Searchers are concentrating right now on an area ten miles from the planes last known location in the java sea. Nbcs katy tur has the very latest. Reporter a tough day here in southeast asia, officials confirm they found bodies and debris in the water. Those bodies and debris from that missing flight, airasia 8501. I apologize profusing for what they are going through. I am the leader of this company and i have to take responsibility. Reporter there were 162 people on this flight, 17 of them were kids, one was a baby. Passengers on my aircraft and i have to take responsibility for that. Reporter they are going to resume the search again tomorrow morning, theres a number of ships, planes, helicopters at their disposal. They are going to send divers down to an area where theres a large dark shadow, where they believe the bulk of the wreckage is. They are hoping the divers will be able to find the black boxes so they can be taken away, analyzed, so they can find out just went wrong with this airplane, what lessons they can learn. Meanwhile, family members have charted a plane for tomorrow taking them around the islands so they can pray at the last known location of this plane, a tough day here, but it will begin again tomorrow. They are still calling this a search and rescue operation, so there is still hope that there could be survivors. Back to you. And now to new details about a series of suspicious car fires in the south bay. They all broke out within about a half mile of each other near the san Jose Campbell border. Theres where nbc bay areas bob redell is live for us this morning. Youve seen new Surveillance Video of one of the fires. What does it tell you . Reporter good morning to you, kris. Two Fire Departments are looking into whether the three car fires last night were intentionally set. We can tell you that the one car fire here at the riverwalk apartment complex off south bascom avenue in san jose does appear suspicious based on what we observed watching video from two surveillance cameras located here on the property. The videos are grainy at times, but we were able to see the fire that appears to start inside one of the cars. We could see the outline of a person walking away from the car. A short time later we saw someone appear to casually observe the fire, didnt seem concerned, then the person walked off. Could not tell if it was the same person as before. This video did not record audio, but a man who lives here in the unit that was right up against the parking lot fire heard enough to make him suspicious. He tells us he heard a car alarm go off first, then saw the fire. This was around 2 20, 2 30 this morning. He said that heat was so great he couldnt touch the windows. His biggest concern was for his wife and son asleep on the other side of one of those windows. Really lucky, because it started spreading so fast and i can see the flames all over my glass, both the glasses. I was really, like, frightened it was going to explode or something. I was really scared. Reporter less than a block away in front of an ebay Office Location was the site of another car fire around 12 20 this morning, two hours before the one at the apartment complex. This is the picture from the Campbell Police department of a van that caught fire about a mile down in a parking structure behind a large office building. Weve marked all three locations on a map. You can see they are within roughly a mile of each other. That being said, Santa Clara County fire says the cause of the van fire is undetermined. They do not see anything right now that indicates it was suspicious. San jose fire is handing the other two fires and also keep in mind just a week ago, last monday night, going into tuesday morning, there were three other car fires that were set in this general location of the south bay, and those three car fires from last week, san jose fire has said were arson. Arson investigators from san jose are trying to figure out who set fire to an Elementary School late last night in san jose. Just before 10 30 last night, according to investigators, the fire was next to a school building. Took crews about an hour and a half just to extinguish it. Its unclear at this time if the school sustained any damage, but we do know the Fire Department considers the fire, quote, suspicious and an arson team is investigating. Well, police in berkley are looking for the gunman involved in a deadly shooting last night near the University Avenue intersection. Officers say that when they arrived there at the scene they found a man dead and a woman also injured. The woman was taken to a local hospital, her condition is yet unknown. Berkley police have not made any arrests in the shooting. Police in richmond have arrested a man in connection with four separate robberies. Officers say the crimes all went down in just a three and a half hour time frame, starting after 6 30 last night near the Richmond Bart station. Police say in each case the victim was walking alone when the suspect approached, then