Learning the fire claimed the total of three lives. Two victims identified this morning. Nbc bay area Stephanie Chuang in middletown this morning. You spoke to one of the people who knew one of the victims very well. Reporter she heard early this morning she heard from Sheriff Deputies, but its not getting any easier. Were into day six and people are getting news of the latest death and making this a lot tougher. I want to say we are back in middletown and standing in front of ro sa gonzalezs house, or whats left of it. We met her in the Evacuation Center in calistoga today and yesterday. We said wed come and check it out. You really cant tell what is standing. Just some trucks and foundation and some of the garage. Meanwhile Lake County Office confirmed two bodies around 8 30 last night. A body found presumed to be bruce burns and based on a second location, the sheriff says the other body is expected to be the body of leonard neft. He told his wife saturday afternoon he didnt smell smoke and wasnt going to leave then moments later realized he needed to get out and try to drive a little and hike out of the area. Now, we found a worker at the middletown chevron station. She says early this morning lake county Sheriff Deputies told her about finding neft. She says he used to own that store and convinced her to work for him years ago and would still visit after selling it. She recalled the last time she saw him just three weeks ago. I didnt know it was the last time to see him. Just kept running back skb forth to each other and i didnt want to let go of him. And i wanted that day i wanted to take a picture of us holding each other tight. Man, i wish i had my ipod, take a picture. Now finding out hes gone its really hitting me hard. Reporter shes still grappling with the reality of that. But someone here to help with the emotion is harry with International Canine Search and rescue. Hes down from portland for his first day at the valley fire. He says to help find missing people and pets. He says his border kcollies specialize in grief therapy helping those who have lost loved ones. Its sad whether a bombing, earthquake, drowning, its all sad. Were here to help maybe give these people some closure. Reporter back here live youre seeing some of the devastation, but there are a lot of areas still too dangerous for people to go into. I just got off the phone with harry. He said hes on standby and learned he may have to come back to the area when the fire is more under control. As for leonard neft presumed again to be one of the two found dead last night, calita described him as very generous, loving and would do anything for those close to him and wanted to honor him and thats why she spoke with us today. She said he also still really loved the store. Shes going to continue to try to keep that store open because she believes he would be proud the way she and others there are helping those who need it here in middletown. Stephanie, thank you. We know that strong winds and dry conditions played a huge role in the spread of the valley fire, but now were learning a beetle infestation may have made things worse as well. Yes, getting closer. And the weather looks like one that will be really heating up compared to what we had this week. Were starting out now in the 60s and 70s as we head toward the lunchtime hour. And a lot of sun will be breaking out across the bay area. And expect a high of 75 degrees in the east bay. 78 in the peninsula and the south bay up to 80 degrees today. San francisco warming up to 71 degrees and 79 degrees in the north bay. And our wind now shifting direction once again coming in from the north. We havent had much of a wind just yet. Winds coming in from the north and northwest at about 10 to 15 miles an hour today. Nothing really significant there. And we continue to see that there may be a little bit more wave action going on along the coast, so some higher wave there if youre heading to the beach. In livermore going hour by hour at lunchtime its 73 degrees. Mostly sunny, a great afternoon. And with some highs in the low 80s it comes back down into the 60s by 8 00. And we see mostly clear skies throughout the evening and overnight. And i think that will be the case as we get a look at the fog on the bay, the expected cloud cover throughout the afternoon we have mostly clear skies. And then into the night we dont see as much of the clouds rolling back into San Francisco. And so we may start out tomorrow morning with mostly clear skies and then just some minor amounts of fog or some low visibility just along the immediate coast. And then the inland areas staying mostly clear. And as that area of low pressure that brought the rain yesterday and some record amounts of rain for parts of the north bay, were getting ready for some dry weather heading into the weekend. So as High Pressure builds it will cause less of an onshore flow and hot, hazy weather and moderate air quality. It may get a little bit low at times in areas near the valley fire and inland valleys will be warming up into the 90s and 100 degrees. Heres a look at the microclimates and what to expect this weekend. In the peninsula it will be 83 degrees tomorrow. 87 on saturday. And sunday up to 92 degrees. In the trivalley get ready for highs to hit 100 degrees. And the north bay from 86 degrees tomorrow to 94 on saturday. And sunday up to 98 degrees. Weve got a lot of events going on around the bay area, and one of them in san jose the bike Party Happening tomorrow night. We continue our coverage of the people standing in front of Grocery Stores asking for money not representing real charities. Well explain lots more. Grocery stores in los gatos for welcome back. We have heard so much from you about our investigation into these fellas in front of Grocery Stores. They were in los gatos for years claiming to collect cash for veterans, but it would appear they were ripping you off. Vicky nygun has been looking into this, but they left. We know they just moved to another Shopping Center. We were first told about those men posing as veterans and we know now theyre not affiliated with the veterans administration. Reporter frustrated viewers reached out to us to say the men are still collecting money for gift a vet. This time a few miles away. They wanted to know why. And so did we. Thats bob back on the job in front of a whole foods store. New location, same old story. Well put security deposits on apartments for a veteran before their benefits kick in. Reporter we first introduced you to bob last month after viewer and air force veteran bill hampshire called. I think its a scam, yes. Reporter posing as veterans, they told our hidden cameras the cash they collect goes to help homeless and disabled vets. Majority of the funds that go into this box will provide outreach money to get the veterans who are living outdoors to the v. A. Reporter not so our investigation found. Yeah. Its down right now. Reporter in fact, the men couldnt provide any evidence they were helping any one but themselves. You said you donate 100 of your cash donations to veterans. Your colleague said he gets to keep 40 of that. Can you talk to us a little more about how youre actually helping veterans . After we exposed gift a vet members lying about working with the county Veterans Court and the office of veterans services, you responded, sending emails about other groups set up in front of bay area stores. You even shared pictures telling us your suspicions about solicitors asking for money for homeless women and children. Turns out a group doesnt have to be a registered charity or nonprofit to stand in front of a store and ask for money. Hi, would you like to donate to a journalist . Would you like to donate to a journalist . In fact, i can stand here and ask for cash for any cause and management cant kick me out. And this plaza, the pruneyard, set the Court Precedent for why this is protected speech. You have a right to be there. And you have a right to your speech. Reporter law professor Margaret Russell has taught for 25 years at santa clara university. She explains the case named for what happened here in 1980. It actually started with a dispute in california at the Pruneyard Shopping Center with High School Students who wanted to gather signatures for a petition. Reporter and today across the street from the pruneyard Hamilton Plaza is another hot spot for solicitors from the homeless to green peace and, yes, bob from gift a vet, who moved here after our story aired. So much speech takes place at Shopping Centers today. Reporter russell explains california is one of a handful of states with very strong free speech protection, even on private property if its a shared space where the public can gather. And even if whats being said is untrue. People have a right to lie. There are other ways of controlling that kind of misbehavior, but people have the right to lie. Reporter so whats the fix . You combat wrong speech or hurtful speech with more speech. The stores have the right to put up signs to say we have nothing to do with these people. And in fact we think theyre frauds. Reporter sus sell says the authorities are more likely to pursue and win cases based not on what someone says but on what they do. Interfering with people, harassing people, going up to people and having some unwanted solicitation. Reporter we tried to ask gift a vet cofounder about why they moved and if they could put us in touch with any of the veterans they say theyve helped.
