Bob redell is live with new reaction from city leaders and tech science. We know google wants to grow. Mountain view likes having them there. How does it Work Together right . Yes, good morning, kris. Google transformed the city of Mountain View years ago when it built its sprawling campus headquarters and it wands to do it again. In the last hour and a half googles Real Estate Team dropped off its proposal to the city of Mountain Views Planning Department to begin review and approval. The tech jiebt released these artistic renders which show a futuristic vision for the north bay area which is where were at right now near the headquarters. There will be several new structures, some to be built on vacant land. Others on the site of their current buildings that would have to come down. As you look at the images what is striking are the bubble objects. Those are glass canopies very large, some the size of a city block, that will encompass some of the 2. 5 million square feet of office space google wands to add. That would be 10 million square feet of office space when all is said and done. That will allow them to add 10,000 employees. Add to that the 20,000 that are existing, they would have a total of 30,000 in this area which has raised concerns about raised housing prices and increased traffic. The way we trust it is the fact that we have also an Outstanding Program of reducing single occupancy vehicles now, so well carry the program further and better. Talking about the buses . Buses, carpooling bikes. The whole grouping of transportation. Any development is going to impact the housing costs. The whole area the whole bay area is experiencing you can go to raywood city san jose everybody is experiencing it. Its part of the growth, and its going to evolve right now, if you were here ten years ago, things were quiet. No new apartments were built. Now were on the upside. Sometimes you like the upside to improve the quality of life for a lot of people. That right there, the mayor of Mountain View googles director of construction speaking just before him. Today was the deadline Mountain View set for companies wishing to increase their office space in the north bay district. The city tells us it wasnt just google submitting proposals but others like linked in as well. They must go through the approval process. Assuming google gets the goahead, it would still be year said before you see the glass bubble canopies in Mountain View. Reporting live in Mountain View bob redell. We live in the future. All right, bob, thanks. A suspected robber is dead, shot and killed by two Police Officers in San Francisco. They say he was armed with a large knife that he refused to put down. This happened late last night near the corner of fulsome and 25th streets in the mission district. Stephanie chuang has the details on the investigation. Good morning. You hear in times when you need to call 911 that every second counts, and San Francisco police say a lot of time was saved because two plain clothes officers happened to be in the area of 25th and fulsome when all of this happened. This took place just before 10 00 last night when investigators say dispatch was just putting a call out to police when the two officers not in uniform saw the robbery attempt, went up to the suspect with their guns out, demanded that he drop his knife. Now, they say officers will fire their weapons if they believe their lives or other peoples lives are in jeopardy and both officers did begin to shoot. Investigators found at least six bullet casings on the ground in the crime scene area. The suspect did not survive. Police chief says the robbery victim himself credits police with protecting him. The victim told the captain of mission station himself that he was coming after me with a knife this big. That is the knife was not that big, however it is large. And he thanked the captain saying you guys saved my life. Investigators say thankfully they did have a good number of wenlszs, eight or so who they have interviewed adding both plain clothes officers were wearing their department issued stars. The department is set to hold a town hall meeting. And in the past the police chief has brought things like weapons to show the crowd what was involved. In this case it might be the knife, a kitchen knife, at least six inches long. Also routine, both officers have been placed on paid administrative lead as multiple investigations take place conducted by the homicide detail internal affairs and the San Francisco district attorneys office. Thank you, steph. A case of criminal deja vu in San Francisco, as well. Police investigatings another smash and grab burglary. The latest victim is a highend audio retailer. Spock into our living rooms has passed a away. Leonard nimoy doyed eddied of pullman air disease. Born in boston in 1931 Leonard Nimoy was acting in a neighborhood theater by age 8. I continued to do that until i was a teenager and eventually came to california. Once in california, he started acting with roles in b films like them and guest spots on tv shows, to include the virginians and the man from uncle where he would meet fellow star trek cast members William Shatner and deforest kelly. I thought i would find my work in playing various kinds of people, and enjoyed doing that and along came spock. 