Its used by hundreds of commuters daily. The terminal is one of the busiest in the new york city area. The station suffered major structural damage as emergency crews rushed to the scene to help the injured. People were getting out. There were definitely people who were very injured. I saw a lot of people with gashed heads and blood. Reporter early reports indicate the train ran through the bumper stop at the end of the track and came to rest between the stations waiting area and the platform. More than 100 people were injured, many critically. There were approximately 250 people on the train at this time of day. We are still determining the cause of the accident. Reporter rail service has been suspended in and out of hoboken which is just across the hudson river from new york city. Mark barger, nbc news. The details are so fluid in such a chaotic scene. Hoboken is new jerseys transit fifth busiest station. There are more than 15,000 boardings there per day. Its the final stop for several train lines and a transit point for many commuters on their way to new york city. Following the developing story in the santa cruz mountains. The loma fire exploded overnight, nearly doubling in size. Hundreds of homes remain evacuated. We have Team Coverage of the fire. Anthony slaughter is tracking the weather conditions firefighters are dealing with right now. We start with nbc bay areas bob redell who is live in the santa cruz mountains. Has the fire grown this much again, or maybe now crews are getting a better look at what theyre dealing with . Reporter sam, no. The fire rapidly grew in size overnight. The area is very steep and inaccessible. In spite of their best efforts there are some injures the firefighters cannot get to and that are, in fact, going to burn. Given the fact that we have this weather pattern of low winds right now calfire believes they have a window of opportunity to get a lot of work done on the loma fire before the winds are expected to pick up tomorrow afternoon. We just returned from gilroy where calfire had the 7 00 a. M. Briefings to go over the plan of attack for today. They updated the latest numbers. The loma fire has burned over 3800 acres and is still just 22 contained. There are over 1700 firefighters working the front lines in 24hour shifts. Calfire is waiting on a couple of hundred more firefighters to arrive. A battalion chief tells us last night was productive because of the lower temps and higher humidities. The crews were able to establish more fire lines and perform some burnout operations to take out some of the fuel. The goal is to have the loma fire contained by monday, seven days after it started. Given the extreme fire behavior caused by the drought its hard to say when the firefighters will turn the corner on the fire. Its hard this year as well as last year to say that. Its the fact that this vegetation that we call fuel is so dry. It doesnt matter. We could have real cool weather, higher humidities, and that wind would promote that fire. Thats something that characteristically in the years passed, higher humidities, lower temperatures, the fire will lay down. Its just not doing that. Reporter calfire has lifted the evacuation orders for people in the Santa Cruz County side of the fire. The evacuation orders are still in effect for the Santa Clara County side. As the fire still threatens 325 structures. Theyre still investigating what caused the fire. It started this past monday afternoon. Tonight at 7 00 there will be a community meeting. Officers are questioning folks at an encampment after the body of a man was found on tuesday. Two others died the exact same way in san jose. Crime stoppers is offering a 1,000 reward for any information leading to an arrest. Protesters want their message heard. Overnight demonstrators took to the strip mall where a black man was killed by a police officer. The shooting happened on tuesday in el cajon about 15 miles east of san diego. We are also learning more details about that shooting. Police say the object that the victim pulled from his pocket was a vape smoking device, not a weapon. Investigators say the two officers shot the man only one minute after arriving on scene. There is video of the shooting, but it is not being released by investigators at this point. The victims name is alfred olan olango. He is a photographing frrefugio a former teacher showed up at a high school, he was arrested for violating a restraining order. The School Called for a shelter in place action with students and staff staying indoors until police arrived. District Officials Say they were responding to the trespassing of this former social Science Teacher arnold glaubitt seen in this photo when he taught at piedmont from 2005 to 2012. He was described as a possible stalker trying to contact former coworkers, so persistently and aggressively that the district obtained a restraining order. A prior arrest did not stop the unwelcome visits or what they called his unpredictable, erratic behavior. Of course youre concerned that it would escalate into something more than it has at this point. Reporter Law Enforcement sources tell us glaubitt was arrested at the school on september 22nd also for violating a court order and was released just this morning when he apparently headed back to the school and was arrested again. On a website, glaubitt claims he is the victim of gang stalking and mobbing when he tries to talk to former coworkers, mainly to warn them about what he calls rampant child prostitution he has observed. School Officials Say theyve been told glaubitt has a court date on october 8th. Keeping drunk drivers from getting back on the road. There is a tough new law in california aiming at keeping people safe. That law, signed by Governor Brown yesterday, requires convicted drunk drivers to install breathalyzers in their cars. We spoke with a woman who lost her son to a repeat drunk driver, and she has been fighting for this bill to be passed for a decade. My motivation was that nobody would endure the pain that my family has endured with the loss of matt. In the 25 states where its been in place for a number of years theyve seen the death rate from duis reduced by about 40 . The law goes into effect in 2018. A key change for the states rape law. No longer a tenyear statute of limitations. The bill was signed by Governor Brown yesterday. When the new law takes effect next year it will only pertain to cases which have not yet expired.
