Building, the four walls, theres Nothing Holding up the four walls alt the warehouse now. Crews couldnt even go inside to fight the fire because the building could have collapsed at any moment. A threealarm fire broke out at this abandoned warehouse around 3 45 this morning. The blaze was so big and ferocious, the roof collapsed forcing crews in a defensive stance. It took more than an hour to knock it out. This was a defensive operation where we stand around the outside. It was not safe in there. The aftermath of the fire brought tiffany to tears. She had been squatting in there and was visiting a friend across the street when the fire broke out. With the building dw stroyed, so, too, are her things. Theres a lot of things destroyed. Investigators are looking into whether Homeless People started the fire. Witnesses say they saw people running out of the building when the fire broke out. Sometimes squatters will build a camp fire to keep warm. Its fenced off and locked up. We did notice one of the fences had been forced and one of the doors had been opened. And then the fire did appear to start in the interior. So with an abandoned warehouse, thats one of the things were concerned about, people are squatting or sleeping in there and potentially start a fire. So our concern is, we hope everybody got out safely. With the Structural Integrity of the building in question we may never know if someone died in the fire because no one is allowed inside. The fire damaged, if you cant see it from here it damaged the major structural components that hold the roof together which in turn hold the walls together. Were not going to send any crews in there and we dont want anyone in therory near this building. Coincidentally a locer builder who owns the building was going to have it demolished next tuesday. Now hes looking to have it leveled as soon as possible now that its destroyed and is a hazard. Dramatic flames as we were driving up on 87 this morning. Sparks over the highway. Its luckily no one was hurt. Firefighters are watching their step after one of them fell into a boobytrap in the field. The firefighter fell while responding to a grass fire on the east side of Communications Hill on sunday. The hole was about two feet deep filled with sharpened sticks, and lightly covered with burlap. A fire captain says he doesnt think it was intended to ensnare firefighters but perhaps was a means of protection at what was once a homeless encampment. Our guess is it was there for some time maybe as a means of defense from one encampment to another. How the firefighter who fell through the trap is okay but its unclear who set the trap and why they did it. This morning, Richmond Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed a deadly shooting to come forward. They were patrolling the Crescent Park apartments, and heard gun shots before 7 30 last night and found three men who had been shot. One man died at the scene, the other two were rushed to the hospital and are expected to survive. So far, no suspects. In oakland, investigators are trying to figure out how two people ended up dead, their bodies ending up under an overpass. They were found next to 580 a couple blocks from lake merritt. Theres no visible sign of trauma. A deadly train emergency in washington, d. C. Has caught the attention of b. A. R. T. Officials here in the bay area. Earlier this week a metro train in the Nations Capital filled with smoke. One woman died and dozens of other people were taken to the hospital. The ntsb said electrical arcing caused the emergency. Its a lot like the b. A. R. T. System, and b. A. R. T. Has had their own close calls on the third rail. In september of 2012 an arc filled the civic station with smoke. What has b. A. R. T. Leaders concerned in the wake of the accident is many passengers got tired of waiting and evacuated on their own, which is a move b. A. R. T. Says puts everyone in danger. We always want to avoid people opening that emergency latch to open the doors. The problem with that is the train operator may be very close to moving that train out of the area and if you open the emergency latch door its going to cause that train to not move. B. A. R. T. Says in an emergency, you should talk to your train operator. There is an intercom on every car. But passengers we spoke with said b. A. R. T. Operators need to be more vocal and clear during an emergency. Well, if you do take b. A. R. T. Consider this an early warning. Protesters could make you late for work friday morning. Organizers of the protest are calling the event b. A. R. T. Friday, no business as usual. They plan to meet on the underground platform of the montgomery station at 7 00 friday morning. They want prosecutors to drop charges against more than a dozen people who were arrested at b. A. R. T. Stations in demonstrations in response to a great jurys demonstration to not indict an officer in the shooting death of Michael Brown in ferguson, missouri. A project that would bring millions of gallons of toxic waste will not happen. They voted against the project. The project would have carried crude oil from Santa Barbara county through morgan hill and san jose. A mile long train can carry more than 2 million gallons each. Some see it as a disaster waiting to happen. Our concerns are what would happen if a derailment occurred and in particular the load that the trains are carrying. Right through our city within 100 feet of homes in my Council District going through farmland as well coming through downtown. Philips 66 says it has decades of experience transporting cargo safely and always takes precautions, but again, not going to happen. A controversial new plan approved to monitor drivers. Police will be equipped with two automatic license plate readers. A number of bay area cities run these. Many have run into controversy. This week, Council Members agreed to a trail plan for the next six weeks. They collect and store license plate data. One reader will be placed near the busy 101 on ramp and the other will be mounted to a futroll