move into parts of the bay area, but once again still some dry weather continuing. And its moving a little bit closer, but we see that big cluster of those clouds tapping into some subtropical moisture. So far weve had quite a few watches, warnings, advisories issued by the National Weather service. As of right now, we do see there is a high wind watch in effect for all of these areas shaded in the orange and that will be in effect from tonight through sunday morning with winds coming in from the south. We could have the winds sustained at 20 to 35 miles an hour and some gusts at 50 to 60 miles an hour. For all of these areas shaded in green, a flash flood watch. That pretty much includes most of the bay area and we may see more of them issued as we go into the weekend. By early tomorrow morning we have a pretty good coverage of rain. Then we start to see the yellows and the reds here on the map that. Indicates some very heavy rain and that really gets going as we go into tomorrow night as well as sunday all throughout the day. Once again, thats when wee that heightened alertness for the potential of some flooding. It continues into monday and then another storm system that could impact the bay area between tuesday and wednesday. So looking at this first round of rain, we have the potential of getting about 5 inches or possibly close to 6 inches of rain for the Santa Cruz Mountains. All of us getting pretty heavy rainfall. So well be keeping an eye on area creeks and rivers. At the Russian River at guerneville, we could see it rising above flood stage. If you do live in that area, you want to make sure youre prepared to move to Higher Ground. At napa river, we will stay close to the monitor stage between sunday and monday, but once again it may rise fairly quickly. Its something that youll want to keep an eye on. Also the creek at Stanford University will stay below the monitor stage and also for the guadalupe river, once again staying below the monitor stage. It is going to be cold today reaching 51 degrees on the peninsula and the trivalley, 55 degrees in the south bay and the east bay, up to 52 degrees. This will also be the time to get out there in the yard and prep for this storm that will be moving in. We could also have some strong winds, so you want to make sure you are moving around the Patio Furniture and doing things like that as we could have those winds knocking things over for saturday into sunday. Right now looking at a calm view of san jose with once again some sunshine and temperatures that are slowly warming up. It was so cold this morning. We dealt with some freezing temperatures and frosty conditions. Now it is 47 degrees in oakland, 43 in palo alto and San Francisco at 45 degrees, still in the upper 30s in santa rosa. The clouds are reaching a little closer to the bay area. Well start to see those showers moving in later on tonight and mostly cloudy skies throughout the evening before that rain moves in. It looks like once again that rain will stay with us. A high wind watch has been issued for most of the bay area, especially the hills. For all of these areas that were seeing shaded in the orange color, it looks like that has been extended to include more of our area. It starts out tonight and continues into sunday and we also have some flash flood watches in effect. The National Weather service continues to issue more watches, warnings and advisories for us. We could have up to 10 inches of rain, especially for the Santa Cruz Mountains. The incoming storm starts to move in late tonight. As we look at the timeline by tomorrow at 1 00 during the afternoon a pretty good coverage and then it gets heavier for tomorrow morning as well as sunday morning with some bright colors indicating some intense rainfall and some strong winds that will be with us throughout sunday into monday before it tapers off. Farther on down the line still some rain in the forecast or at least the middle of next week. Rainfall totals, and this is a look at a different computer model, shows us between now and monday when this wraps up we could have over six inches of rain for the Santa Cruz Mountains and much of the bay area getting at least 5 inches of rain. So the concern of some flooding on our creeks and rivers. Wind speeds will start to pick up as we go through sunday and the strongest winds will be during the afternoon on sunday before those winds start to relax on monday, but still quite breezy. Looking at olympic valley, already a lot of snow there in the sierra. This is the view from heavenly, still some fog all across the lake and the skiers really enjoying this day in truckee, its only zero right now and theres heavy snow on the ground. Also zero at north star as far as that current temperature with skiers outside. Unfortunately, as this storm moves in, temperatures warm up, so well get some snow initially. Then it changes over to rain and then back to snow. During that time frame we could be measuring snow in the feet for the sierra. For the bay area, once again a lot of heavy rain and the potential of most of us getting at least 5 inches of rain. It looks once again like it continues into next week. Temperatures staying mild. And for the inland areas, strong winds, especially on sunday, and the flood threat continues through monday. Of course well have more updates as we go into our later newscasts. All right, kari, thanks. Were getting new updates as it comes to the shooting at the ft. Lauderdale airport where we know at least 5 are dead, 13 shot. We want to dip right back into our Network Coverage with nbc news right now. Where im standing, its just littered with luggage. People just dropped it. Backpacks, bags of food, their boards, everything just littered there and they ran over to terminal 3 and thats where theyre being held right now. Its a little unclear what set this off but clearly there was some sort of perceived threat and thats why people took off as they did. As im looking back out at the runway, i can see the passengers are now crossing from the taxiway across the grass onto the runway so thats