Mayor jean quan of oakland telling us this morning her Police Department arrested over 40 people last night, some of whom were responsible for scenes like this. Youve got businesses along broadway where were at right now, who have already started fixing their broken windows. The city spray painting over graffi graffiti. Oakland has become proficient at this sort of cleanup. This is not the first time downtown has been overrun by vandals. An oakland Police Officer documents the handwork of those few people in a crowd of hundreds who chose destruction over peace, rocks and bottles over chains, lawlessness over civility, to accomplish what, asks this young man. Who are you punishing for doing all that, destroying property is not necessarily the way to put it to the man, honestly. Reporter several businesses between 8th and 14th had their windows smashed, including starbucks, chase, and wells fargo. Many walls graffitied with choice words for Law Enforcement. The perpetrators leaving it up to people other than themselves to clean it up. I get it. I get it, i dont get it, its our community. I hate they have to destroy oakland every time it happens, but people are angry. Which they should be. Crazy the state that were in. Reporter o. P. D. Outfitted its officers in riot gear to control the crowds numbering in the hundreds, possibly over 1,000 to keep the peace. The majority of protesters seem to abide. Hearing just over 40 people arrested. Many chanting hands up, dont shoot. Some lit candles and called for justice for Michael Brown, others call a diein in memory of the young man shot and killed in ferguson, missouri. It is back open this morning. Some people took to the streets to react to the ferguson decision. Glyde Memorial Church in San Francisco offered another alternative for folks who wanted to express their frustrations. Opened the doors to let the Community Watch the announcement on a large screen there, then he handed the microphone over to anyone who wanted to speak. The result was a peaceful demonstration that still managed to convey the anger many people were feeling. Its an absolute outrage, and when i hear Something Like that happen up there and this young man doesnt get any justice, it breaks my heart. The system is broken. The system in many, many ways is broken. But the people who are applying the system are on a different level than everybody else. Ahead of the grand jurys announcement, the naacp sat down with mayor ed lees staff to talk about ways to improve relations between police and minority communities in San Francisco. At the top of the list, hiring more africanamerican Police Officers. Now, in ferguson, ground zero, burned buildings, many of them are still smoldering this morning. You see this mornings video on the right after extremely violent protests. Demonstrators torched at least a dozen buildings overnight, many of them total losses this morning. Many of the stores looted before being set on fire. The violence came despite repeated pleas from Michael Browns family and president obama to protest peacefully. Michael brown will not be remembered for the ashes from buildings burned in ferguson. Hell be remembered for new legislation and the upholding of the law. Now that was a new message from Michael Browns family this morning, essentially saying the grand jurys decision has broken our hearts, but not our backs. At a press conference just about an hour ago, the reverend al sharpton stood beside the family and called for change. More protests are planned across the country this afternoon and many worry they will only get more violent. Lets bring in nbc bay areas Jennifer Bjorklund live in ferguson. Jennifer, whats the sentiment out there . Reporter well, its a really difficult day here in ferguson. On the one hand, you know, you have violent protests overnight, the Law Enforcement officials were hoping for peaceful protests and it opened a dialogue, but instead they got looting, they had to throw tear gas, they had gunfire, 150 rounds blowing into the air, and this day is really difficult here in ferguson. From the air, the Morning Light unveiled smoldering streets. Violent protests erupted overnight after a grand jury said it would not indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of unarmed teenager Michael Brown. I know at least a dozen buildings have been set on fire, most of those are total losses. I personally heard about 150 shots fired. Reporter automatic gunfire that kept firefighters at bay, as building after building burned to the ground. To go along, those are dreams. Those are Small Business owners and weve torn those dreams away. Reporter the decision came in an evening news conference. St. Louis county prosecutor stressing the panel of seven men and five women, nine white, three black, are the only ones who have examined all the evidence. They met on 25 separate days in the last three months, heard more than 70 hours of testimony from about 60 witnesses. Reporter witnesses and evidence he says indicate brown scuffled with officer wilson, as wilson tried to get out of his patrol car. His gun unholstered and discharged twice. Among the documents released, these pictures of wilsons injuries after the shooting. But that evidence did not stop the violence here last night. Our communitys got to take responsibility for what happened tonight, for what happened tonight as far as tearing our community apart. And about ten blocks of this Business District here that were overrun last night are still closed at this hour and may remain so throughout the evening. After two nights of protests and violence, president obama asked for a federal investigation. On august 18th, missouri governors sent in the National Guard to begin enforcing a curf curfew. Two days later, the grand jury began meeting to consider whether there was enough evidence to indict officer wilson, and, of course, they decided there was not. The airport says the video shows airport employees first confronting him this weekend, but the amazing thing there is that in the foreground thats a Maintenance Man confronting him, not a security officer, and an airport spokeswoman points