vehicle. Critics call it an excessive surveillance tactic. The drought is creating a stink in Mountain View which the city is working to clear out. Starting this morning, the city began flushing out its water main pipes because people said their tap water smelled like rotten egg. The city normally flushes the water mains every year but last year it didnt happen because the city was trying to cut back on water use. Mountain view hopes to be Mountain Fresh by the end of the week. Nasa engineers say it may have been a false alarm, but theyre locking down the crew on the International Space station as they investigate a possible ammonia leak. U. S. Astronauts scrambled as an alarm sounded just after 4 00 on the International Space station. They got into the segment, they closed the hatch, we checked the environment. And since that time we have been sorting through this anomaly. The initial concern for the flight team was the potential for anemone yeah leak on the station, though theyre quick to point out thats the worst case scenario. We need to emphasize there is no hard data to suggest there was in fact a real ammonia leak. It may have been triggered by a water pressure spike, a faulty sensor, or computer relay box. Were now in the position where we think everything is good. But now we have this big road in front of us to get back reconfigured. The astronauts work has been put on hold as nasa engineers search for answers. Stand by and thank you for that. We wish you had more for you to do at this point. We dont, so enjoy your day off. For now, the crew will remain in the russian segment of the space station where there are enough provisions to sustain all of the astronauts for at least a week if necessary. Jay gray nbc news. New at 11 00, an emotional reunion in the bay area, about an hour ago, a bay area boy who survived a terrible fall at bodega bay met the First Responders who saved his life. Stephanie strong is live in oakland. The reunion was two months in the making. Absolutely. Good morning to you both. What a reunion it was here at the childrens hospital. The day to day fire captain has a 4yearold son of his own, so he was wiping away tears as he met the little boy whose life he helped to save. The kind of rescue they live for and we as journalists live to cover. Take a look at when sebastian johnson, 4 years old, legs wobbly shaky, with the help of his mom and grandmother heading towards these waiting bodada bag firefighters who helped save his life back in november. There were a lot of hugs. There were even gifts. He was in good spirits, chatting with reporters, playing with the microphones, doing remarkably well considering he survived the equivalent of a 23story fall just two months ago. He suffered broken bones, head trauma. Doctors had to wire his jaw shut, and it was in november when the family was there at the top of bodega head in the state park. Sebastian had been throwing rocks near a trail when he fell. To meet the men who witnessed the heart warming moment priceless for both the heroes who saved him and the boy who is here now. Thank you for saving my life. Youre welcome, buddy. Youre welcome, buddy. Glad we were there for you. I have a 4yearold at home. He has a 4yearold at home. And you know going down im thinking about my kid and, you know, what kind of you know situation this could be if i was the parent. But you kind of get into the mindset of doing your job and getting into using your skills that doesnt sink in until afterwards. Im grateful to be able to meet him, because we dont usually do, like you said we drop the patient off at the hospital and thats the last we see them. We hear about it through word of mouth. Theyre the ones who gave me my sons life. Gave me back my life. I dont know what i would do without my little boy. Now, the effort to save sebastian described as a Daring Rescue with firefighters rappelling down the clift to get to the 4yearold boy, wrapping hip up dropping him on to a backboard on a basket. This is the highest section of that cliff, and very challenging as far as rescues are concerned because it has limestone and sandstone that can quickly crumble. The good news is that they were able to help save the boy. As you saw, he was doing very well. Sebastians mom said shes been basically living here at the hospital, but that hes been doing phenomenally well and they may be able to go home soon. She had one last piece of advice for everyone, but mareparents to hug and hold your kids tighter tonight because they may be gone in a split second. Stephanie strong abc bay area news. We should give that advice every day. Happening right now, the yosemite climbers on el capitan are a few feet from history. Santa rosas Kevin Jorgeson and Tommy Caldwell are about one hour from heeching the summit of the wall. Their friends are already there waiting for their arrival. For the last 18 days they have been navigating the slippery Vertical Rock face with nothing but their hands and their feet. The climbers captured the attention of people around the world. How impressive is this historic attempt . The wall theyre climbing is 3,000 feet tall. Thats about three times the height of San Franciscos Transamerica Pyramid and four and a half times the height of the washington monument. So experts say the vast majority of climbers never have attempted a route this hard even 100 feet off the ground. Nobody has tried it for the full 3,000 untile these fellows. Ill glad we put up the graphic because you dont think about the scale. And with no tools whatsoever except the safety rope. I dont think i could do it. Christina loren, at least they had good weather for their climb, wouldnt you say . You have to have great faith to do Something Like that. I will tell you that and im losing faith in our rain chances, but ill sholl you what were expecting. Lets start with whats happening this morning. What youll notice about the time lapse is that the high clouds are increasing. Were starting to see a reversal of our wind pattern, which is good news thats going to keep the air quality in good shape. Look at the temperatures right now. What a great day to get out to the beach if you can. 61 degrees in half moon bay. 64 in san carlos and 62 in san jose. A couple things happening on the wind map and what youll notice is we still have the offshore flow. We have had that marine influence negated for the past couple days. Part of the reason why the air quality has been so poor but things are going to change. An area of low pressure is slowly put surely chugging toward the bay area coastline, and this one might squeeze out a few showers. What i think is more likely is well continue to see the winds out of the west and for us that means in thes will stay nice and clean. But its a pretty good looking system. We have a better chance for rain as we meet back here next week. Boy, we need it. January is typically the wettest month in the bay area. Temps will end up in the mid 60s for today. 