very clear evidence that this airport is shut down. Nobody will be in that area with planes coming and going. Stay close. Were looking at another picture. This seems a bit more orderly and directed. People being directed and sent across a railroad trarks apparently to exit the airport. You saw many with their hands up. Thats not atypical in situations like that. We saw it going back to columbine and mass shootings. Police dont know if another shooter may be hiding in the crowd so they want to make sure as they process them out that no one in there with a hostile intent is maybe hidden among passengers, so not uncommon to see that. But here is another shot of people coming across the taxiways and onto the runway. Lets go again to pete williams, our justice correspondent. Pete has been trying to gather information on the suspected shooter. Pete what, can you tell us . Well, you may have heard earlier bill nelson using a name on the air that we have heard from several federal authorities. A 26yearold man named staban santiago, born in new jersey. Apparently had lived in alaska for a while. March 16, 1990, is the day of birth. Beyond that and going that its a male in his 20s, beyond that we dont have any information about what the motive is. Do we know if he was among the shot . Yes, we do. We know from witnesses that he was not. Several witnesses have said when the authorities finally came after he fired an initial round of shots and then stopped to reload, they confronted him, ordered him down, he put the gun down and lay down on the ground and was arrested. So the best information we have from witnesses is that he was not shot. So obviously now theyre aggressively investigating and questioning him. All right. A view of the parking garage where police have drawn on a bit earlier. Weve seen them coming up and down the stairs with automatic weapons. Not clear what they were looking at there. In terms of the evacuation, this is beginning to look more like a total evacuation of the airport based on the pictures were seeing right now. Earlier people had fled the terminal at the height of the shooting. They were let back in about the same time we were told the situation was stabilized and the suspect was in custody. And then what we just saw a moment ago. I want to show you some earlier video that was taken inside the airport. This is obviously taken with a cell phone. This is in the baggage claim area. I havent seen it so well watch together and see what it shows. It looks like somebody may be being treated there. Kerry, you were in that baggage claim area. What was it like . I was upstairs on the departure level. The authorities have it closed off so i cant describe whats going on down there other than saying when i peer over the side, there are a lot of officers standing there, some with their weapons, others on their phones coordinating something. That video, you could see peep huddling around someone that appeared to need treatment. Theres the skyline and in the foreground people who seem to be directed across the runways to an exit to the airport. We saw some folks walking along a Railroad Track and there you see a lot of airport workers in their reflective vests as they make their way in the same direction so this seems to be an orderly evacuation were watching. You can see right there in the center it looks like an officer in tactical gear. It would not be out of the realm of possibility that they are searching for a vehicle associated with that suspect, esteban santiago. We can only see whats happening but no signs of anything there as they continue to patrol. Obviously have to worry about potential accomplices, anything that the shooter may have left behind. If his intentions were more casualties, an explosive. No indication that exists, i could point out, but that would be standard protocol in a situation like this. If youre just tuning into all this or just making your way in front of a tv, the latest weve is that 13 people were shot at the airport near the baggage claim area in ft. Lauderdale. 5 people have been killed. We dont have all the conditions on those that were injured, but this happening, a man, apparently a shooting and according to one witness even reloading at one point. This is more video that was taken with a cell phone. You can see the paramedics there. We believe this is at the gate yeah, that would be the gate leading to the air side. That is the air security side. On the other side of the fence would be an area that is not does not have immediate access without a gate pass. Keep in mind there would have been passengers making their way out, also the workers on the ramp that may not have realized what was happening as the doors opened and people began flooding toward them. John shlicter was an eyewitness and we have an interview with him. John, are you with us . Yes, i am. Im right here. Apologize for that. Can you tell us where you were in the airport and what you saw and encountered . We were in the baggage area right at the baggage claim area number 3. They still are holding us. Were at the other ending of that room, backaggage area numb 2. We were standing there. It was the flight that had come in from atlanta. The carousel had just started and about 10 pieces came out. Everyone from the plane was there waiting for their luggage, so i dont know, maybe 200 people. I pulled my first piece of luggage off. As i said, i heard the first pop. I wasnt sure what it was. The driveup area is just adjacent to the luggage area and i thought at first maybe it was a car back firing or something, but it was quite loud. Then a heard a couple of more pops and people on either side of where i was standing fell to the ground, they had been shot. As i turned, i looked and saw the shooter standing in the middle of the kind of a hallway that runs adjacent to all of the baggage claims and he was holding a gunfiring. And thats when i and my wife and my motherinlaw, we fell immediately to the ground and he continued firing. I know that at one point he stopped and reloaded and continued firing again. There were