A fire raging in Southern California with high winds fueling that blaze and burning 25 miles north of Santa Barbara. For days, the fire burned through brush and other fuel that hasnt burned in about 70 years. Well take you down on the ground. This is Patrick Healy from los angeles. Good morning, from the Santa Barbara coast, day three of the sherpa fire. Important news for the bay area, if youre planning on taking 101 down to los angeles, the freeway behind us is back open again after it had to be closed for a second overnight in a row because the flames of this fire simply got so close to the freeway. Now, this fire has been driven largely down in Santa Barbara where winds come up very strongly after dark out of the north pushing the fire down the canyons towards the coast and then during the course of the night, the winds eventually began to diminish. By daybreak, its calm again and the fire activity slows markedly. Then picks up again the next night. But a wild card now. The weather is changing in Southern California. We expect the temperatures to increase markedly today and humidity also to drop. So that on top of the concern that the sundowners will come back again later, a big concern about the growth of this fire. Talking to incident command, they tell us that they are optimistic and they can box in this fire on three of the four sides. The concern, though, is that southeast exposure is in wilderness area and they are having difficulty fighting a fire there and thats the exposure that is towards the more populated slopes of Santa Barbara. Now, one other concern up in these hills is a very famous ranch which was the western white house during the presidency of ronald reagan. The initial start of the fire at the rampnch was very close to t reagan ranch. At this point, its not believed that the reagan ranch is in danger. However, i talked to the ranch director and they have foam, water, they have been doing removing some fuels from the area so they are ready if there is another change in the wind. So the big story today will be to watch the temperatures and to see if those sundowners come back tonight. Fire command tells us that this fire back in that wilderness area could burn for a considerable period of time before they can fully contain it. For now, reporting from the Santa Barbara coast, Patrick Healy for nbc bay area news. Patrick, thank you. Lets bring in kari hall who has been tracking the wind and the heat.