62 on the peninsula, and right around 61 in San Francisco. You can start to see that haze starting to come back. She was later seen with a female suspect on surveillance video. David baker said he didnt care about his stolen stuff. He just wanted the dog back. Right when i saw her, i broke into tears and hugged her. It was a feeling i can never really explain. It was the most stress i ever had to feel in my life. And i wasnt able to eat or sleep for three days. Spread the message on twitter, on instagram, and police say someone called 911 to report having seen the dog. Jury selection began three days ago. Three days rather, before the Charlie Hebdo massacre. This morning, the judge acted quickly to deny the request to delay the trial. Were learning more this morning about a bizarre death threat against one of the most powerful politicians in the country. A former bartender has been indicted on suspicion of threatening to kill House Speaker john boehner. The suspect used to work at a country club near cincinnati where boehner is a member. He had planned to poison or shoot the lawmaker. Court documents obtained by nbc news showed the man thought boehner was to blame for the ebola outbreak. They say shes disturbed and under psychiatric evaluation. President obama heads to americas heartland. His push is part of an agenda hell lay out more extensively in the state of the union address, but that agenda is under attack. Theyre focused on other issues including immigration. The house today will debate a series of amendments to block president obamas immigration orders as part of a Homeland Security funding bill. Its not about actually the issue of immigration. What it is its about the president acting lawlessly. This is frivolous. They know this will not become the law. Republican lawmakers also focused on approving the keystone pipeline. Even if approved the white house said president obama will veto that pipeline bill. Also today, the white house will announce a new plan to cut methane emissions nearly in half, but critics say its an empty threat. The plan will call for methane emissions released through oil and Gas Production to be slashed by 45 by 2025 in hopes of fighting global warming, but critics tell the l. A. The iowa caucus still a year away but the race for the white house seemingly heating up. There are reports that Chris Christie is indeed preparing to set up a Political Action committee. Peter alexander shows us who else could run. That sure escalated quickly. Almost overnight, the republican field appears to be filling up. Were a nation beset by anxiety. During his state of the state address, Chris Christie seemed to be targeting a wider audience than just new jersey. We need a new jersey renuvl and an american newrenewal. A protester who heckled christie at an event last fall. But this time no confrontation. The 2016 field is shaping up to be both crowded and unpredictable with mitt romney apparently back on board after two losing campaigns. An adviser tells nbc, i would be surprised if he didnt run. And romney is set to speak at a Republican NationalCommittee Meeting in san diego this week. A romney reboot could put him on a crash course with jeb bush. It would be a messy race more about whose turn is it romney or bush rather than who is more conservative . Does romney deserve another chance . Its a very open process. May the best person win. But kentucky senator rand paul said the party needs to move beyond romney. I think hes had his chance and its time for fresh blood. Likely joining the fray, Scott Walker Ted Cruz and former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee wooing conservatives with his new book god, guns grits, and gravy. Skewering the first familys parenting skills for allowing them to listen to beyonce and accusing jayz from crossing the line to husband to pimp when it comes to his wife. That was Peter Alexander reporting. No comments from the white house, jayz or beyonce about huckabees comments. Now to what some say is an unexpected consequence of the core standards increasingly taking hold across the nation and in our state as well. Its the end of recess. Heres kerry sanders. Kids often joke its their favorite time of the school day. Recess. But in orlando, recess is no joke. Now, when the school bell rings, at 23 elementary schools, its off to another class because principals have done away with recess. They have become machines that produce data as opposed to children. Standardized tests known as common core exams often determine a teachers pay. Sometimes even their job. So instead of 20 minutes or the playground teachers are using the extra time to teach to the test. Because so much of the money is tied to the schools scores and their grades everybodys pressured. There are usually two sides to every story. Not so with recess. In orlando, at a standing room only School Board Meeting tuesday, parents protested the cut. And nationwide more and more school drikts are eliminating or considering cutting recess. Many experts believe recess actually enhances learning and losing the unstructured play time robs kids of the ability to learn important social