We are expecting another operational red day. They determine it will take place sometime this afternoon. I imagine around 2 00 p. M. Were getting new information as far as what may have been the cause of death for at least half of the victims. On the latest, there were 36 victims located inside of the warehouse during the deadly fire. Thats the same number that we had yesterday. 85 of the structure has been searched by crews. A combination of crews with oakland fire, Alameda County Sheriffs Office and public works have been a part of the crews. For the remaining 15 of the structure that still needs to be searched, officials do not believe there are any more victims in this location. However, once again today were seeing a structural issue in this area. We dont know if there will be a work stoppage as we saw yesterday. There is no indication right now if there will be a work stoppage due to the structural issue. I spoke briefly this morning with the Sheriffs Office, and she said autopsies have been done on at least half of the victims so far. And of that group, all died as a result of smoke inhalation. A cause of death thats to be expected due to the magnitude of this fire. Virtually all the fires that we have, the cause of death is smoke inhalation, because the smoke gets you before any kind of flame gets you. So thats thats generally the problem. Reporter atf is still on the ground alongside fire and the Sheriffs Office to conduct an investigation, but it is too early to tell, guys, exactly what the cause of the fire is. There is a planned power outage still taking place. They had to bring a large crane into the area. They were worried it may affect the power lines so there is still a power outage. Authorities have only released the names of about half of the victims. Reporter sam, friends and family are dealing with the worst possible news this morning with the confirmation of those victims names. We do have a new photo of one of the victims. Among those who died, 20yearold mikala gregory from south San Francisco. Jennifer kinoa, 31. And 35yearold alex kasan. He recently moved from jersey city. Here is a photo of benjamin reynolds. He was 32 years old and lived in oakland. Another victim has been identified as 33yearold anne bolka from oakland. Her father posted on instagram she was recently transitioning to becoming a beautiful, happy woman. The Alameda County Sheriffs Department release five other victims names. They are both from oakland. 33yearold Chelsea Dolan from San Francisco and feral pines from berkeley. And 21yearold Jennifer Morris also lost their lives in the fire. We put our children to bed this every night. We created music. We created art. We opened our homes. In an exclusive interview with nbc bay area last night. He says it was no secret that it was in fact home. He says the city and the police knew that he, his wife, their three children and about 20 other people were living illegally in the warehouse, not zoned as residential space, collecting about 5,000 a month in rent. This is not profit. This is a loss. This is a mass grave. I am only here to say one thing, that i am incredibly sorry, and that everything i did was to take this a stronger, more beautiful community. And to bring people together. People didnt walk through those doors because it was a horrible place. But some former tenants and visitors have decried the conditions saying it was a catastrophe in the making, a labyrinth of furniture and structures. One stairway blocked and the other made of wooden pallets. I didnt do anything in my life ever that would lead me up to this moment. I am an honorable man. I am a proud man. Some of that was expressed in the form of anger. We are told that gatherers actually booed mayor libby schaaf when she addressed the crowd. Members of the bay areas Transgender Community held a vigil in the Castro District last night in los angeles. At least three of the people who died in the ghost ship fire were transgender. One pastor said the victims may have struggled to feel safe and that they belonged. Happening today, after the recent escape of two inmates from the Santa Clara County main jail, county officials are now reassessing their surveillance system. We were the first to bring you live breaking coverage of the escape on thanksgiving day. Right now the Santa Clara County board of supervisors is debating the addition of 224 additional surveillance cameras. A month ahead of the escape one of the supervisors proposed adding new cameras to the jail for the safety of those housed and who worked there. The officials did not recommend the cameras since theyll be remodelling the jail in the next few years. Looking forward to anything next year . We learned at a News Conference this morning in the 6 00 hour that investigators right now have resumed moving forward with that Recovery Process at the warehouse that burned in oakland. What we learned this morning was that at about 2 00 a. M. They began after this were serious concerns about the structural stability of the building. They were able to get back inside. They do not at this point expect to find any more dead victims, but again, this is a completely fluid situation. About 85 of the building has actually been searched. To confirm for you one more time, there have been 36 confirmed victims of the fire. Thats the same figure as we cited yesterday. 