1965 when Leonard Nimoy was cast in the role of mr. Spock in a pilot called star trek. Which initially failed. But when a new pilot and show was rewritten and recast only nimoy as spock remained as a cast member. The new star trek would run for just three years. Nimoy became so remembered for this role and little else that he went on to write an autobiography called i am not spock a reference to the fact he didnt like being type cast and taken less seriously as an actor. Logical. Lawlessly logical. However, he would go on playing spock in five more original star trek movies two tefrbl spinoffs and a relaunch of the film franchise in 2009 as an older, wiser spock mentoring his younger self. There are so few vulcans left. Yet after more than 250 roles and a career that spanned more than six decades, it will be the logical pointy eared alien spock for which Leonard Nimoy will be most remembered. Live long and prosper. The first regular season match is in two weeks. They better get to playing soon because the rain is rolling in. Luckily, it hasnt hit the south bay just yet. The forecast i think, as it gets twarbdz the weekend, the weather will be changing every five minutes. Breezy conditions and a passing shower. Kind of like we had earlier in San Francisco and the peninsula. Right now, low 60s right now. San jose seeing plenty of clouds to the east. 61 degrees with a few sprinkles like mt. Hamilton. You see the winds. And over the Golden Gate Bridge right now rainbow free for the moment. Currently 60 though well see a few more showers dropping in through the afternoon, along with the winds which continue to pick up. Wind speeds about 15 to 20 Miles Per Hour right now. These will begin to gust maybe closer to 30 Miles Per Hour as we head into the afternoon for the hills of the east bay and around the peninsula. One of the reasons why todays temperatures will be cooler than yesterday. For today, most of the shower opportunities will be east of san jose. Like were seeing right now, around the peninsula, the foothills around the Santa Cruz Mountains and tomorrow as more of the cooler air spills in thats going to bring us the better chance, we think, for seeing more widespread showers and possibly some thunder in the mix as well. For now, well be looking at 50s and low 60s as we go through the day. A slight chance for seeing showers with highs and only the warmest locations in the mid 60s. Closer to palo alto and san jose low 60s. San francisco, low 60s, breezy at times, for the north bay, highs in the low 60s. In the trivalley, highs also in the low 60s for today, and then turning cooler tomorrow, which could set the stage for maybe some thunder. First, the colder air starts to come in in the center of the low more directly over the bay area for saturday more widespread showers, temperatures cold enough for snow near 4,000 feet. So maybe mt. Hamilton off to the east of san jose could get a dusting of snow and with the heavier showers, easy for the updrafts to go above 4,000 feet and drop hail with the heavier showers in addition to thunder. Notice the window from 5 30 to 7 30 on saturday and after sunset, as we get closer to 11 00 tomorrow night, well lose the convective punch to the showers so the showers should we shutting down into saturday night. Rainfall totals dont look all that great. If you find yourself near the heavier showers, the likelihood in the south bay and mountains, decent rain totals but not much else elsewhere. Highly variable due to the popup nature of the showerser. More widespread will be the snow in the sierra where we could close in on a foot of snow in the 8,000 feet level and snow levels as low as 3500 feet. Plan ahead for winter like driving over the weekend. The story, a chance of sunshine showers, brief thunder possible for saturday afternoon. Sunday, a brief break, and a few more showers monday a weaker system, and then the temperatures start to rebound and warm as we head toward the middle of next week. All right, rob, thank you. Well during the Great Depression the federal government put millions of americans back to work building dams bridges monuments. Quite a few were put to work making art as well. Those treasures would likely have been lost if not for the efforts of the people in our next story. Garvin thomas is here with bay area proud. When you hear someone called a history detective, they usually arent a real detective, but Michael Ramos is. Hes a special agent with the United States General Services administration. He normally catches bad guys who waste taxpayer money or steal government property. The case hes been on the last few years doesnt quite fit that mold. What it is is our bay area proud. The target of his investigation, special agent mike ramos was told could be found at the grand Avenue Branch of the south San Francisco public library. The fact the objects of his search were just hanging around, hiding in plain sight, didnt make their discovery any less sweet for mike. So when i first walked in here, i saw that. Yeah, i got the goosebumps. These two paintings by a late artist was just the beginning of what mike found. In back rooms, basement and behind boxes, a dozen other works of art all with one thing in common. At the height