skills. At the end of the day, who cares if you have straight as and you get a scholarship to harvard if youre socially inept. School administrators say theyre sympathetic but the clock is their enemy. We will come to a place in florida and probably nationally where we have to admit that we really dont have enough minutes in the day to get everything done that we would like to see accomplished for our children. That is a difficult conversation but we both have two kids and theyre wiggly when they dont get the wiggles out. You have to have recess. Still to come changing the way we eat. Gr this will hopefully come to a change in how people are grazing. How a drought is making changes at a local farm. It made me realize i felt good when i help people. He said a goat changed his life. The new direction the teenager with autism was inspired to take will make you bay area proud. Looking forward to that also looking forward to hitting the beach after the newscast because its clear as a bell andee have big changes on the way. Pattern change with the inclusion of some rain. Well get into that in the full forecast just moments away. Welcome back. I do have a quick update. Walnut creek police say their officers are searching for a man in the yara of Buena Vista Elementary School. That school has been locked down. Also contra Costa Christian School according to the Walnut Creek Police has been locked down. We have crews on the way and well let you know what we know when we know it. Contra Costa Christian School and Buena Vista Elementary School are in lockdown as they look for a suspect in the area. Right, details later. Also right now, water and grass are key concerns for any cattle rancher, but especially during a drought. Joe rozotto shows us one of the ranchers putting the worries out to pasture as part of a rather creative study. The ambleing hills of the san mateo coast. Dotted with sloping grasslands and tucked away farms. Near the tiny town of pescudara is tomkat ranch. Were an 1800 acre working cattle ranch and learning laboratory about sustainable agriculture. Its a ranch where the practices of farming are constantly tweaked. Mission of the ranch is to raise healthy food on working land in a way that inspires others. As a results, the ranchs cattle have gotten more attention than most cattle do. We move them on a grazing schedule so they move around to different pastures. The cows and their daily diming are the center of a experiment on how it affects grassland. Most people put cattle out and leave them out and dont spend a lot of Energy Moving them around. Here the cattle are moved daily to different pastures. We try to move them regularly so were giving each plant time to rest. So it can grow bigger and stronger. Since the beginning of the threeyear study, ecologists have noticed more growth in the grasses. We have found grass increase by 72 over the three years. Thats significant because perennial grasses are hardier and can feet cattle throughout the year and ecologists say they survive better in a drought. Throughout much of last year perennial grasses were the only green grass we could find on the ranch. The experiment is intended to mimic the massive herds that one roamed the great plains constantly moving constantly eating. Its an art as much of a scientific to figure out when is the right time to move them. So far, seven farms along the coastline have begun similar experiments with the hope the practice will spread. Hopefully it will lead to a change in how people are grazing. For now, the cows are simply enjoying a movable feast, oblivious to the fact that it may change the world. Nbc bay area news. There is a nonprofit at the heart of this story. One that does great work with animals and kids with special needs. Particularly with one special connection they made possible. In all of Silicon Valley theres probably not another 17yearold out there who knows as much about goats as john coleman does. Hes a friendly guy. Around the stalls of the 4h barn at this ranch, john knows the story behind every coat. Romeos little brothers. But ask john his story and hell start with one goat in particular. That was froyo. He was the biggest and different from the others. John was about 10 years old when he first met froyo and understood a little bit himself about being different than others. Diagnosed on the autistic spectrum at age 3, john had his challenges growing up. Like i had trouble feeling my own body. So when i was uncomfortable, i would get angry and throw tantrum tantrums. Like, i would run around and threw chairs and all the kids are afraid because i was always a big kid. One day, that big kid met that big goat and things started to change. Absolutely. I think john is awesome. Vicky knows the story. You want to hold because shes the one who introduced to the two. Vickys family is behind animal assisted happiness, a nonprofit that introduces special Needs Children and adults to the gentlest collection of small farm animals you are ever likely to meet. Vicky says the greatest power the animals possess is not something they do but something they dont. Judge. These animals know what their job is and their job is just to be not to judge and make kids happy. In johns case he bonded so well with froyo, he began introducing him to other children with special needs, helping froyo do for them what he did for him. It made me realize i feel good when i help people. And it allowed me it made me want to commit to things. I was afraid to commit before. And i was a bit nervous about dedicating myself. John it would seem has no problem with dedication now. Proving the right friend at the right time can make all the difference. No matter who it is. Animal assisted happiness counts each interaction they make possible as a smile. And they say they have a lifetime goal of a million smiles. Including johns in just the past six years, they already have more than 14,000. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. A nice benchmark, what we should be measuring instead of profits, right . Exactly.