assaulted the victim, before taking off with cell phones and money. One woman was taken to the hospital with an eye injury, but she is expected to be okay. It is official, jim harbaugh is now the new football coach at michigan. Days after he left his job as coach of the 49ers, harbaugh was introduced as the head man at michigan. He played at michigan in the 80s and his father coached there in the 70s. Nbc bay areas Stephanie Chuang is live in richmond at a bart stop, where bart replaced the last of the wool seats this morning and i think a lot of folks are giving this a thumbs up. Reporter yeah, absolutely, good morning to you, kris. Its probably too safe for you to hear, but engineers and utility workers are replacing the last of the seats, putting in the new vinyl ones. Just in time for the new year, ending an era that began in the 70s, beginning of bart and beginning of the wool seats, nice deep green ones weve become so familiar with. We spoke with a utility worker who has been working on this since the project began two years ago. Theyve been finding all kinds of things, including needles, coins, things like that under the seats. Since 2012, bart has been replacing every one of the seats in the 669 rail cars. Bart says the vinyl seats have a life span of ten years, compared to three to four for the old ones, which also use 6,000 per car per month to dry clean. Replacing with vinyl is cheaper. Sometimes id rather stand, because they will smell or you can see a giant big stain, so rather just stand. They are nasty, they are really, really nasty. Lots of bums, like, sleep on them, maybe pee on them, they stink really bad. A lot of germs. Reporter happy to see them go . Yeah, really happy to see them go, actually. Reporter now, this is all part of a bigger makeover. Bart is also replacing the carpeting with Something Like linoleum, set to be done by next summer and the move is a band aid for bart, which ordered 775 brand new trains that should arrive in 2015, but take a year of testing before they are ruled out, meaning bart riders are expected to sit in completely new trains in 2017. Youre seeing them do work here. By the mid 2020s, bart is expecting there to be a completely brand new fleet. The number of trains could be more like 1,000 by then to match the growing ridership. And were talking about some pretty cool things, including a new cooling system, as well as padded seats with lumbar support, so plenty of new on the way for bart and bart riders. Northern California High School Girls Basketball team banned from a holiday tournament for wearing tshirts with the slogan i cant breathe will now be allowed to play. Late yesterday tournament organizers in fort bragg reversed their decision. The mendocino High School Girls Basketball Team was initially kicked out when the players wrote i cant breathe on their tshirts during warmups as some nba players have. Those were the final words spoken by eric garner, who died after police put him in a choke hold. The girls say their protest was about a bigger issue. I put on the shirt because i believe even though this community might not have Police Brutality might not be prominent in this community, it is definitely in other communities. Fort bragg high school says it was initially concerned that there could be a safety issue, but after yesterdays uneventful protest, the School Administration changed its position. In the last month alone, the average price of gas has dropped exponentially across the state, but experts say dont get too used to it. Californias new hidden gas tax goes into effect january 1st, part of cap and trade fuel coming under that umbrella, expecting to bring the price up by about ten cents a gallon, maybe more. Well, its been a tough week for a Catholic High School in the east bay. St. Marys is mourning the death of its vice principal, who was involved in a fatal accident while cycling over the weekend. Reporter the Saint Marys College High School Community didnt think theyd see each other until after the winter break, but the loss of their vice principal is bringing them back together a week early. He was here for 11 years, students, alumni, and their parents came to pay their respects. Its really hard, because he was such a bright person, always smiling, very, very, very in tuned with his students. Reporter cyclists were riding on this rural road saturday morning when the chp says the 40 year old probably swerved to avoid a collision, fell on to oncoming traffic and was hit by a water truck. Airasia, reporters confirm an airasia flight overshot the runway because of strong winds, about 45minute flight from manila. These pictures were tweeted out by a reporter in the philippines. Prosecutors in italy want the greek ferry that caught fire and floated into dangerous seas to be towed to an italian port for what is a criminal investigation. They feel more bodies will be found onboard. Two albanian soldiers trying to hook the ferry up to a tug boat were killed doing that work. The ferry has been disabled since