of the Great Depression the Work Progress Administration or wpa, put millions of unemployed americans back to work. That included artists. Hundreds of thousands of pieces were commissioned and placed in public spaces like libraries all over the country. The government then promptly lost track of most of them. Sometimes records were nonexistent. Facilities close administrations change, and they lost track of the art work. A few years ago, they decided to track down the lost works of art. They reached out to mike and mike started reaching out to others. With a few bumps along the way. I have to say when i first got the email i looked at mikes job title and i thought, what have i done . But shannon was the San Mateo County library was soon onboard, happily showing mike more than 50 works of wpa art they had stored in their attic. A lot of people are very passioned about wpa. Once youre able to make the connection to them you essentially have another investigator on your side. Mike says all this has been time well spent. The more than 150 pieces of taxpayer property his office has tracked down are valued at close to 3 million. Not to mention the value of making sure once lost pieces of American History dont stay that way. Theres a lot of work to be done. We look forward to continuing the journey. And a long journey its going to be. Mike says of the estimated 200,000 works of art created by the wpa, they have only been able to identify about 20 to 30,000 of them. And to be clear, mike says the government doesnt take the pieces away. They just catalog them and make sure they know where they are. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Well if you know someone doing something nice for others garvin would like to hear from you. Go to our website, nbcbayarea. Com, search bay area proud. Were expecting something nice in the forecast. Finally rain maybe not as much as we wanted but rob says enough. The storm is cold enough to give us good snow up towards the sierra. Thats a pleasant change from the relatively warmer systems, few and far between we have seen this winter. Outside, sunshine mix of clouds. A lot of saturday is going to look like this. The weekend is not going to be a washout. But from time to time youll find a few showers. Cool and breezy conditions. Well show you here out towards point reyes, our Weather Underground camera looking to the coast. You can see the waves there approaching the coast, being fanned by pretty gusty winds there. At times up to 25 Miles Per Hour. Around the rest of the bay area, 10 to 20mileperhour winds that will accelerate the gusts probably closer to 30 Miles Per Hour as we head towards the afternoon and evening. Were still seeing a few showers here impacting perhaps your highway 17 commute as you get to santa cruz. You can see off to the west saratoga, and to the south, lose gat gattose, a few light showers, but this is the drier of the two days as the system is going to bring us a chance of widespread showers is still working its way down the coast. For the rest of the day, partly cloudy skies, best chance of showers in the hilltops or bay in mt. Hamilton and then tomorrow well see more unstable air starting to come into the bay area, which should trigger more intense showers for the afternoon. Highs today, low to mid 60s from the Santa Clara Valley to the pins peninsula, about the same. It might not feel as warm with the breezy conditions. Low 60s around the north bay and trivalley today, and then the main event with cooler air starts to spill in as we go on to saturday. So as the cold air starts to sweep into the bay area add daytime heating and moisture below it and the air starts to rise up and the cooler air aloft could trigger more scattered showers increasing in the afternoon, and possibly thunder. With the snow level close to 4,000 feet some of the stronger convective showers probably contain hail. Even to 7club 30 tomorrow might, youre still seeing showers. And then 11 00, the showers finally begin to shut down. So the rain total estimate highly variable. The most likely area to see the highest totals though should be around the Santa Cruz Mountains a the low swings down the coast, a lot of moisture directed to the south of the bay area. Highly variable totals due to the convective nature of the showers. Kind of the swiss cheese effect. Some places seeing quite a bit of rain. Others could miss out. Heres the good news, you head to the sierra youre in the rain just below 2,000 feet. As you head there, you get back into the snow. As you go up to dawner pass again, that is where the snow has been flying. It will be as low as 3500 feet with the system that should bring close to a foot of snow to the locations south of highway 50, and snow levels dropping by saturday night as low as 3500 feet. So the forecast here as we go through the weekend, like were seeing today, a mix of partly cloudy skies, breezy conditions but watch saturday afternoon as we get the heating of the day and the cooler air aloft, could trigger a shower. Sunday a break. Temperatures climb and one more system for monday. Then after that and fortunately, High Pressure will be building in and the temperatures should be climbing for the second half of next week. Back to you. Well be right back.