out that despite having his hands pointed at the suspect, he is actually completely unarmed. Hes accused of intruding into restricted areas on the private aviation area at sjc this sunday. He entered the lobby outside the secure area where this scene then unfolded. The airport points out that he never entered sensitive areas, nor put passengers in danger. Heres a look at other stories making headlines today. One person is dead, another in custody after a fiery fourcar crash in oakland overnight. Two separate crashes happened just moments apart late last night on westbound 580 near the east fruitvale offramp. Lanes were closed for several hours. They are now open, once again, today. One of the states largest mail recyclers is settling a claim that it spewed toxic chemicals into the area in redwood city. Sims Metal Management has been under scrutiny for two scrap metal fires last year. Sims was allowing metal dust to blow into the bay. And right now, lawmakers are introducing a bill aimed at blocking a proposal to charge people for walking or riding their bikes across the Golden Gate Bridge. State highway officials voted to move forward with that proposal last month. Well have to wait and see what happened. Scott . Money this morning, light day on the markets. We do expect this on thanksgiving week. We just got the latest house price data from case shiler this morning. This is one of the most respected data sets, in fact, dr. Shiler won a nobel prize in economics. It shows San Francisco house prices have begun to fade, thoughnly slightly. Basically, a negative number for the second month in a row, but just barely, less than 1 . So the growth in price appears to be over, or at least on pause. Do note that for San Francisco, they mean by the u. S. Census data, which includes a large part of the east bay and the peninsula. The Commerce Department took a look at americas gdp and said earlier estimates were too low, raising the Third Quarter estimates to 3. 9 , thats very healthy. Add that to the Second Quarter and you have the strongest backtoback quarters in more than ten years. And apple is now worth more than 700 billion. If you take all the shares of apple, multiply them by the share price, thats the market capitalization and thats crossed 700 billion for the first time. What youll notice about this is that were getting the oranges and the yellows here in the south bay, and so we, too, are expecting generous totals. Even taking practice swings with his dad throwing soft toss, but this isnt your typical american story. You see, his mother now faces deportation and separation from her family. For 15 years, rosa and her family lived, worked, and paid taxes in tucson, arizona. That is until a sheriffs deputy pulled rosa over for a Traffic Violation and realized she was here illegally. Rosa and her family agreed to sit down and talk with us. Translator after fighting the court with my attorney, my deportation letter arrived. Reporter after two months, she was ordered deported, potentially separating her from her husband and two sons. Translator it is something i fear. If they say no, you have to go. I wont tolerate being put out of my children. Reporter thats why rosa now lives here in this small room at Southside Presbyterian Church in tucson, where she and the congregation now defy the deportation order, while her family can come and go and live elsewhere, rosa stays here in sanctuary, away from what the leaders of this church say are unjust, unfair, and broken u. S. Immigration policies. You have people who are standing up saying, were not going to fail to act. Reporter Allison Harrington serves as pastor at southside presbyterian, a congregation thats served as sanctuary to hundreds of undocumented immigrants for decades. This isnt just about rosa. This is about the thousands and thousands of families who are living in fear of being separated by our broken immigration system right now. Reporter this Sanctuary Movement spreading nationwide now actually dates back to the 1980s in the civil war in el salvador, before that, to the vietnam war. When this church in tucson joined two other churches in oakland and berkley. The reagan administration, the imf, were saying that the harbor and illegal aliens would be a felony. Reporter she and her and two of the founders of the movement to provide sanctuary in the 1980s. What you were doing was the right thing to do. Im glad to see the congregation said once again claim this. This year alone, a quarter million people, such as this young mother, have fled death and rape squads in central america. Both this mother and her mother were raped in front of her father. The entire family fled honduras for their lives. I want to place my babys life and our lives. Translator we abandoned our belongings, all of it thrown everywhere. Reporter so the family sought sanctuary at a Bay Area Church and remain in hiding living among us in the shadows. Translator as a family, we all agree. Well go to the church to avoid going back to honduras. Translator we, were very scared. There are mothers pushing their kids across a river. If they say that, no, they are just illegal aliens, then were willing to harbor, to find a safe haven, to protect them from deportation s. Reporter its an issue that divides many americans, some opponents say theres no room for a Movement Like sanctuary in the current debate over immigration policy. And they are breaking the law. That is amazing. Well, today the fda is unveiling the final rules for posting calories at food chains with more than 20 locations. California already has a similar law, but the federal law expands to everything from the popcorn that you have at the movie theater, to the potato salad from the grocery store, even beer. This was supposed to go into effect years ago under the Affordable Care act, but was set back by the food industry. It is now set to start next year. The fda is warning against a device that can spread cancer in women. It says hysterectomy patients should not be treated using a device thats used in procedures, but the fda says it can spread cancerous cells that already exist in a womans uterus.