it caught fire three days ago off the coast of greece. Crews rescued more than 400 people, but not before ten people were killed. He watched his 5yearold son leave the house to meet friends on the sidewalk, checking on him one last time before closing the door, he saw an animal approaching. I thought it might be a dog, but then i got suspicious because there was no owner with that. Reporter when he realized it was a coyote, he started down the stairs and thats when the wild animal bit the little boy. The coyote come and got me. I had to be there to save, to rescue my son. Reporter he tried to scare the coyote off. I took my sons scooter and just throw it towards him. I run and stand behind papa. Reporter his mom then grabbed him as he kept himself between his family and the coyote, easing back towards the house. He was so aggressive, he was looking into my eyes and i was like completely shaken. Reporter after a twominute stare down with the animal, the family made it safely inside. I was scared. Reporter this is what the wounds like like today. Alameda county Public Health called to say the coyote was tested and did not have rabies. Still we can feel it, its really scary for us right now. Deron greenwood says he doesnt know the name of the person who did something nice for him and his family once, nor will he know the names of the countless people he is helping. Though if they look in just the right place, theyll see his. Somewhere in the neighborhood of 30,000 cars drive past the livermore Waste Water Treatment Plant on isabelle avenue every single day. Most of the people in them probably thinking the city paid a professional artist to create the murals they see standing one corner of the property. Very few would guess it was really the guy in the corner office. Yeah, i do get that a lot when people come out to tour the plant, nice, i painted those. No, you have an artist. No, its me. Deron greenwood is livermores assistant public works director. And while water has been derons profession for many years, art has been his hobby even longer. You know, its a nice outlet to relax, i commute, i have a special job, its nice to come home and just paint a little bit. Thats kind of where it came from. Kaiser permanante Medical Center would become the familys home away from home for the next three years. It was something, however, they were given their very first night that stuck with deron. A care package of snacks for new patients and their families, thanks to an anonymous donor. But it was the coolest thing, that somebody you dont know is thinking about you. Sorry. So i got to think at that point, what could i do . I paint. So i figured thats what i could do. Reporter and that is just what deron did. He took three weeks off from his job at the Water Treatment plant and working day and night, covered an entire wall and the ceiling of the pediatric family waiting area. Because people there with little kids and people sitting getting worse diagnosis than we got, and if there was some way to take somebodys mind off of that and you just get them out of the moment for a minute, thats worth a lot. Reporter deron says the mural is also a way to say thanks to the doctors and nurses who eventually saved his sons life, and what better way to celebrate such good work than with such a great piece of work . Thats where they are going to stay, although its going to feel like the 40s out there with that fierce wind whipping. Heres the deal, ill show you the future cast and this tells a story, warmest colors all across the board here in the bay area, getting 40 to 50 mile per hour wind gusts by 7 00. Then the wind will drop off through midday tomorrow, but after the wind starts to drop, so will our temperatures. There are some things you can do, though, to keep your home safe. This is really the first significant cold snap of the season. We are expecting temperatures in the 20s, so heres what you can do, check for gaps between your window and your door frames, that way youre keeping everything nice and sealed. You can apply caulk, install gask gaskets, and winterize your pipes in the north bay, better to be safe than sorry. All right. Lets get into it. And the time period between thanksgiving and new years in 2012, 1,091 people were killed as a result of drunk driving. Reporter jan withers is National President of mothers against drunk driving, surveying people about why they chose to be a designated driver or ride with one. The overwhelming majority were motivated by the desire for everyone to get home safely rather than avoid a runin with police. The idea of having a designated driver is reaching more and more people, but the fact is, people still drive impaired. Reporter thats illustrated by another survey that found more than half of adults have witnessed a fellow party goer drive while drunk. A third admitted to doing it themselves. Alcohol impairs our judgment and helps us think were okay when were not. Reporter its important to plan how youll get home before arriving at a party.