just horrific it was a horrific scene. The people that were killed were right next to where we were. One gentleman who was shot they were almost i think all of them were shot in the head. The one that was right next to me and my wife took my motherinlaws sweater and put direct pressure on his wound, he had been shot in the face. He told her at that time that he was on coumadin so he was bleeding a great deal, there was blood everywhere. That was after they told us we could stand up. We didnt get up until a policeman stood right next to us and said that we could get up off the floor. Let me ask you first, is your family okay . Were all really shaken up, i think collectively. Theyre Still Holding probably id guess at least a hundred of us. I think everybody is just in shock. Its just been a wretched experience. Im so sorry you had to go through that. Can you tell us, did the gunman say anything . He said nothing. He said nothing. He just started firing. Inskrdiscriminateindiscrimin . Was he targeting anyone or were these indiscriminate shots . He was definitely targeting people in their heads, totally random. He shot people from the far left. Im looking at that area right now. There were elderly people that were shot and killed. Its just its tragic. Its just unbelievable. They were all people i dont know all of them, but many of them were coming down to ft. Lauderdale to get on cruise ships and take cruises. Some were planning on going today and others in the coming days. It was just total just awful, awful scene. John, no one knows what they would do in a situation like that. You know, its so unimaginable. What could you do . When this is happening right around you. Other than protect my wife and my motherinlaw, my wife got on top of my motherinlaw and was covering her. The gunman who was probably when i heard the first shot and saw him, im guessing maybe 15 feet from where we were. He was very close. But he came over and was in our area, like within feet of where we were, and still shooting people. When i looked, i was laying on the ground and looked to the side and just saw people bleeding out all around me. It was just a surreal scene. Its just unbelievable. Did he have a handgun or a rifle . Oh, absolutely it was a handgun. I saw it very clearly as he was firing the shots. I looked right at him. It was a black handgun. I looked right at him. You know, you kind of try processing, no, this cant be happening, this isnt real. Then when you realize it is, it just is an unreal scene. Just a few minutes ago we had to get back down on the ground and take cover because Something Else happened outside. They finally did just let us up. They have searched all of us. Weve been watching the situation unfolding outside. Its unclear whats been happening out there. In terms of the we understand the suspect was taken into custody. Did you see that . Tell me about the Police Response and how this shooter was neutralized. Well, it seemed like it took forever for anyone to get here. When i got on the ground, i called 911 immediately. I had my cell phone right there so i took a i made that call the second it happened. But when they finally got him, he finished shooting. Someone i heard said there were three clips. I know there were at least two. He was walking away and thats when the police said get down, get down. And thats when he got down. But he didnt finish shooting and just drop to the ground, he was walking away and thats when they stopped him. So he essentially surrendered once he was confronted by police . Yes. You say youre being held now still in the baggage claim area. Is it clear why . Are they processing everyone there as, you know, questioning people . Whats going on . I think its a combination of both. I think that weve been part of a mass shooting and they want to get im guessing they probably want to question us. I dont know why theyre not letting us go, i guess. We cant get our luggage or anything. Its all still sitting down there on the turnstile. Did you see where the shooter came from . Did he come from the outside door into the baggage claim or was it clear what direction he had arrived there from . I dont know for sure. When i saw him, he was standing in the aisleway kind of in front of baggage area number 1. He was facing towards baggage area number 3 where we were. So my thought was he probably had come in the door. Theres an exterior door where you can come in and if he did, came in that door and made his day down that hallway, but i dont know that for sure. I dont know if there are security cameras in here or not. But you and your family and other passengers had come out of the secure area into the baggage claim and were at the carousel when all this occurred . Thats correct. Theres an escalator that comes down from where the planes arrive and the baggage area is in the lower level. Its where the delta flights all come in, yes. This was the delta terminal, terminal 2, correct . Right, right. And you had arrived on an atlanta flight . We flew in from atlanta, yes. John, i dont know what to say. As i said, no one expects to ever be in a situation like that. This is fresh. And this may seem like a really stupid question but i have to know, how are you doing . How are you handling all of this and your family . How are you handling all t and your family . You know, it truly is only by the around the carousel. I was there. There were two people to my right. And my wife and my motherinlaw. The two people to my right had been shot. The person to my left had been shot. It was just by the grace of god that we werent. I dont know. I cant explain it. Im just so thankful. And other passengers tried to administer Emergency Medical Care to the wounded passengers . As soon as we could, as soon as we could get out, yes. Yeah. You mentioned im sorry, go ahead. The one gentleman that was next to me, he was conscious, and he told my wife that he was on coumadin. He had been shot in the head. And she took my motherinlaws sweater and pressed it and applied direct pressure to him. When they took him away rls he was still living
