Agents with the fbi are loading, leading this investigation. Theyre here with agents from the riaa that is the Recording Industry association of america. They have been packing and taping empty boxes, supposedly with that pirated music. Neighbors tell me thats what they have been doing inside the home for more than two years, pirating cds and perhaps dvds. Fbi spokeswoman in San Francisco has not gotten back to us on what theyre looking for or what they have found. We have not heard back from her. Neighbors, though, have been looking on. Theyre cleaning it out, which is good. Get the people out of there, you know. Put them where theyre supposed to be, make the street better. The pirated cds sell on the street for roughly 5 to 10 each. That shouldnt cost the suspects much more to produce that at this point. Neighbors say they have known that something is going on inside of the home for quite a while. They were surprised to see fbi agents and agents with the recording Agency Agents raiding the home. Then again, they werent surprised because they have seen what is happening here so theyre waiting for the agents to open the gates of the garage here at this home and get rid of the evidence that they have supposedly boxes and boxes full of pirated cds and perhaps dvds. Theyre shifting officers out of specialized units and out onto the street. The move to squeeze more patrols out of the same level of staffing begins on sunday. The departments metro unit which responds to the citys most serious crimes will take the biggest hit. Theyre losing several officers and a sergeant. The Department Says getting more officers out on patrol helps sjpd answer 911 calls. Were trying to keep the levels on patrol at a level that we can maintain. Again, were using overtime cars and regular assigned patrol officers. But we need to have a minimum level, and its becoming increasingly difficult, so were not going to back fill some of those positions in the special operations, the bureau of investigation, and the bureau of administration. The department is also working to implement a mandatory overtime plan. By the end of the month, a quiet north bay neighborhood may know of a convicted sex offender will move into their community. Two restaurant workers at la toque and three other people who contracted hepatitis a have completed their initial questionnaire, which ruled out foreign travel as the source of the desweez. The Health Department has all but ruled out all five ate at the same restaurant at some point. Now the focus turns to contaminated food they came into contact with the kind bought and sold perhaps at a Grocery Store. Now we start looking at what are Food Products that both groups could have come into contact with. And usually, that end up being a commercial food product, something processed, grown, whatever, in another place where there is hepatitis a more frequently. Napa county Public Health officers will soon have the five patients fill out these exhaustive ninepage questionnaires. Then we get into food and water exposures. To find out what and where they ate at the time of infection, which for one of the patients goes back to january. No one really remembers exactly what they ate in january. But what we can say is do you frequently eat smoothies . Do you frequently eat raw this that or the other thing . Its very detailed. We say thank you to the patients for being so patient because it is not a particularly fun thing to go through. The Health Department is also connected with the state and c cdvs Surveillance Network to see if other cases pop up nationwide. If there were to be similarities this could point to a commercially available food product as the source. It wouldnt be a cooked product, as the hep a process wouldnt survive, but could be frozen fruits and vegetables as its resilient to the cold. Were looking really closely at where do those people eat, what did they eat . Hep a is a contagious Liver Disease that can only be transmitted from feces, by people who dont do a good job of washing their hands after using the restroom. Theyre fairly confident that people who ate at la toque between february 9th and the 26th dont have that much to worry about because the restaurant has high standards in the kitchen and for its workers when it comes to sanitation. Still, they issued the warning just in case. The hotel weston vurosa which houses la toque issued a statement, our Guests Health and safety is most important and we took all appropriate precautions when we learned of the diagnosis. There have been no known cases involving hotel guests or customers at the two establishments. As for the five people who concontracted hep a, they have made a full recovery and are doing well. He dashed there from his car at a gas station across the street running for his life to seek help. Prosecutors say he had been carjacked at gunpoint by Tamerlan Tsarnaev after the tsarnaev brothers were on the m. I. T. Campus where they murdered a police officer. The fbi says they used his atm to get cash then stopped to get gas and load up on snacks. Thats when meng made a run for it. Pharmacy benefits manager express scripts says the increases are setting records. Express scripts negotiated drug prices on behalf of insurers. It says the gains were driven by a 31 increase in the cost of socalled specialty drugs like those for rheumatoid arthritis, cancer multiple sclerosis, and hepatitis c. Its not sustainable pricing. So we have to do something to both bring the products to the marketplace but also make it affordable for patients. The drug price war came to a head last year over a revolutionary new pill for hepatitis c. It costs upwards of 80,000 for 12 weeks of treatment, drawing resistance from insurers and Patient Advocacy groups. When it was approved in december express scripts struck an exclusive deal and then gilead reached a similar deal with cvs, forcing it to make a 40 discount on the pills this year. Express script says its not finished. Next up, maybe a new class of drugs for cholesterol, expected to be approved later this year. Cvs has estimated they could cost the Health Care System as much as 150 billion a year. A number the drug industry says is unrealistic. I can tell you its not going to be 150 billion a year and thats a little bit of i would say, gamesmanship because theyre trying to obviously come and get the discussion going with a little bit of fear to the system that its going to overwhelm the system. Its just not true. Were going to come out with a fair price. They both say theyre in discussions about price before the drugs known as pcsk9 inhinters reach the market which could lead to lower prices at the outset. No rain obthat parade but by sunday for the second day of the festival, we are expecting some light shower activity. Nbc bay area a proud sponsor of that parade every year. So lets talk about green on the radar. Expecting that as we head throughout 11 00 a. M. Sunday. Showers will continue to press to the south as we head throughout the second half of the day. So if youre watching us from the north bay, best to make the outdoor plans for the second half of the day. If youre watching us south of the Golden Gate Bridge you want to go ahead and put those plans off until the afternoon hours. This is what were working with getting into the remainder of the week. Next week looking good monday into tuesday. 70s on the way. A little cloud cover, jet stream stays just to our north. For us thats going to translate to more clouds cooler conditions, and about a 10 chance for showers monday into tuesday. Better chance on wednesday. Another storm system to watch. Well the way city budgets are stretched these days sometimes its challenging just to keep the streets clean. One oakland neighborhood doesnt seem to have that problem thanks to the incredible dedication of just one man. Heres Garvin Thomas with the latest installment of bay area proud. With the exception of a stint in the navy Michael Lydon has spend his entire life living a stones throw from Piedmont Avenue. He has seen many changes to the street over the decades, although one change he can take particular pride in. If you take the time to stop and listen youll notice early mornings in the city have a different sound than the rest of the day. Its true along oaklands Piedmont Avenue though here there is one noise that is distinct from almost anywhere else. That would be the sound of dedication created by Michael Lydons broom and dustpan. Every tuesday and thursday morning, you will find michael walking up and down Piedmont Avenue, removing every little thing that doesnt belong on Piedmont Avenue. Heres an interesting thing here. All these cigarette butts. A guy up there throws them out the window. Geez. Its certainly a nice thing for a 70yearold retired man to do for his neighborhood. It is a remarkable mission when you learn just how long hes been doing it. Since 1979. That would be 36 years. Thats okay. Dont pass out. I know im a young looking man. Morning. Michael says the sweeping started when he began helping his retired father maintain the grounds of a nearby church. Michael noticing only then just how littered the streets were. So i would on the way back after helping him, i would clean the stuff up. And thats really it kind of started that way, and you know time moves on. And im still sweeping. Early on it didnt take long for the local Merchants Association to notice just how clean michaels part of the avenue looked. So they asked him to start a program paying people to sweep five days a week. Michael did. Keeping a couple days for himself, though but not taking a cent for the work. Im just doing what im doing here. If there is a lesson in this for all of us though it might just be that sometimes the simplest of tasks can make you the biggest of neighborhood heroes.
