San francisco and oakland combined. Scott boxes we have several reports for you this morning. Stephanie chuang is with evacuees. Kari hall is looking at the weather conditions. But lets begin with nbc bay areas bob redell who spent the morning with fire crews. Bob live a calfire spokesman indicated today could one bright spot is that that inversion, the cloud layer, hovering over the valley fire over the past two day has lifted. You can see blue sky through the smoky haze there. Which means the choppers and air tankers can start their attack today, much, much earlier than usual. These three here can start walking and checking homes. Reporter this was the scene 90 minutes ago this morning along bus canyon road. Unit leaders trying to figure out where on the fire lines men and women are needed most. Over the past 24 hours cal fire almost doubled the number of firefighters. There are around 2800 men and women assigned to put out the valley fire that has destroyed nearly 600 homes. The fire, as you mentioned, still only 15 percent contained but its rate of growth has slowed significantly. On saturday alone, fire burned 40,000 acres. Several thousand on sunday, and only a few more yesterday. Weve learned we dont want to let our guard down. Watched what happened at the rocky fire and some other fires weve had recently in the area in the last month or so, is that weve had unexpected explosive growth. Yes, things are looking good but we dont want to let our guard down. Reporter cal fire is forecasting some wind tonight, which is not good. But along with kari hall they are expecting rain tomorrow which would be good, as far as people who live in towns like middletown, where were at now, this is one of the hardest hit places. A lot of people wondering when can they come back to see whats left of their homes. The Fire Department is well aware of this. They understand frustration but want to make sure power lines are back up and trees are cleared and its also going to of course depend on the condition. Reporting live in middletown be bob redell. We are learning more about the biggest tragedy of the fire, the woman killed in her home because she could not get out. 72yearold Barbara Mcwilliams had multiple sclerosis and no way to evacuate. She moved to middletown less than a year ago, fell in love with the community. Her caregiver says she did not know how bad the fire was until it was too late. It makes me feel so horrible that she had to go like that. No one should have to go like that. Im sorry, im so, so, sorry she didnt make it. And i just i wish she can know how hard i tried. She made ever effort trying to get back to middletown. Roads were closed. She called but could not get through. What a tragedy for both families there. Thousands of people are reeling from the devastating fire and as it continues to grow, many people dont know if theyll have a home to go back to. Stephanie chuang live with more on how those evacuees are doing. Reporter scott and chris, people are staying pretty strong with smiles despite not knowing whether houses are still standing. American red cross estimating about a thousand heem here alone at fair grounds but theyre resilient and in good spirits because theyre sounded by generosity. Lots of food, clothes, boxes of them. But so many things the American Red Cross is turning away donations and thats upsetting people who are bringing donations through the bax entrance. Its the smell of bacon and potatoes on the grill first thing in the morning. Welcome. Reporter that put the smile on the faces of these valley fire evacuees, people stuck in him bolimbo, unable to go home, unsure if theres a home. Reporter but the pain is shared. And it seems to be bringing out the best in everyone, like this 10yearold whouz uncle lost his house in the fire. If we can feed them, make them happy with a little food, that works. Reporter Something Else heating up at camp. A little bit of tension, as the American Red Cross says its overwhelmed with donations and is turning people away. The best is to give cash, to help the fire victims for the long haul, with case work assistance and food and meal deliveries. We break it down into individual units and people who have homes burned will get more cash grants. Reporter its still upsetting for some who decided to take donations through the back. This trucks full of tents, blankets, clothes and supplies. In spite of what the red cross is saying, he will continue to collect and deliver donations to the victims. I cant see anybody that seems to not need more things. Theyve lost everything they have. Reporter i just spoke with a woman who is upset, theres so many things here in cin calisto she wants to take to places to where her brother is evacuated. Also want to mention the Athletic Boosters Club has been feeding people breakfast, lunch, dinner. Its been going very well but probably will need food donations soon.
