I spoke with the principal here at Berkeley High who was in full support of the students rights to exercise their free speech. We saw that on display just moments ago. Thats the students chanting love trumps hate and not our president. Thats about half of the student body at the school. Some teachers accompanied the students while others stayed back for the students who decided not to participate in this walkout. We werent able to talk to any students directly to ask them why they arent fans of the incoming president during what one might consider one of the most polarizing elections of all time. The principal explained to me that the election of trump has struck a nerve with a good number of students in the student body. The students are showing various emotions. Theyre crying. Theyre angry. Theyre expressing feelings of being unsafe or feeling unsafe. There seems to be a great amount of solidarity around this issue. Reporter Others School such as bishop odowd and oakland tech are also doing walkouts. This school had another walkout earlier. They were being told this walkout will end on the campus of uc berkeley. This is what it looked like early this morning after news spread of Donald Trumps victory. A couple hundred people poured onto oaklands streets, lighting trash cans on fire. Banging out, smashing out windows. In berkeley, a protester who walked into the street was hit by a car. The protesters surrounded the car and vandalized it. If we look ahead to some of these economic issues, its helpful to look at what mr. Trump has said in the past using his own policy plans and campaign speeches. I think we can look ahead to some of the following. Oil prices could be unstable. President elect trump has talked about military action in the middle east, particularly against iran. Interest rates, mr. Trump has indicated he may not be willing to pay back american debt. If u. S. Debt is seen as risky the cost of borrowing goes up and so does yours. Tariffs. He says his administration will add a 40 tariffs brought from china. The h 1 b advise program. He said he would end that, no exceptions. In october he said his position was softening and then he said, no, hes going to end it forever. If youre here in Silicon Valley on that visa, you can stay here today, tomorrow and the next day. Nothing changes for now. Perhaps nothing changes at all on the issue because he has been so hard to pin down, this has been one of his more opaque promises. Ispromises not to end it and to keep it. This goes against what the rest of the Republican Party has basically wanted to do which is to continue h 1 bv. There are other areas of immigration up for contention, if you will, but not that one. There is a republican in the white house and a republican in the house and senate, but they are different kind of republicans. I think we have established that. A number of glitches we saw moving forward with the election day coverage. In the bay area there were a number of problems that our Investigative Unit uncovered. In Alameda County in oakland, workers tell us a ballot counting machine broke and was broken down for hours. Officials had to resort to a backup system, oldfashioned lock boxes to secure your vote. Similar problems with votecounting machines were reported at other polling locations in Alameda County where backup systems were also put into place. So, you can now recycle that 200plus page voter guide that you got in the mail. i or certainly headed in that direction. Lets start with proposition 63, which is about gun control. A vast majority. 63 of voters, said yes, banning the sale and possession of largecapacity ammunition magazines. The measure also requires background checks for ammo purchases and called for felony charges for gun theft. Next to the two measures to decide the future of the vallco mall. A majority of voters said no to measure c allowing Retail Entertainment but no office or residential spaces. A majority also said no to measure d, the Vallco Town Center specific plan, its called, which did allow housing and office space along with areas for schools and educational purposes. The golden state is the next two legalize recreational marijuana. Although this will not be instant gratification. Voters did approve the hotly contested prop 64. Nbc bay areas bob redell has more from berkeley. Reporter starting right now it is legal for you to smoke marijuana recreationally. However, it could be sometime before youre able to buy recreational pot, unless you already have a medical marijuana card. Eventually the state will issue licenses to sell recreationally, but thats just not going to happen until at least 2018. Proposition 64 does enact some restrictions. You must be 21 years of age to purchase and smoke weed. The amount you can possess will be limited to 28. 5 grams at a time. You can also grow and have up to six plants. But you wont be able to smoke it anywhere, just like smoking signatur cigarettes, youll be prohibited from smoking in Public Places and while driving or flying. The state will be able to put a 15 excise tax on the sale of weed in addition to a cultivation tax of growers of 10 an ounce, which is expected to raise a billion dollars each fore for the golden state. Bob redell, nbc bay area news. Californians also approved an increase tax on cigarettes. Proposition 56 passed with 63 of the vote compared to 37 who said no. It increases the cigarette tax by 2 a pack. Most of that money from that tax would go to Health Care Programs and research as well as tobacco prevention and control. As we continue, sorry, kris, to touch upon the highlights from last night on the local level. San jose city voters weighed in on pension reform with the police force reeling from lack of resources. Measure f is passing. It would end a fouryearlong battle surrounding city pension and Retirement Benefits and would essentially roll back some of the deepest cuts made when voters passed measure b in 2012. Assuming the numbers hold it finalized a deal brokered between the city of