35 of them have been positively identified. Federal agents and those who lived in the warehouse revealed to us that there are only two Access Points to this huge warehouse. A main door and a makeshift emergency exit along one side. We made an animation of the building. You can see the two exits and also two sets of stairs. The fire started on the first floor, investigators say, but most of the victims were on the second floor, upstairs, where theyd gathered to hear music and to have a party. Witnesses say one of the staircases was created with wooden pallets. This is a photo taken by someone who had just been inside the warehouse. He described the stairs as hard to navigate and dangerous. While People Living in the warehouse say that there were rules because of fire concerns, inspectors say the rules are just not enough for some spaces. John mannen is a retired San Francisco fire captain and says fire inspectors can get overwhelmed in a city like oakland which is rife with unofficial Living Spaces and entertainment venues. You get a building that stays vacant long enough, catches the eye of a lot of people looking for a place to crash. And a lot of promoters of a lot of music events, they see the warehouses and actually track down the owners and pose the question, gee, do you want to rent your warehouse for a night. This time the suspects didnt get away. As we reported earlier in the week, kris, police say the folks allegedly used an suv to ram into the downtown Palo Alto Apple store. Seems like the suspects went around them and crashed into this wall. Several suspects are now still at large. Three plain clothed security guards watched the entrance of the apple store on university avenue. This is a picture a witness tweeted out early sunday morning showing a small suv police say was used in the heist, not just as a getaway vehicle but as a way to break in. The force of the collision puni punched a hole big enough to crawl through. Reporter police say the suv was a rental and it sits at Police Headquarters where investigators are processing it for evidence. Officers arrested two juveniles and two adults. 19yearold Shaquin Ferguson and erica white. Some people were able to crawl through the hole, go into the apple store and help themselves to all the electronics that were there. Wondering why the road was closed. I thought they were filming something at the apple store. Reporter police did find some of the stolen electronics. There seems to be a series of thefts from apple stores from around the bay. A number of us who live in the south bay were abuzz about this. This time morning, some earlymorning drivers cob affected in san jose by the closure of highway 87. Several lanes of southbound 87 will shut down for a few hours early tomorrow and thursday. They will be shut down from midnight to 4 00 in the morning so that caltrans can update signs. To other news across the bay area. An attempted burglary led to gunfire at a vallejo home. The Home Invasion happened yesterday afternoon on rainard lane near ascott parkway. Police say they got a call from a man who heard someone kick in his front door. The man grabbed a gun, shot the intruder and then climbed out a secondstory window to safety. Police say the intruder was taken to the hospital, where he died from that gunshot wound. He has not been identified. An East Palo Alto man is behind bars, charged in the death of a toddler. He lived with his girlfriend in this apartment on okeefe street. Police were called to the house a week ago because a 2yearold girl was reportedly having trouble breathing. The child then died at the hospital. After a lengthy investigation, police determined that foul play was a factor and they arrested the mothers livein boyfriend. We are following a developing story right now. Local and National Officials are on high alert today after an alarming call from overseas alerted them of a threat against a los angeles commuter train station. Jonathan gonzalez from our sister station in los angeles shows us what happened next. L. A. County sheriffs deputies are securing this location right now. The red line station here at universal city. Almost as soon as the flames flashed on tv screens, requests for donations began online. So far, the largest recipient is a San Francisco based nonprofit called Gray Area Foundation for the arts. 6,000 people have given more than 300,000 that the foundation is vowing it will devote to fire victims. Its really numbing but also really humbling to see the community that exists around this tragedy. The Gray Area Foundation is not managing the sudden flood of donations itself. Its bringing in the red cross to make sure that every penny thats contributed goes to someone who actually deserves the money. Everyone can trust that we are going to do this properly.
