Will involve the fbi, the local u. S. Attorneys office and the Harney County sheriff. Theyll speak about last nights confrontation with antigovernment protesters taking place at the chamber of commerce there in oregon not far away from where this confrontation took place last night that resulted in two members being shot. One survived with a minor wound. The second, however, died. One confirmed that it was her father who was shot and killed. He was a rancher from arizona, often spoke on behalf of the protesters during the threeweek armed occupation of the wildlife refuge in oregon. Law enforcement also arrested nine members of the group including the bundy brothers. They are who led the protest over how federal government manages public land. Yesterday the group left to spread their message in another town. Along the way the fbi and Oregon State Police conducted a traffic stop on the group. Thats when this was this confrontation. Five were arrested on the spot, two more nearby, an eighth in arizona and theres now a ninth. As were speaking, i want to send it to that news conference. This looks like the special agent in charge. For the past month the fbi, along with our partners with the Harney County sheriffs office, the Oregon State Police and the many other state, federal and local agencies we have been working with have had a very deliberate and measured response. We have worked diligently to bring the situation at the wildlife refuge to a peaceful end, but because this is an Ongoing Investigation there are many specifics we cannot talk about at this time. There are still people illegally occupying the mallier refuge at this point. I will say that the armed occupiers have been given ample opportunity to leave the refuge peacefully. They have been given opportunities to negotiate. As outsiders to oregon, they have been given the opportunity to return to their families and to work through the normal Legal Process to air their preventigr. Instead, these individuals have chosen to threaten and intimidate the america they profess to love and through criminal actions bring these consequences upon themselves. Yesterday the fbi with our partners took the first steps to bring this occupation to a conclusion. We worked to ensure that we could do so peacefully and safely out of harms way of the citizens here in the county. Removing the threat of danger from anybody who might be present. We continue to work to empty the refuge of those who continue to illegally occupy the refuge and remove them in the safest way possible. Eight people were arrested and one man died yesterday as we attempted to take him into custody. Because there is an Ongoing Investigation by the Major Crimes Team on part of the Oregon State Police involving this process, i cannot comment on the details or on the specifics. I would, however, ask for your patience as this shooting investigation goes through this normal outside process. At the appropriate time, the medical Examiners Office will release the identity of the decedent and the Oregon State Police will then be able to address the details of the event. Let me be clear. It is the actions and choices of the armed occupiers of the refuge that has led us to where we are today. They had ample opportunity to leave the refuge peacefully. And as the fbi and our partners have clearly demonstrated, actions are not without consequences. Containment roadblocks are now in place around the refuge. The disruption to the good people of Harney County that they have had to endure the last several months will continue for a while longer. If the people on the refuge want to leave reporter so as you hear the special agent in charge mentioning they have shut down one of the entrances to the wildlife refuge, there are still protesters holed up inside. We understand that the fbi and other Law Enforcement have been giving the remaining protesters an opportunity to leave. Last night it has been reported that a caravan of cars carrying women left the area. Yeah, now that theres no women and children here, the fbi can kill everybody. Is that what youre worried will happen . Is that what youre worried will happen . Thats what i keep hearing over and over and over again. I hear peaceful resolution, and then i hear everybody asking are you worried that theyre going to kill everybody. You tell me. Reporter weve also seen video of a backhoe that the armed protesters have put in front of one of the other entrances to this wildlife refuge in oregon. According to what we heard, they want to keep any Law Enforcement from trying to storm the area. So youve got our understanding two choke points. Law enforcement is at one, the protesters are at the other. As you heard that special agent in charge, they are asking those remaining protesters to leave. What happened yesterday with that traffic stop is what they referred to as their first step in trying to end this armed occupation thats been going on for three weeks now. Of course well have more tonight at 5 00. In the mean time, bob redell, back to you. All right, bob, thank you. I asked him just now how important todays discussion is to him and to his neighbors. I understand theyre about to give millions of dollars to the local government. But whats important to me is the fact that im now homeless and i need help too. And honestly, im not the only person. Theres at least 20 people in the building im at that are busy moving their stuff in and out all day long that are also affected. Were hurting. You know, the hole can wait, we cant. That includes a sinkhole and damaged sea wall which have still closed a stretch of beach boulevard by santa maria and also the pacifica pier. Owners had to come up with a repair plan to avoid demolition of the building which we understand is set to happen to two of those buildings. Mchenry says he is flustered, you can feel it when you talk to him. He says that pg e crews have been Walking Around the apartment complex but they dont tell him when theyre going to turn off the power. Well tell you about a