This is going on off Center Street and rheem boulevard. Adjacent to moraga road. Damien, are they going house to house trying to restore that gas . Reporter well, theyre beginning to. Its going to be quite a process here. 2500 homes here still remain without gas at this point. Let me point something out. That is the light pole that fell into the sinkhole. You can see that the pedestrian light is actually at ground level at this point. Were getting a closeup tour of the damage right now. Crews worked throughout the tight to repair the gas line, but turning the gas back on will take some time. Crews were up all night making repairs to the 4inch gas distribution line on rheem boulevard. Right now were in the process of doing some interim repairs. That will allow for the gas to get to our customers. Reporter pg e brought out more than 200 workers who have to go out home to home, shut off and bleed out their gas line so they can be repressurized and allow gas to flow again safely. It is a process but thats why we have so many people coming from around the state to make sure we can do this job as safely and quickly as possible. Reporter it forced many businesses to close today, including this day care center. I brought my little boy to school today and they closed down because of the repairs, so the school shut down. Theres no heat, theres no electricity. So now what . So now work from home today. Reporter once crews repressurize the gas line, workers have to return to each home and reignite the pilot light. No doubt a long day for the residents of moraga. That means 2500 homes will have to be visited not once, but twice by pg e workers. Damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. In case you couldnt tell from the light pole in the sinkhole, moraga got hit really hard by this storm. Experts are being called in to suspect the soil off of augusta drive. The families left over the weekend voluntarily. Heres a building thats finally coming down. The damage started six years ago when the el nino storm chipped away at a cliff in pacifica and the apartment complex has been sitting there waiting to be demolished. That last inch now. Bob redell is joining us live from pacifica. Bob, i think it was about 25 left going in today. Hows the progress coming . Reporter well, sam and laura, the 20unit apartment complex that used to stand here overlooking the Pacific Ocean you can see is no more. Demolition crew working on behalf of the city started taking down the structure on saturday. The workers hope to have this plot of land leveled and cleared by tomorrow or wednesday, depending on the weather. You might recall the city red tagged and evacuated this apartment complex back in 2010 as the cliff began to erode and part of the apartment complex teetered on the edge. This property was supposed to come down much sooner but its owner declared bankruptcy and hasnt been able to pay the roughly 200,000 in demolition costs, which the cityopes to some day recoup on behalf of taxpayers. So the demolition crew will take out the rest of the wood structure, the walls and that sort of thing and leave the foundation in place to help stabilize this until the city can find a permanent solution. Weve been in talks with the army corps of engineers about the possibility of shoring up the cliff edge. Our concern after the buildings are down is that the streets could be the next at risk as set. Of course thats our asset and we want to protect it, so were actively in talks with the army corps. The demolition crew brought in a large crane to retrieve some debris that did fall. Last month the apartment complex to the left which youre looking at now live, it was demolished and you could see the land was leveled and cleared. If you pan back over, you see 320, which is right behind me being taken down. Over there is 310, the apartment complex Still Standing but that was yellow tagged in january because this is also at risk. Some residents of 310 will appeal that yellow tag ruling at a hearing that is scheduled for next week. Reporting live in here in pacifica, bob redell. And we are finally drying out after that really wet weekend. Lets take a peek at the golden gate bridge. On your left, downtown san jose. On your right a little cloudy but some sun trying to poke through that gray. Lets bring in meteorologist kari hall with a look at our forecast. Yes. Now that the rain is over lets take a look at some of these numbers and how were doing. For the month of march in santa rosa, this is what we get on average, about 5 inches in santa rosa, San Francisco about 3. 25 inches and san jose normally gets about 2 inches. This is what weve had so far and be findful were only halfway through the month. Santa rosa had over 9 inches of rain for the first 14 days of march. San francisco had over 6 inches of rain and were bringing those rainfall totals in some spots almost close to double what they normally get as we go through this month. And then in oakland, we are over the amount of normal, also in livermore and san jose. So looking at the rainfall year, we are doing quite well, at least about 100 in many spots. Well talk about those rainfall totals and what else to expect as we go through the rest of the week. Thats coming up a little bit later. As you said, those totals certainly mean flooding. Were trying to find out when a South Bay Campground is going to reopen. Over the weekend 200 people had to evacuate because of flooding fears. The thousand trails campground is closed after relentless rain forced a nearby creek to flood. Campers had to quickly pack up and get the heck out of dodge. Some evacuated first to a nearby fire station, turning it into a temporary rv