san jose and 11 of its unions. The video didnt show the police force because it affects other City Employees as well. This morning we have a new president elect. It is donald trump. Reaction from his opponent and new york city as the country looks toward the future. As you probably heard, donald j. Trump will be the next president of the United States. It was an astonishing victory, a massive repudiation of his opponent and the establishment. He was congratulated and i think they resolved to Work Together, which is exactly what this country needs to get this current president and the president elect and others who are in leadership positions to help unify and heal the country. Conway said the victory last night proved that millions of americans agreed with trumps stand against a socalled rigged system and that the campaign had a cordial conversation also with Hillary Clinton after her concession. In the south bay, demonstrations at San Jose State University where more than 400 students crowded outside their dorms giving a series of spontaneous speeches. At one point a fight broke out between protesters and several Trump Supporters who showed up carrying protrump signs and an american flag. It was quickly stopped by police. They made a run for it. They sprinted as fast as they could, just away from the crowd. Luckily they had a good enough head start because there was maybe 20, 30 people chasing them right after, trying to like basically attack them. It was like to really do some damage. That is not an observation of freedom of free speech, we should say. Hundreds of students protested at other California University campuses following trumps victory as well. Police say at least 500 people swarmed around ucla early this morning. And smaller protests at uc santa cruz, yoirvine and san diego. Pop. Prepare to say more for soda in three more bay area cities. Soda taxes in San Francisco, oakland and albany passed. 62 of voters in San Francisco said yes. The first time the ballot measure was voted on, it failed. That was several years ago. Oakland had 62 as well, which said yes to measure hh. Lastly in albany, the greatest margin, 71 of voters said yes on a 1 cent per ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks. The taxes apply to soda, sweetened tea and other sports drinks with sugar. Voters here in california have spoken. They want to speed up the Death Penalty rather than abolish it outright. Prop 62 which would have replaced Capital Punishment for murder with life in prison without parole garnered 46 of the vote, failing. More people did say yes to prop 66, which would speed up the Death Penalty process, with 51 of people voting in favor of that. Almost 750 inmates on californias death row. A San FranciscoSupervisor Scott Wiener will fill the senate seat that mark leno is leaning vacant. The district covers San Francisco and northern san mateo county. Kris, we have new details on a massive fire that we covered earlier on today in the bay. It erupted at a Plastic Recycling plant. The blaze started about 3 30 this morning at epic plastics. Crews are still fighting the flames right now. Officials say it could take days to extinguish all of them. Firefighters have not determined a cause for that fire. All lanes on highway 4 are open after a pileup yesterday morning. It was the aftermath of a car chase that ended in a crash. It started when Contra Costa County sheriffs deputies spotted a stolen vehicle and the car took off. The crash on highway 4 after the chp laid out spike strips to stop it. Several vehicles were caught in the crash. The driver, also caught after the crash. At this time we are unsure how many people were hurt. A frightening situation in the north bay, kris. A violent Home Invasion in san rafael. It happened less than a mile from a local elementary school, dixie elementary, just after midnight yesterday. The Sheriffs Office says three men got inside of a home through an unlocked door. One was carrying a gun and the other had a baseball bat. The suspects rounded up the family, stole their cash and elec trofrp electronics and jewelry and got away. Just a hoax after two women claimed that they found a newborn baby on the sidewalk in east oakland. There was a baby, but the story was not real. A young woman and her sister took the newborn to a hospital yesterday morning saying that they found the baby wrapped in a cloth. Turns out one of the sisters gave birth to the baby girl but was not aware that she could surrender her to a hospital without getting into trouble. Eventually, the girls admitted to concocting that story, and this morning the baby is safe in the care of child protective services. New at 11 00, gopro has recalled its karma drone after just 16 days on the market. Gopro is recalling all 2500 units sold of the new drone. The company says that a very small number of the drones lost power during operation. Thats what led to the recall. Owners can return the drones for a full refund, but replacements are not being offered. Gopro has not said when or even if karma will return to store shelves. Developing news from our Investigative Unit. A federal judge is siding with the city of San Francisco in a lawsuit that airbnb filed. They could face hefty fines and criminal penalties if they continue to allow users to post listings that are not registered with the city. Airbnb sued San Francisco to block the call but a federal judge denied the move. San francisco right now only issues penalties to individual hosts not the actual online companies. Thats what spurred the action in the first place. The decision could change that but the judge is asking both sides to provide Additional Information next week at a hearing. The San Francisco library is missing 150,000 books, and they just want them back. People have checked out the books, have not turned them back in. The library says those fines would add up to more than 4 million, but what it really wants is just to get the books back so they can recheck them out. Its offering an incentive.