church going to Great Lengths to keep people warm this winter. And were enjoying more sunshine as we take a live look at tiburon but this will not last long. Well talk about the clouds and the rain in the weekend forecast. Thats coming up. Lk. Some south bay churches are stepping up and leadi sometimes you have to walk the talk. Some south bay churches stepping up by leading by example. The issue theyre taking on is homelessness. Garvin thomas is show us in todays bay area proud. There are all sorts of ways that churches help the homeless. Each one praise worthy in its own way. But when a group of churches instead of reaching out invites them in, well, that sounds like a bay area proud. Our ministry is simply to be present. Practicing is always harder than preaching. To be simply present. Even those who do it for a living, like father Brendan Mcguire will tell you that. Its why then hes so proud of what his holy spirit congregation is doing these days. Or, more accurately, these nights. After the last sermon of the day is done, father brendans parishioners walk his talk right into the church and place 15 cots among the pews for 15 homeless women who, for this month at least, will call this house of worship their home. Because if your brother, sister were in trouble, youd open your house. Father brendan says the motivation to do more about homelessness in his Community Came after a chance meeting with a homeless man in portland, oregon. He was about 19 years old. Hed been on the streets for five or six years. And i was at one point shocked, saddened, and deeply moved by that experience. So father brandon brought this idea to his congregation and they ran with it. 500 parishioners have signed up to volunteer, offering not just shelter, but food and a host of other services. At least for a moment, we are going to try and make your life a lot better than it has been. And thats our gift. There is, however, a legal limit of 30 days they can provide temporary shelter, so holy spirit formed a coalition with three other south bay churches to take turns sheltering the women this winter. Father brendan would love to see even more come on board. It would change us. It would change the valley. Silicon valley wouldnt be the same if every house of worship chose to help. Until then, he says, his church will continue doing what it can, giving a lucky few the chance to sleep under saints, watched over by angels. This is not the first time that churches have opened their doors to the homeless. In fact there was a group of churches that used to do it in the south bay up until ten years ago. The folks at holy spirit, though, think it was about time they did it again. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Well, lets talk to meteorologist kari hall. We have some blue sky behind you. Yeah, its a beautiful day. Dont get too used to this, weve had it all week long. You know the weather is going to change before the weekend. As we take a live look now from mt. Hamilton, we see those clear skies today. Once again well have some clouds moving in and the rain wont be far behind. Its now 55 degrees in San Francisco, 57 in the peninsula. As we drop in on the east bay, we do have a couple of spots that have made it up to 60 like newark, dublin is 57 and brentwood at 55. Were at 53 degrees now in the north bay, so as we go through the rest of the afternoon, a lot of sunshine in the south bay. A few more clouds moving in tonight, but our high temperatures reaching into the mid60s and then for tonight mostly clear skies and lows dropping back into the 50s. Now, were up to almost 70 degrees tomorrow, so well have one more warm day, but i think there will be a few more clouds in the mix. And then on friday, thats when the rain comes in. Our temperatures will be cooling off a few degrees all across the board and highs reaching into the upper 50s in the north bay on friday and also in the east shore were up to 61 degrees. 59 in the trivalley. This is the way we paint the picture as we get a view of what the radar could look like. By tomorrow during the evening commute, we could have some rain moving into the north bay, but the rest of the bay area seeing those clouds rolling in. As we go into thursday night and friday, its still raining in the north bay. While we have yet to see it south of San Francisco, there we are at lunchtime on friday, we see some more scattered showers moving all across the bay area. Into the evening on friday, its still raining, but its very hit or miss and then the rain gives us a break for a little while throughout the day on saturday, but well still have clouds lingering and it will be cool. Heading into sunday well have another weather system moving in that could bring in some rain, especially for the south bay. But the models are pushing that low farther to the south. Well see how that all pans out, but it looks like at least we will have some scattered rain between saturday morning and saturday evening. And the rain outlook is giving us less and less with each run, so at this point it looks like we could have up to a half of an inch of rain. Then the farther north you go, there will be some heavier rainfall totals. Over in the sierra, we are going to get another good amount of snow coming down, but our temperatures the past few days there have been very warm, reaching into the upper 40s to lower 50s. Well, it will be cooling off heading into the weekend, staying below freezing as that snow comes down and were looking at in some of the Higher Elevations anywhere from a foot, maybe a foot and a half. A look at the weekend forecast. It will be cooling off. A lot of Outdoor Events going on. Maybe youre planning to go to super bowl city. It will be a mixture of sun and clouds and youll probably be wearing a heavy jacket all day long and then youll need rain jackets on sunday with some scattered showers moving through. It looks like that cool weather kind of sticks around for a little while as we head into the start of next week. Scott and kris. Thank you, kari.