lot. Later a nearby church became a makeshift shelter. Some evacuees were surprised how fast the waters rose. I had to hook up and yell and shout to have them help me. They keep smiling but i dont feel safe. Part of the reason for the flooding, the reservoir directly above the creek is now completely full. Water is now cascading down that reservoir spillway. And flooding has cut off access to a popular park. The flooding was caused by that runoff from that creek you mentioned. This is what it looks like at Christmas Hill park in gilroy. Many people came out just to catch a glimpse. They said they have not seen this much water on the road in several years. The Gilroy Fire Department is monitoring the situation in case evacuations could be needed, but they suspect theyre past the danger point now. Theyre federally endangered with just a few thousand left in the ocean. Joe rosato jr. Takes us to a Bay Area Laboratory where the population is getting a boost. Reporter in the world of science, the idea of making babies isnt exactly romantic. We are making abalone babies. They are going excontinuity in the wild very rapidly. Reporter there are only around 5,000 white abalone left in the ocean mainly in Southern California, so researchers here are now taking matters into their own hands. Were breeding white abalone in captivity to make more of them so they can put them out in the wild. Reporter in a special oneday event the Lab Scientists selected all their white abalone separating the females from the males. The muddy water and debris flowed into a mans driveway and garage. The problem was caused by a nearby drainage ditch. City crews did clean up the street and unclog that ditch but nar b neighbors are worried it could happen again. We saw all kinds of crazy things weekend. But now we turn the page. A new week and a new forecast. Lets check in with kari hall. Our weather is about to do a 180 here because we had such a soggy weekend and were getting ready for much warmer temperatures and some sunshine. But in sunshian francisco the ss yet to break out here. We are still waiting on that. Looking at how much rain we had just this month, on average we get close to 5 inches of rain in santa rosa. San francisco gets 3. 25 and in livermore over 2 inches of rain. Thats the average amount. Look at what weve had so far and keeping in mind today is only the 14th day of the month. We had over 9 inches of rain in santa rosa. San francisco had almost double the amount of rain they normally get during this month and oakland had a little bit more than normal. Were making some progress in many spots, but looking at the percentages of average, we are at 152 in livermore and san jose and then quite a bit more for the North Bay North of San Francisco. If we look at the numbers for the rainfall year, we had over 29 inches of rain so far between july 1st and now, and were at about 98 of average. Some spots are above average, so once again making some progress here with all of that rain. Now temperatures are in the mid to upper 50s as we dry things out. We still have some clouds overhead. As we take a look at that sevenday forecast at the bottom of the screen, youll see how our temperatures warm up this week, but still a little bit on the cool side today in livermore. Well have a mix of sun and clouds and high temperatures reaching near 60 degrees. A look at all the microclimates. Gilroy up to 61 degrees. In pacifica 57 degrees. Well still have upper 50s along the immediate coast, 60s inland. Not a wide range in temperatures and well see that warming trend over the next several days. Also be mindful that we do have this High Surf Advisory that continues until 5 00 today. The storm systems we have for the weekend really churning up those waves so we may have some strong rip currents today and some large shore breaks. We are getting ready for a change in this pattern. Weve had the jetstream lined up right over the bay area carrying in those storm systems, but then as this lifts to the north, with it will go our chances of rain for the rest of the week as High Pressure begins to move in. High pressure does give us some sunshine and a drying and warming trend as we go through the rest of the week. So well be in the mid to upper 70s all across the bay area. San francisco looking at lower 70s there. Up to 77 degrees in the north bay on thursday. This weekend, well bring it back down a few more degrees, a few more clouds mixing in and then a chance of some showers heading into sunday as our highs will be in the mid to upper 60s. Right now it looks like that chance of rain will be slight. Until then we continue on with this dry weather. Sam and laura. Well take those 70degree days. Thank you. Up next at 11 00, its more than just a stop for selfies. Well take a look at the statue that will watch over the summers olympics in rio. Its not too early to start getting excited. Were now less than five months away from the start of the Olympic Games in brazil and that cool music. Strike up the music. Only half of the tickets have been sold. The train takes you on a 50minute ride through an urban forest, the largest in the world. At the top, the tallest religious statue in the world, one that inspires thousands of tourists each year to make the climb. But a spokesman for the archdiocese says you lose a lot if you only come for a selfie. Its actually a catholic sanctuary so people come here not only to take selfies and pictures, but they come here also to have an experience with god. The vistas below could melt the most hardened heart and even at a distance it whispers of the brazilian faith of transcend ans. It means hunch back in portuguese but it has a new meaning.
